We got married in 1965. I lost my beloved husband in August 2020. We will be reunited, that I know. All of these pictures showed happy, smart people and gave a glimpse into their family life.

Housewife and mom here. I think it depends on down payment, income, and how money is managed. Some people I know go into the house search with a list of 700k wants on a 300k budget (California dollars). They get discouraged and sort of give up. The game is to buy a 300k "first house," live in it long enough to build equity, then move on to a "better" home. I hate that game. Managing money comes down to knowing what can be afforded and saying "No" as needed. It is possible, though with new developments and a lack of ability to improve communities (lack of school choice and state-oversight of school districts might keep families from investing in homes in some older communities), it is easy to see how the American dream appears to fading.

Remember when most people could eventually own their own home? That's some nostalgia right there.

My grandparents bought their house in 1962. They paid 6000 dollars, and only had a 7 year contract. That's just crazy compared to today.

@@robertwatkins364 That is really an incredible story. My parents bought their 3 bedroom ranch in 1969 for 10,000 on a land contract in mid Michigan. Paid off in 1982. $99.00 a month.

@@tackyman2011 so the expectations of what a home should be are entirely different? I drive through neighborhoods that started being built in mid 90s and wonder “who needs this much house?” The want vs need in this country is off the charts and these photos really bring that home in only a gen and a half.

The interest rates were very low in the late 60’s. So many people bought their first home and were proud of it.

These homes really looked like a reflection of the people living there rather than a decorator's vision or influencer that 'curated' a look. These homes look lived in and loved.
@BillLaBrie
@BillLaBrie 2 жыл бұрын
I know what you are saying, though most are tract homes pumped out by the millions after the war. People didn’t have an easy way to tell what it “should” look like-the way we do now thanks to social media and canned “lifestyles.”
@l.5832
@l.5832 2 жыл бұрын
@@BillLaBrie Of course, the way it 'should' look is the way they did it in the 1960s....the way that they found comfortable and appealing. Also, housewives WERE heavily influenced by magazines...Good Housekeeping, Better Homes and Gardens etc. but even those magazine spreads were more livable than the soulless all white spartan look endorsed now. (I have several of those magazines from that era)
@BillLaBrie
@BillLaBrie 2 жыл бұрын
@@l.5832 so you’re really just saying they conformed to a template you personally find more appealing?
@l.5832
@l.5832 2 жыл бұрын
@@BillLaBrie Not at all. There was far more variety, even depicted in the magazines. People were not afraid to personalize.....something that was CONDEMNED about 25 years ago in home decorating. When I see interiors now, I know there is going to be a kitchen island with 3 pendant lights above. The living room rug will reach just under the front 2 legs of the sofa. The curtain rod will be right up to the ceiling, showing about 2 feet of blank wall before the top of the window appears. The pillows of the back of the sofa will be 'chopped' (you may not know what that is, but most people who have followed decorating do). They all look the same. Homes 50 years ago were all about personalizing ....taking core trends of colour and style, and adding your own touch.

@@l.5832 I’ve probably torn out a square mile of phony walnut panelling and maybe another square mile of luridly-colored shag carpeting in houses I’ve reno’d over the years across three different states. I’ve also taken a lot of swag lamps and “Mediterranean” laminated furniture to Goodwill or the dump. The 50s and 60s were deep in the era of mass production and conformity. Yes, they had decorator magazines and catalogs that presented styles, but they didn’t have the all-enveloping experience of social media that would allowed them to zero in on a “perfect” look that looks just like every other place. So I don’t see much in the way of boundless creativity and personalization in these photos. I guess I just see attempts to imitate that come up short due to limitations of the times.

It can still be done. Media, etc., would like the population to believe otherwise to jusify bulldozing aging areas in communities to build gated or townhome housing.

Not always easy to guess the year these were taken... Because some parts of the USA back then were more "fashion forward" than others. Generally the Southern states could lag behind the rest of the country considerably, in terms of clothing and hairstyles...
