Q• Why do you speed up some of the footage in your videos?
A• We don't, we film it as time-lapse footage. We do not have the battery capacity or data storage to film in real time as our cruises can last up to 7 or 8 hours. We use to the time-lapse footage to help tell the story of movement rather than showcase the scenery. We limit the amount of time-lapse shots we use in each vlog.

With the COVID lockdown all the usual hire boat traffic has been missing entirely and non-liveaboard boaters have only just been allowed to start moving again, so it’s definitely artificially low traffic. M

Thanks! After sorting through dismal and insanity from the American "news" outlets I needed a bit of sanity, levity, and relaxation. A top notch video as always! We finally got a break from the heat here. In fact we got just a bit over 3.5 inches of rain in a 24 hour period mid-week. So dry here that most of that rain was soaked up by the crops. Getting the rain just when we need it most!. I think the corn has grown almost 2 feet in the past week or so. Sadie would've given a second thumbs up but she zonked out in her favorite chair watching the video! 😂 Hope all is well with you three!

We hope to, eventually, do the end of it, but for practical reasons we may not take Persey there... it’s quite a long way from us, but also has serious water issues and that means a fairly limited window to get on and off... which is a lot for the last few miles. So we may rent a boat on there someday instead. M

Meeting a CRT worker who is also a viewer, I have been wanting to ask you.. Does the CRT, or for that matter the authors of the Nicholson Guides, ever consult with you or seek you out for experienced opinions? For instance when you spot a change in the navigation from what the guide says [ie: going past the turning point to the end near the tunnel on the Chesterfield] or points of interest, or disused water points and moorings?

We probably could report changes to the Nicholson’s team, but since our books are so out of date they’d probably already know about most of the changes we’d note. We’ve not been consulted, no... I’m sure they’re worried I’d talk their ears off! M

Definitely never good to have gas lines be anything but perfect :) Also, I'm glad that George is less anxious or put out when onboard VS walking. I know early on that definitely seemed to add some stress when you had to decide how much to walk VS having him onboard. Very glad you got to run through with another boat for half the work! Sykehouse lock had us puzzled too. When we went through a few years ago the buttons were not well labelled and the instructions were not clear or easy to read. The swing bridge at Thorne lock gave us grief, wouldn't open till someone came and kicked the control panel in the rignt place.

Jo's explanation totally has a point, the 'Key' is the main issue after going through the bridge, the bridge opening only relies on her key, so perfectly logical to have that issue logged into her brain after doing this kind of thing for a while ..... Think about it. The argument is solid.

The way George looks around from the boat reminds me of the behaviour of our collie when she is on board a boat. We’ve just returned from a week’s sailing on the Norfolk Broads. She loves to keep a sharp look out for passing boats, swans etc. and only starts whining when there isn’t anything exciting to look at.

The waterproof housings on the cameras have no port for a permanent connector, and while I could cut one I’d end up compromising the waterproofing... the batteries are a bit of a pain, but it’s more workable than a splash of rain or accidental dunking destroying the cameras outright. M

Technically the fishing rights in England are all privately owned, but if you had a license then possibly, though I don’t think you’d want to troll in such shallow waters. It’d be dictated entirely by the byelaws of whatever club or association owned the rights though. M

There is something to say for posting real time videos as well, though it is possible there could be too much of that on You Tube already. One of my cats recently watched 20 minutes solid of that--and relaxing tough it is, I don't think you're aiming at a channel for cats to watch.

Yeah, some of our cruises are 7 hours or longer. Not sure anyone should spend time watching that. We actually record in time-lapse as we don't have the battery or storage capacity to film in real time. We realised that we had all this footage and we had only shared snippets of it so thought it would be worth sharing it all over time.

I see 'Perseverence' is being launched in a few weeks to Mars - not the canalboat, but NASA's latest Mars rover. ( mars.nasa.gov/mars2020/ ) Interestingly, this will also have a watery connection (albeit dried up), as it will be landing in the Jezero crater and delta area (Google for amazing images of the martian watercourses) exploring and collecting samples.

Just watched your explanation of how You Tube advertising and ad blocking works. Glad you are not one of the new wave of freeloaders on You Tube who have figured out how to get us to support their perpetual vacations...especially the very young ones who probably never had a job. What I don’t understand is, since you only get about 10 percent of what you spent on equipment etc. for this hobby, you would be concerned about ad blockers since what you lose is insignificant. You say you are only doing this because you are financially independent and just want to. So, bravo. We all watch you because we wish we could do the same, but probably never will. Makes no sense to me why you would even bother mentioning it. People block ads because they are annoying and break up the pace of what they are viewing. Who do you know that wants ads? So please explain to me why it is even important to you since it has no material effect on the two of you. A show about how the two of you ever got together would be much more interesting and I would gladly pay for the advertising on that one.

Oddly, Fair Use allows folks to use your video to insult it / you but cant use it to talk about unrelated things. KZbin really should make available a Letter Of Limited License for folks to use, so Content Owners can more easily grant individual license contract using an established, and publicly examined for fairness, legal letter. To keep copyrights you must defend from ALL theft, a Letter Of Limited License would solve the problem when you dont mind folks using a particular vid or part of it for one specific use
