Once I was outside with my cat. I have raised my cat on a leash when we go out side his very use to it and I noticed later there was a tiny bird near to our house but the bird blended in with the background and my cat never noticed the little bird. The bird didn't move, was completely still and I was so worried if it was a chick that fell out off the nest but did little research and understood that this is how they live.

This is brilliant we have a nest box with camera but it’s not quite as clear as this . We have babies every year to it , we had 9 eggs this year and just 3 survived . You almost feel a little sad then they fledge the nest having watched them for so long . Brilliant footage thanks for sharing

On the bright side, if they survive till next year, they’ll very likely have offspring of their own! Those parents will unwittingly become grandparents (wherever their children decides to settle down)!

For those that didn't read the description. The parent's are with the chicks outside, they are still feeding them, they will still feed them for a couple weeks while they all stay in a tree nearby the nestbox. The chicks will probably never go far from the area they were born in. Edit: Thank you for also including an outside view and also including which camera equipment ect was used, it will help those who maybe feel inspired to do this themselves one day.

Was curious about that. I know the barn swallows that nest on our back porch every year will fly around the back yard as a group for a few weeks before going on their way. They also usually roost somewhere on the porch during this time. Had a Bluejay nest one year but a woodpecker got to them.

I only just found your channel today when The KZbins recommended your empty box to first egg video, and I've been binging. It's been absolutely fascinating! I learned so much. I had no idea parents still fed fledglings after they'd left the nest! I had no idea parents removed the poop, or that the baby birds would stick their butts up and be like, "here it is, take it". =D I had no idea parents removed tiny dead birds from the next. Or that the Mum would eat the shell. Thank you very much for all your efforts, and for sticking with it throughout the ups, downs, heartaches, and mean commenters.

Never occurred to me that the younguns might try to fly inside the box. I remember watching 4 finches fledge at my moms once. Very entertaining. You could tell they had all been born a day apart and had correspondingly less development. The first one came out and flew 40 feet to the top of a 6' fence. The second one made the distance but couldnt get high enough and fluttered down the fencepost. The third once landed right at the base of the fence and the 4th once crashed about 2/3 of the way there, but was talked into walking there by the mom.

As I observed this day, chicks don't leave the nest on their own. If the adults think they are ready they stay outside and call them. When the chicks fly for the first time they don't know where the flights end and so there is heavy communication between them and the adults. Our nest box is under the roof of the hut in the garden. When I went in to get some tools the adults where upset and called the chick to leave. It was somewhat confused and didn't want to but eventually followed order :-) In another case I had the window in my office tilted. It was the 4th floor and there was a huge tree nearby. The chick made its first flight and bumped against the glass and was therfore thrown into the room where it ended on the floor totally exhausted. I picked it up, opened the window and placed it on the window bench. There you could clearly notice the communication between the adults and the chick, calling each other. The chick flew back when ready.
