@@panorama_masteringthis was a very good non biased approach. There are not many for VSX. Personally I can’t stand the marketing they have used.. but I understand why. And the VSX are useful for people who have poor listening spaces or want to travel and work on closed backs. I have them also and have found very little use for them over my planar magnetics with proper amplification. I have also found that realphones provides a much more useable and accurate image when paired with the dac, amp, headphone combo I am using. What bothers me most about the VSX system is that it was released as the holy grail of headphones and the software was so far off at the time it needed many revisions to be useful. I’m with you that VSX can not replace my planar setup or monitors for that matter. To me a bigger issue is the trend with manufacturers and developers of hardware and software to release unfinished products and make users wait for extended periods of time for updates to make the product a finished product.. Reviewers should not be used to compensate for a lack of r&d at the end users expense and time. This to me is a bad trend in the audio industry. Thanks for your honest review. It’s appreciated! 😀👍🏻

Good review and fair review. I switch back and forth between speakers and the VSX all the time. I simply disable the headphone software in my effects rack. There are more elegant ways to do it too. Such as routing the VSX specifically to your headphone out. I think the BIG thing about VSX is it solves room acoustic problems inexpensively. Which is a huge deal.

Thanks for watching! For me I'm use to using my monitor controller to quickly flick between playback outputs, so I can be scrolled all the way on my drum mix; flick onto my headphones; flick back to monitors; so the routing was set up so I didn't have to scroll across to my main out and turn plugins on/off.

I think that the headphone models are all pretty difficult to get behind. I really appreciate the different rooms because understanding how NS-10s sound and why they translate so well has personally helped me a ton. On the downside, the only headphone model I use is HD Linear 1 because I can level match via the bypass. If I could use any of the headphones in the bypass mode that might defeat the purpose of a "true" bypass, but it would make the other models much more useful since they change in volume so much it's pretty tedious. That's one thing I'm not huge on as a whole for the plugin is the level difference between rooms. I get it, but at the same time I could appreciate a level match.

I love them for mix checking. I have a treated room with good speakers and would rather work on the speakers, but I find bouncing around the rooms to really be a time saver - exposing things I might have missed in an already pretty good mix. I know what the rooms sound like now, and always pair VSX up with Reference by Mastering the mix so I can level match A/B with a reference quickly in each room and not “chase my tail”. Great tool for mix checking imo. Totally worth it for me.

I literally bought these almost 2 weeks ago. I read all 39 pages of the Gearspace thread before buying, so i knew what to expect. I'd say they matched my expectations for the most part. The rooms sound pretty convincing, however it IS a bit of a collaboration between the software and your imagination. You've gotta allow yourself to imagine that you're actually in the room. If you just expect the software to make you believe it itself then it wont convince you. The other thing is you've gotta spend time with the rooms learning them, like any other monitoring situation. They're a useful tool, it's like a car test on speed in your pocket, but i haven't had them long enough to say for sure that the translation of my mixing or mastering has improved yet I was also considering the Hifiman Ananda Nano headphones instead (they're planar), i'm still not sure if i made the right choice buying the VSX, but i guess i'll always wonder what if no matter what haha

My pleasure; I think there's a tendency (Even from myself in the past, and I'm sure I will in the future) to hold things up on a pedestal as the "holy grail". Doing so does little to help others, and actually cripples their decision making because if it's something that doesn't work for them; they're stuck thinking it might be something wrong with their process; not the product;

I bought these not so long ago, after having various different cans over the years and so far my mixes have improved quite a lot. I Really like the emulations just to test out and check balance. Like with anything, referencing a lot and just listening to a lot of music in these is key. This is a good video, unbiased and something that is very needed in the sea of reviews out there, one final note is there is a systemwide plug now so you don’t need to go through your daw when listening to other content on your machine.

Great review from all perspectives! I purchased the Audeze MM-500 and the Slate VSX Platinum while moving to a new space. That space would not be mix ready for some time. I ended up keeping both as I have often used high end headphones to check my work. I also am a very long-time cross-feed user via the SPL Phonitor hardware so I am not used to adding room reverb. They simply are good at different things for different reasons. I am throwing in my 2 cents to back your assessment

One important thing to note here: If you're not using the software, the headphones aren't useless. They become regular headphones. Big difference. You can definteley use them on systems that have no DAWS or anything installed, just plug them in. I'm only using them like this as a backup until I get new gaming headphones, but they do work.

Overall, a well-stated review with valid points, both good and bad. However, I do think you missed at least one big reason to purchase VSX (I've owned them for a couple of months). Many people nowadays are mixing in smallish, bedroom studios with extremely sub-par monitoring (even if they've tried to effectively treat the room). For these people, VSX is truly an amazing tool. I've had a small recording/mixing setup for over 30 years and I'd say VSX is probably the best single investment I've made to date. That's saying a lot. A couple of other things to mention... Personally, I find the VSX headphones to be very comfortable and I can wear them longer than my other headphones. But, of course, that's just me. If you buy the Platinum version, whenever they add more rooms in the future, you get them all for free. For me, after a while, VSX sort of becomes one monitoring system that you learn. You learn, that one set of monitors in one room brings out the sibilance in vocals, another shows if you have too much sub-bass, and another really lets you hear the lower mids, etc. I mainly mix in one room, but being able to spot-check from so many monitoring systems is a great tool. If you mix using a laptop, being able to mix anywhere is pretty cool. The confidence VSX can give, especially to newer mixers, in being able to get a close approximation of how their mix will sound in some of the world's best studios, can be quite a powerful thing.

Hello, I just want to use one earphone and don't want to be tired of switching devices all the time depending on the type of music. I listen to 80% classical and 20% jazz and pop. I I think I like mm500 very much, and I think the instrument part is quite good, and the vocals are in the front, so the female voice sounds good. Do you recommend other headphones at this level? I think the Sound Stage of the mm500 is ok. For classical music, the instrument is not too modified and artificial, the low-frequency dive is enough for jazz. I'm still looking for a sound I like, maybe you can give me some advice or other information.

The VSX have helped a lot in me hearing better and getting better mixes; especially in the low end and reverbs. I was skeptical at first but they beat my mackie 824’s and sub in an untreated room. Ive found a favorite mid field and far field and rarely bounce around to others….and with routing; I too have issues even with their system wide software. Not that it doesnt work, it just leaves me turning it off when i route out to my tape machine and 500 series gear. I havent found an easy solution yet but not a deal breaker.

Thanks for the great video, but I have a question about Audeze. Is there a difference in quality between the most expensive headphones at Audeze and the ones you own, or just additions in accessories?
@panorama_mastering
@panorama_mastering 11 ай бұрын
No worries; my pleasure; the way I see it with audeze's lines of headphones you're paying for the physical engineering of the products and material; Example LCD-X vs LCD 5; almost three times the price difference; Diaphragm LCD-X use a Ultra-Thin Uniforce™ which is 1.8µm thick (microns) LCD-5 use a Nano-Scale Diaphragm which is 0.5µm thick (microns) LCD-X use a proprietary magnet array LCD-5 use a Fluxor Magnetic Array; It's not to say the technology in the the less-expensive audeze's are flawed or an inferior product; they're just a different efficiency of engineering; I look at it like the evolution and progressions of F1 vehicles; they're aiming to squeeze out optimum performance from this technology; and if you read the patents Audeze have filed it's astounding at the R&D and methods they have of doing it; That all said this is all a technological and engineering stand point; IN PRACTICE as audio engineers is there a relevant difference between the price of these headphones that would justify the 5k to 6k spend; I know some engineers who LOVE the LCD-5's and others WHO DON'T and prefer something like the X's. Ultimately it comes down to my last statement in the video; it's about figuring out what works best for you; and if that jump on the price scale gives you comfort and helps you perform at your job more effectively; then it may be worth it for you;

Something I don't think you mentioned is that Audeze makes a software package called Reveal which not only adjusts the responce of all models of Audeze's own headphones to the designer's target curve, but also inclueds room simulatons of a variety of famous mix studios, in other words, functioning quite a bit like the reviewed software above. I have to agree that the sound qulity of these Audeze headphones, and especially thier flagship LCD-5, takes the resolution, detail retrieval, and soundfield to an entirely different level. If your aim is just for mixing etc, VSX will save you money and get the job done for sure. Its definitely not a gimmick but some endorsers saying they sound the same as an LCD 4 or LCD 2 when those presets are selected in the software are just overhyping them. They dont have the same detial but are great for mixing and quick referencing between the different emulated environments.

I wish you would have said more or well anything about the linear mode, where the headphones give a really great balanced flat "room" response.. You hear every mistake if you ask me.. The emulations (in earlier version you got all except mike deans for "free") are just here, to me atleast for checking the translation and its crazy, the SUV tells me immediatly when I have too much of the very lows and the mastering room in red tells me immediatly when the mids 2k and around of the vocal are too quiet... or the snaredrum is really too loud and will hurt the ears when played back loud... I really got to a high I would even say professional mixing level with the linear mode and at the end checking on the emulations.. As far as I've seen most of us stick to one or two rooms we like the best, and maybe use some others at the end just to check the mix. I would add that the headphones are not completely useless without software, the do sound fine on their own, but yeah... the software is the sauce and the reason one would buy these. The translation of my very first mix using these was quite impressive, low end especially, and I didn't even give it enough time to get used to the sound. I had these for a week. Sadly the driver is nowhere near good enough. The transient response and level of detail on headphones such as the Focal Clear MG or the MM500 is impossible to replicate on a headphone of this quality. Sure the software can get close to different frequency curves, but technical performance is a different story. A much better option, slightly more expensive, is the Neumann NHD30.

Hey, don't want to come across as rude or ask for too much, but IMO the AI you're using to clean up the voiceover doesn't sound too good. It eats away at the high frequencies and overall seems to reduce the expressiveness and sometimes intelligibility of your voice. Not sure what could be used with the same quick results, but, if you're interested, I heard of a way where people use Adobe AI, but mix in the high frequencies of the original signal, which keeps them feeling natural. Will love your videos regardless of the voiceover fidelity, just wanted to say something that's been on my mind for a long time already...

I mixed on vsx for 2 years and everything was fine everything translated really good an balanced but then i got MM500 and i discovered that that mixes sounded really 2 dimentional. yes ballansed but lacking "depth".

@entity9588 I thought so either ! I was like, come oon man! after 15 years of mixing, i still suck ? And then i started listening to other ppl s mixes, and most ot tem sound no different than mine. But great mixes like Daft punk RAM or Parcels and recordings like that sound very different on mm500, and i think it's because of how amazingly these headphones can reproduce reverb. The best test for me was mixing on mm500, then checking on vsx. i was just blown away by the decisions i made.

@@entity9588 It's not. The software emulations can't fix the physics of poor headphones. I bought the LCD-X headphones and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

I'm curious how much of the processing for the room sounds play into our decision making for reverbs / delays when mixing on slate VSX...

So do you guys prefer or find it faster and easier to get translatable mixes using vsx or Mm-500’s? I know there’s always a tendency because you paid $$$ it must be better?

These were the most overrated headphones I used. I wanted to love them and have them replace my M50x. Just for the headphone part, not for the room emulation. I never met another real professional who uses room emulation in their headphones. If you need room emulations to make a good mix, you need to work more on your mix. Making a good mix is 100% about you being comfortable with your sound system. No room is perfect, no headphone is perfect. For some, the VSX might be perfect. For me, it was an overhyped promise that didn’t deliver. If you want a great pair of headphones at that price, check Hifiman Sundara or the Sennheiser HD650. But if you can’t make a great mix on ATH M50x, work more on your mixing first. 🤓

Looks like Slate is throwing big money out there because I have MM500 as well as LCD-X , and I've tested just for curiosity the VSX system. Of course VSX can't compare in terms of detail, depth, sounstage and 3D pin-point image ... Audeze are razor sharp detailed headphones and VSX sounds really cheap compared to them.

In minute 3:15 is the answer. Is so easy to emulate the stationary frequency response of a speaker. However the transient response is impossible due to mechanical aspects. The same happened to me when I transitioned my main studio monitors to the new genelecs 8350b.

@@panorama_mastering Agreed. Audeze's high end headphones are a high water mark achievement within the realm of 'headphones', but VSX takes it to another level of realism that is far beyond a gimmick, ie: it's the real deal sonically speaking. You can make fine mixing decisions exactly like using those high end speakers and you can't have that experience with Audeze on its own.
