'Umar ibn Suhak / al-khattab made a very similar statement in his last days. When he came to realize that he had done a great mess, he asked Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib a,s for help. Imam Ali did respond to 'Umar. He invited him to announce publicly that he was wrong and he had done wrong. A declaration that would have saved 'Umar from hellfire. However, 'Omar said :" النار و لا العار " = hellfire is better than ( public ) disgrace.
