#28 - Lubricating the steering column on Twingo Mk1

The Twingo Mk1 has had a few problems recently. A tiny coolant leak appeared during a drive to Manchester and back plus the steering was not returning to centre very well.
Today I try to do a temp fix on the steering colums while I wait for the part to come from Germany.

Was lubricating a universal joint, between the firewall & rack, today at work. When turning the wheel lock to lock, there were 3 places felt notchy Locked the wheel straight & unbolted the joint from the rack. Basically just sprayed good quality penetrating fluid on the joint & worked it up & down constantly until it freed. Then smeared grease all over it.

I have a 2006 Twingo and it has the same steering characteristic. If you turn the wheel while stopping, letting go the steering wheel dos not self center it. But when you start driving, it will self center. Also, the steering is much heavier when you drive faster. The power steering of this brilliant car thinks it needs to think for you, so assisting more in certain situations. I don’t really like but it is what it is. Our Twingo’s have one of the first types of electric assisted steering. My old 2005 Honda Jazz also had an early type electrical assisted steering. Those kinds of assisted steering are just strange to use and sometimes seem a bit off. My mechanics friend who works as a Renault mechanic said he saw loads and loads of Twingo’s with this typical steering. He said it was a characteristic of this type of steering.

You should search for versions dedicated for engine D4F 1,2 16V. Initiale is mechanically the same as rest of 16V

Yes apart from the rear suspension setup on the Twingo they are very much based on the R5/clio mechanicals of the same era.
