Abby Sunderland attempted to become the youngest person to sail around the world back in 2010. She almost made it. She started out sailing from Marina del Rey in California, sailed around South America, did repairs to her boat in Cape Town, South Africa, but had to be rescued in the Indian Ocean west of Australia. Her brother Zac sailed around the globe back in 2009 ending his voyage in Marina del Rey's harbor to a great turn out of people. I was there too. The Sunderlands were a family deep into sailing and boats.

I respect her desire for travel and adventure, but in my opinion it's a bad idea for her to be doing that alone, and I didn't say that just because of her gender. A guy shouldn't do that all by himself either. A mechanic who could repair boat engines would've been good to bring along incase the boat suffered a serious malfunction. Someone with enough medical knowledge such as a doctor or nurse joining her would've been a good idea seeing she almost got dehydrated, and one of her closest friends could've joined her for emotional support. If I knew her personally I would've reccomended she bring those 3 others prior to sailing off on that voyage.

@@bracebrooks967 I could make an argument for rejection, shame and guilt depending on the severity of it but I always liked that line in the song "the owner of a lonely heart is better than the owner of a broken heart." Having said that Brace, there is a difference between being alone and being lonely. I hated being alone as a young person and would become very lonely but now I enjoy being alone and am not lonely at all. I am too busy and can't wait to get beck to sailing, reading, and oh yes, youtubing! lol

To be honest - not that impressive, yet typical of the American News Media to hype up every story. In the last 20 years there have been many yachtswomen from several countries who have solo sailed non-stop around the world (most of them unsupported by international race organisers), including a 14 year old and a 16 year old. The very first solo circumnavigation (by any sailor) was by Sir Francis Chichester at the age of 65 - he was greeted on the dockside at Greenwich UK by HRH Queen Elizabeth II and knighted there for his endeavour.

To be honest, it's impressive *every single time* anyone completes a voyage like this solo, regardless of how many times it's been done before. I'm really, really curious what great feats you've accomplished to have the audacity to claim this is "not that impressive" I'm betting not a whole damn lot since people who actually do impressive things with their lives don't waste their time leaving disparaging remarks online in regards to other peoples accomplishments.
