I've always learned that: Standing on the side of the car and you can see the front/rear indicator, you don't need any extra! You brought doubt, so I looked at my 2CV6, Dyane, Ami and Mehari, but they all showed the front and rear indicators! However, There is ONE exception to the rule! If you have a towbar on your car, then YOU MUST HAVE AN EXTRA indicator on either side of the car! 😊

This is what we call a good result Ian. Elle is now indicator legal again. I've been in a similar situation on various jobs (not just cars) where I've re-used some old parts as the alleged kits just didn't fit and that's fine but means wasted time. Anyway well done and thanks for sharing.

Sadly one thing I really hate on classic cars are clear indicators, I don't like them on modern cars either but you don't have a choice with them lol. Nice to see tinkering again, A 5 minute job...aye right lol, I'll believe it when I see it. Never had a 5 minute job last only 5 minutes yet. Hoping to see some Bob adventures, great vid to keep us sane in a current mad, mad world.

Great little tinkering video, the clear repeaters really suit Elly.
@adamlee37722 ай бұрын
Tinkering videos are always good. Thanks for sharing. Please make sure that the S/S components are well insulated from the carbon steel panels/ The stainless is more noble than the carbon steel of the car body, this could result localised preferential corrosion on the bodywork as the less noble carbon steel will act as a sacrificial anode should you get moisture in there, salty water becoming an electrolyte.

You have come up with a good solution for the side indicators. And yes, 5 minutes of work takes at least an hour, especially with a vintage car.
@MapleMarmite2 ай бұрын
Looks like the whole under arch area will be illuminated by the side flashers at night, so you should be quite visible with your indications. Your exploits with the nut splitter has put one of those on my most wanted list - will save a lot of heating and beating in many circumstances. 👍🏻

Thank you for that. I was wondering how you’d solve that repeater. Your trials have become quite a masterclass. Now you’ve taught me I’ll pop over and order a set for the Romahome. I’ll probably lose them before I get round to fitting them though 😅
@Parknest2 ай бұрын
Ian, with clear indicator lenses you will have a "fried egg" look with amber bulbs. If you don't want that you can get chrome bulbs that are amber when illuminated. Good call on the stainless fixings. Some white grease will make it easier for the next guy (most likely you) who works on it. Even stainless steel can still corrode.

A big thumbs up for clearing the top of Bob (well almost), it makes you look far more organised. As for the side repeaters if you took some penny washers and snipped off part of one side (tin snips job) or even ground of the side then they would fit under the new lights and enable them to be bolted down securely. Re having a Dremel. I would highly recommend a Proxxon tool of this type. I have both brands and find Proxxon better made.

I'd love to see a status update on the Alphalan-over-primer job inside that wheelarch, next spring for example so it's been through a winter. I'm thinking of using these kinds of products on my Peugeot Expert and it would be nice to see some real-world results. There seem to be a lot of positive testimonials out there but they're usually advertising the product, so I'm never entirely sure how honest they're being.

Ian, please be aware that stainless steel will rust given enough salt, depending on the grade. I used to work in subsea engineering and we used minimum 25% chromium stainless. I'm guessing those bits aren't 25% Cr so make sure you rust-proof them as if they were mild steel - they'll last longer. Mike
@GaryRobertonBoyes2 ай бұрын
From the state of the metal around the repeaters location, a dollop of rustproofing primer might be in order...Cheers

I suppose you could have used a drill to make the second hole for the new light unit. I think I would have attempted that to make use of the new lenses.
@HubNut2 ай бұрын
I don't really like drilling more holes in a car. I think I must have reshaped the wing holes to take the existing repeaters. Everything is now working. That's the main thing.
@johnmoruzzi72362 ай бұрын
I would have drilled 2 new holes for the new repeaters at 90 degrees to the others, and abandoned the front clear lenses for matching new orange ones. Much smarter IMO...
@lv_woodturner38992 ай бұрын
Stainless mounted to mild steel will cause corrosion of the mild steel in any areas without any paint due to the dissimilar metals. Sad but it happens.
@HubNut2 ай бұрын
Yup. I may add rubber buffers to the ends of the spider.

It is galling that every time you try to do the right thing something bites you in the bum. Also when spinning on a stainless nut using a power tool onto a stainless bolt you can find out the other meaning of the word galling. See bitten again.

Was the most corroded one the near side or offside? I would hazard a guess(pun not intended) that it was the near side . My rationale is that you get more water and crap on the near side due to road camber.

Elly got named after Eleanor the Mustang, because I bought her just before going to see the remake of Gone in 60 Seconds. TWC named after her number plate. Myrtle was Purple Myrtle (even though she is blue). Ugly Betty, Desmond named after a previous owner. Bella just seemed to fit.

@@HubNut It might make sense at some point, maybe next time you pull the engine, to get a new complete harness and then make the modifications that you actually need to it (and do it all with nice quality crimps and heat shrink etc), then swap the whole thing out at once. Given how simple the wiring is in these cars, i imagine that's not that expensive, and it may be more reliable in the long run than continuing to patch up what you have.
