I've been wanting to do a test like this for a while but I've never been in a position that I had the bikes to fairly compare. Luckily Santacruz has just come out with it's 29" downhill and I can test away! Hope you enjoyed.

Hey Cathro, thanks for another awesome video. Just wanted to bring up a point about the 29" front / 27.5" rear setup idea. I haven't tried it myself and obviously can't comment on Martin Maes' reasoning, but I have read a post by Chris Porter on the subject, which was pretty interesting. If I remember rightly, his idea is to try and gain most of the advantages of each size, whilst minimising the disadvantages. The front wheel gets loaded up with the weight of the rider/bike and pushed into the face of obstacles on the trail, whereas, when the rear wheel hits an obstacle all that weight is already in front and pulling the wheel over. So there's greater potential roll-over benefit from a larger wheel at the front. Conversely, for the same reason that a larger wheel rolls over obstacles more easily, it can't generate as much speed from pumping the back side of the obstacle, and as we can pump most effectively with our legs through the back wheel, it makes sense to use a smaller size in the rear. I think that's pretty much Chris Porter's reasoning for using the hybrid setup, though I may be mis-remembering or glossing over some points. I think it's an interesting idea whether it's faster or not. Anyway, thanks again for the gid vid. Cheers!

This joke is a bit long but worth it... A blonde and a lawyer are seated next to each other on a flight from LA to NY. The lawyer asks if she would like to play a fun game. The blonde, tired, just wants to take a nap, politely declines and rolls over to the window to catch a few winks. The lawyer persists and explains that the game is easy and a lot of fun. He explains, "I ask you a question, and if you don't know the answer, you pay me $5.00, and vise versa." Again, she declines and tries to get some sleep. The lawyer, now agitated, says, "Okay, if you don't know the answer you pay me $5.00, and if I don't know the answer, I will pay you $500.00." This catches the blonde's attention and, figuring there will be no end to this torment unless she plays, agrees to the game. The lawyer asks the first question. "What's the distance from the earth to the moon?" The blonde doesn't say a word, reaches into her purse, pulls out a $5.00 bill and hands it to the lawyer. "Okay" says the lawyer, "your turn." She asks the lawyer, "What goes up a hill with three legs and comes down with four legs?" The lawyer, puzzled, takes out his laptop computer and searches all his references, no answer. He taps into the air phone with his modem and searches the net and the library of congress, no answer. Frustrated, he sends e-mail to all his friends and coworkers, to no avail. After an hour, he wakes the blonde, and hands her $500.00. The blonde says, "Thank you", and turns back to get some more sleep. The lawyer, who is more than a little miffed, wakes the blonde and asks, "Well, what's the answer?" Without a word the blonde shrugs, reaches into her purse, hands the lawyer $5.00, and goes back to sleep.

back in 2013 when i was riding my 26 wheels. I enjoyed everything. I loved the playfulness the quick reaction of bike to turn. What i always wanted from it is just to be a little bit bigger. And then back in 2016 i first tried the 27.5, i found it an ideal size for my riding style. never ever tried a 29'' bike. Even now don't want to.

Problems with 29 that I have: - heavier and as a result slow acceleration. - heavier and wheel has a bigger arc so control is not awesome, feels like a circus bike. Benefits: - if you ride on flat, streets, you ride more with same energy - bumps are not so violent - less pedal strikes because bike is farther from the street level.

Awesome awesome awesome video bro. This has been a big disagreement with people for a while now. But I'm glad you made this video. I never rode a 27.5 but I always thought the tire size between these two didn't matter since the diameters are almost the same. Maybe the next comparison can be about climbing over chunky stuff. See what the times are in climbs.

Guy walks into a bar and orders a beer, opens his bag and gets a little piano out and puts it on top of the bar, followed by a tiny man, who sits down at the piano and immediately starts playing Mozart. "That's amazing" says the bartender, where did you get him. The guy rummages around in his bag and pulls out an old oil lamp, "there's a genie in this lamp, when you rub it he will appear and grant you a wish" he says. Overcome with excitement the bartender grabs the lamp and rubs it, the genie appears in a puff of smoke and announces to the bartender, "I will grant you one wish". "Loads of money" blurts out the bartender, at which point a delivery driver walks into the bar, "I've got a lorry load of honey out the front, where do you want it?". "Honey", asks the bartender, "I asked for MONEY!". Guy at the bar turns to the bartender and says "sorry, you didn't give me chance to mention, I think the genie is a little deaf". "How do you know that?" says the barman. "Do you really think I asked for a 12 inch pianist?" the guy replies.

There was once a boy named Ed. He was totally and utterly in love with tractors. And we're talking posters, framed photographs, models, the lot. For Ed's 17th birthday, he received a tractor racing experience day. He had always dreamed of driving his favourite tractor to its limits on a race track. Finally the day came around and Ed couldn't contain his excitement. The first 30 minutes was the best time of Ed's life. He was setting fast lap after fast lap in his favourite tractor. Then, the tractor suddenly lost grip and rolled 6 or 7 times into the gravel. Ed woke up in hospital with a broken leg and 3 broken ribs. As soon as he got home he tore down all the photos of tractors and burned them on a huge bonfire. All his models were crushed and gotten rid of. He blamed his accident entirely on tractors and even tried to sue the tractor company for the damages to his health. Ed was fuming and never wanted to see a tractor ever again. Ed went on his first ever date to a fancy grill restaurant when he was 19. The girl he was with was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen but the smoke from the grill filled the room and caused her extreme asthma to worsen. Ed knew just how to solve the problem. He took the deepest breath he had ever taken and sucked in all the smoke that filled the restaurant. He then ran outside and blew it all out into the night. When he ran back inside his date said to him, "Oh wow you really did that for me. How did you do it?". Ed replied, "Babe, I'm an ex-tractor fan".

Like you say Ben people overthink this stuff way too much. I've got lots of kit from when I first started riding and I still use it. My mate looked at my 1999 Jr T's and couldn't believe I'd dare use them but I know them and trust them so I'm happy landing big stuff on them all day long. Same with 26", I've got nothing bigger and have no plans to but so what, I go out and have FUN. If I raced then fair enough I'd want to be as competitive as possible but I don't and neither do most of the people stressing over this stuff. Forget wheel size or frame material whatever; rolling your bars back or forth or changing your pedals will probably make more difference to how your bike feels to ride.

What's up Ben? Nice DH track! I'm pretty new to MTB.. Not quite up to par yet ,but watching you is definitely motivation to improve! Who says a 47 year old can't learn to jump/crash a bicycle and ride irresponsibily fast?- Cheers! " A nun found herself walking through a questionable neighborhood one night on her way back to the convent. Nearing a bar, she saw a large, disreputable-looking man step outside. He began walking towards her, clearly swaying as a result of the many drinks he had undoubtedly just consumed. Although the nun very much disapproved of overindulging in drink, she decided that this time, discretion was the better part of valor. She smiled at him and stepped to the side to pass him. Suddenly, the man hauled back and punched her in the face. As she fell back in shock and pain, he threw another punch. And another and another. The last thing she heard before she passed out: "Ya ain't shhho fuckin' tough tonight, arrrrrre ya Batman??"

Highly recommend something like a DMC Moto timer to make videos like this easier for you to do, and improve accuracy. I really appreciate you focusing on personal interpretation of what 'fun' means. Don't let the industry define it in purely metric terms. These are toys for hooning as well as race machines. Do what makes you happy.

Hi Ben luv your videos and passion for riding. I wanted to give you my imput on the differences of what I have encountered. I am originally from Liverpool UK but live in Vail Colorado USA. We have four chairlift bike parks of different terrain it’s an incredible place for mountain biking. I do race at a high amateur level only when my fitness is at its best. Anyway, my point is I owned a Santa Cruz Nomad 650b and the bike slayed all the DH tracks with ease. But then I moved over to a Specialized Enduro 29er Carbon. I noticed immediately on the fast rocky rough terrain that the 29 er rolled faster over the stuff it was incredible. My times on strava where around 2.5 seconds faster consistently on the 29er. My point is if you want to win races the 29 er is where it’s at! If you want to have more fun jumping and quicker loose turns the 650 b is where it’s at. So yes! I agree with you, get on that podium brotha with the 29er it won’t let you down. Keep it roll’n mate!

Problems with 29 that I have on e-bike food delivery: - heavier and as a result slow acceleration. - heavier and wheel has a bigger arc so control is not awesome, feels like a circus bike. Benefits: - if you ride on flat, on streets, you ride more with same energy - bumps are not so violent - less pedal strikes because bike is farther from the street level. - you can use Schwalbe winter marathon plus. They don't nake them for 27.5 and that's why I use 29er wheels especially.

I think 29 is easier to go faster and still feel comfortable! On my firebird 29 I noticed I feel like I am not at full speed even though I am going faster than my 27.5. You nailed it by saying 27.5 is more lively feeling and 29 makes you feel like you can go faster!

Best joke? “Feel free to tap the dislike button twice” 😄😄 Interesting your analysis of the results of mistakes with the 29er. That’s been my conclusions too, fewer mistakes but they cost you more when they happen. Also, suddenly feel the need for a DH bike again. That track is soo much fun on a proper sled! Thanks for that...😂

Before I started watching I was thinking what you concluded with: Too many variables. Now if you recorded your times on both bikes over several days of riding then maybe we can draw some conclusions for what is faster for you. But like you said, it still comes to personal preference because as we know, the fastest bike is the one that feels the best for us personally. My opinion is 29" is okay for taller riders. Me as a shorter rider (under 5'7") 29er is very slow and boatlike turning. For straights, logical thinking is that 29" will be smoother for all since no turning involved. Great video!

A tribe captured three men and took them to a remote tropical island. They were told to collect 10 of a single fruit and to return, or they would be killed. The first man to return had 10 apples and was told to shove all of them up his arse without making any noise or he would be killed. He failed to get the second in before shouting in pain. The second man came back with grapes, and got nine in before seeing the third man and laughing, so he was killed. When the first and second man met in the afterlife, the first asked the second why he burst out laughing. The second man replied ‘I saw him come back with fucking pineapples’.

"If you don't like the video feel free to hit the dislike button TWICE" good trick to undo the dislike. It's a solid video so no dislike for me and I almost didn't see the "FREE" hoodie(almost two years now so congrats to the winner) because I'm to focused on the ride. ROCK HARDER!

Since I don't race and my trails are very tight I'm on a 27.5. For sure when going fast and turning I have holy Sheeet moments. I think my style of riding is to feel like I have to pick my lines really carefully, instead of plowing over stuff and feeling slower.
