Trade Matthews. Make it realistic. Realistically when players don't want to sign then that reflects how they play. He wins a cup, doesn't want to sign(right after the cup), and not to mention he dropped. If that's not a slap in the face then I don't know what to tell you. Bring in MacKinnon. He's a better player and has the franchise tag. Get Matthews the hell out of Toronto if he doesn't want to be here. Plain and simple.

I don’t get how the Jack Adams award is calculated in this game, I had a coach that did not have a single season under 55 wins in all but one season, he won 10 Stanley cups and 12 presidents trophies in about 15 years. The longest we went without winning a cup was the first 2 and then beyond that we only didn’t win every few years. The coach literally made the team, I had 3 different offensive defensemen over the course of the franchise mode, Quinn Hughs and fake players every single one of them had a ppg career with the leafs, Hughes had 132 points in his finale season with us. He signed to another team for 16 mill and then put up 60 points same with another one of the fake players 128 points in his finale season with us he leaves signs for 17 mill and then doesn’t hit 65 points again in his career. This coach was OP but not a single coach of the year award.

In my GM mode with the devils Jack Hughes was the same player as matthews wanted 16 mill for 8 years and didn’t want an extension waited til the off season and got him for 10 mill. You’ll be able to sign matthews!

Relax it’s gonna change throughout the year, just keep checking back month by month but I guarantee that he’s going to want an extension by the time the season starts and if not partway through the season he’s gonna want one.

The move is to trade Matthews for a young cost controlled RW sniper that works on the 1st line with Calico and sign MacKinnon. Nylander then becomes the 3rd line center to stack the center core because both him and Mac are playmakers and wouldn't work chemistry wise. Lines would end up: Foegle-MacKinnon-? Grigorenko-Tavares-Marner Baconator-Nylander-Puljujarvi Kessel-Robertson-Korshkov

You can sometimes talk them down from those super high contracts they initially ask for if you just offer him less, he’ll reject the contract but his asking price might go down

You can still sometimes sign them for the 85% glitch even if they don't want an extension. I've done it a lot in my Franchise just try offering it. 85% for 8 years would be around 11.5 mil

Johnny Matthews is your guy. You should keep simming and every few weeks or every month check if he wants to sign. He’s the franchise you can’t lose him even if that means overpaying him. Another way to make it somewhat realistic if you get him to sign for cheaper (15% trick) is if you give Matthews the C instead of Tavares. It’s Matthews team now and I feel like as Tavares declines he would understand that and give the room to Matthews as he takes a step back and Matthews enters his prime. Remember it was Tavares making the unselfish play passing to Matthews for the Stanley cup winning goal maybe he’s willing to pass the C to him too.

I’ve found that players are much more open to accepting contracts they don’t want. There has been a few (granted 3rd liners) that accepted the contract they asked for even though they didn’t want the extension.

But it seems nothing comes without a price, and some of the higher-ups developed a "lil ol' drinking problem". Some sources said, that during this year Entry Draft GM Superbman, running Toronto Maple Leafs, got so exited after showing remarkable results with low first round - second round picks, that he started "hitting that boutle", or as some eyewitnesses claim , hipflask. He later became agitaded, congratulating scouting staff louder than needed, and by the time of Torontos fourt-rond pick became red in face, with his tie crumpled to the side, screamed "MAPLE TOP! Well you gotta think chemistry. If you go out and get Mac, that makes Nylander expendable. So I say look if Mackinnon even fits on your first line, if he does trade him and sign Mackinnon. That way you can think about either having a fall back plan with Mackinnon if Auston doesn't want to sign, or trading Tavares and keeping both. Tavares is getting older, yea hes gunna be good for a while, but Matthews is 25 years old. Its his team now, then you could have Mackinnon on the 1st and you go out and sign a sniper for him with mathews on the 2nd with marner. That's the way I would roll that out. And as for your defense issue, go out and player search a defensive defenseman thats cheap and trade for one. You won't find any in Free agency.

Matthews will ask for a lot less once it is actually time to sign. They ask for more in the offseason. Even if you lose Matthews you will free up 12 mil in cap for free agency

You can get Mackinnon, whose better, for the same deal you wanted Mathews for (it’s more than he wants) and you’ll also get a huge return in Mathews. Just make sure you send him home to AZ because it’s obvious that’s where he wants to play

Make sure your trade block matches what you want when finding a trade. If you want nothing but 27-50 year old players and late round picks no one will want AM34. Set it to high draft picks and prospects if that what you want. Then find a trade.

I think its not unrealistic to move Matthew's but I would say you should only move him of you sign MACK FRIST, cause if you trade him and don't get mackinan then you goofed up, if Mack signs then you move the Matthews. But in my way you have to move another player like someone north of 3 or 5 mill to get mack on the team but I would say its worth a try I would maybe see what you could get for Lilly since he's not the most expensive and expendable person in my opinion to free up cap, then when you move Matthew's 11 mill get Lillys replacement and # 6 Dman which id say is more than easy with Matthews value

You can always trade him at the deadline and still get something for him too
