in response to what you said about the 54th ratchet slipping, it looked like you had quite a bit of grease on the ratchet systems when putting it back together. i would remove some of the grease as that can cause slippage, and the star ratchet systems don't require huge amounts of grease

I would say you don't notice such a big difference in the engagement is because it's only about 2 degrees difference and already a pretty fast engagement. However if you're like me or my friend and you go from 20-30 degrees engagement down to a super fast engagement in my case 4,25 degrees then it makes a massive difference and after 2 or 3 rides it changes how you ride and everything get's easier as well as more fun.

Fantastic news, your World Cup coverage is unrivalled, so I’m very much looking forward to a full season. I’m also running 240s on carbon rims (ENVE) and only have the 18T, but apart from the lack of noise it doesn’t really bother me. Carbon wheels are definitely a game changer for heavier riders, especially on a 29er as I love the precise feel they have and they definitely feel livelier under power.

Ben, too much grease on the DT Swiss star ratchets can create the slipping you mentioned. Too much grease can cause hydraulic lock and prevent parts from moving, too little grease can cause too much friction and the parts won't move. The ratchets must FREELY cycle in and out axially to engage teeth. Minimizing the engagement angle with high tooth count is a definite plus when doing slow speed technical climbing that requires starting and stopping pedaling to prevent pedal strikes. When the angle is very small it means that you can resume applying torque to keep the bike moving and prevent falling over.

Hi Ben, regarding the 54 tooth ratchet slipping occasionally, it looked like you had a tad too much of the red dt swiss grease stuff in there, I've found the more grease stops the two halves engaging properly, I personally use just a fraction of the amount you applied without any issues, maybe give it a go and see if it sorts out the issue !

Ben, great news on the sponsorships, really fantastic, especially the Santa Cruz deal, will be nice to know you'll be at all the World Cups - really thought Red Bull was going to pick you up to add content for them. On the DT Swiss ratchet's, your hub originally had only the 18pt ones installed, so if you continue to have any slipping with the 54pt, you can go to the 36pt first to see if that stops it, while still not loosing a tonne of engagement points. As to engagement points, don't think you'll really appreciate it doing that sort of high speed DH riding, but take it to a slower, more techy trail where you need to ratchet to get over or through stuff and you'll start to appreciate higher engagement.

Instant engagement is awesome for racheting through technical slow sections of trail, especially if you run an oval ring, just helps to compensate for the dead-spots in the pedal stroke. Not something you would necessarily notice riding downhill/enduro or if you haven'd used a high engagement hub before, hard to go back once you have though. Great Video
