I must say your laid back manner of tackling mechanics in your videos, gives untold strength to us non mechanics in considering and undertaking tasks to keep our beloved 2 Cv's on the road, thanks.

The more I see of the 2CV, the better I like her. Very simple and straightforward design.

It is nice to see someone who likes oddball vehicles. I am an air cooled VW fan. The 2cv is just too under powered to handle US Interstate highways. My 67 23 Window cruises at 60 mph all day. The 64 Beetle, when I get it restored, will also be able to deal with long runs on the freeways.
@HubNut6 жыл бұрын
News just in. A 1980s 2CV will sit at 60-65 all day very comfortably.
@julianparker60906 жыл бұрын
Citroen did think outside the box when they designed the 2CV. That fix went really well. Noticed you had a similar problematic issue that I have. The 10mm spanner going AWOL. I own several 10mm and 13 mm spanners, which often go AWOL even when I've been careful where I've placed them. The same sized sockets are almost as mischievous.
@68xperfectx6 жыл бұрын
Julian Parker i agree. I've bought loads of stealth spanners.

Another good job Ian. I took the Jag out for the first time yesterday in a couple of weeks, it rained and no wipers! so I checked the fuse wiped it off put it back and hooray! wiper action. Good old Lucas. Also nice to hear you call locking pliers, Mole Grips. Out here in NZ they never know what I'm talking about.

You did better than I did on my 27 year old 308,000 mile Honda Accord, it had the plastic bushing on one of the wiper linkages fail, surprisingly Honda still sells them and they weren't that expensive. However I didn't index every thing as well as you did and got to tear it apart and do it over again.
@HubNut6 жыл бұрын
I failed to get a video of it, but one of the wiper spindle bushes failed on the Nippa a couple of years ago, and it's only done 34,000 miles! Managed to free it off. Getting the mechanism out was interesting, even on a 'simple' more modern car.

Nice to see the Wartburg! My old 85 plate 2CV suffered the same, we drilled the spindles and put a bolt though.

Just brilliant idea to have the spindles as a separate piece that can be changed.

I've seen it on two Smart Cars, where the rod disconnects. And the wiper starts to washwipe the vehicle parked next to you. The temporary fix is the fingers of steel, through the vents.

Nothing worse than the wipers giving up on you in the rain! Happened to me about twenty years ago on the M4 in a Ford Sierra. We stopped to tie some string to the arms, then me and my mate pulled on it through the open windows with impressive timing! 1234,1234! Lol

We don’t get a lot of rain in Southern California, and I don’t remember the last time I changed my wiper blades..............( don’t tell anyone, I think I’m just too lazy to change them ) Interesting to see the 2cv wiper assembly. 👍

Ah, simple to repair cars, reminds me of when I used to help repair my dad's Austin Cambridge and Maxis years ago, a few spanners and the jobs done! Now u need a laptop,smartphone and a degree in electronics to sort out a flashing warning light! Interestingly the 1979 Triumph Dolomite we had from new, although built for The UK market, had the wiper arm spindles on the 'wrong' side!
@HubNut6 жыл бұрын
Yes, wrong wipers were a thing in the 1970s. They changed them for LHD. Australia also insisted on them being the right way around. Good on 'em.

I really enjoyed watching this repair video. Although I'll probably never own a Citroen 2CV is was awesome to see how to work on and replace the wiper motor and linkages. 2CV wiper parking can be changed from lhd to rhd and vice versa by removing the crank from the motor and replacing it 180 degrees out of phase from where it was originally.

While driving along somewhere on the M25 a good few years ago in my Citroen Dyane in heavy rain, I decided to investigate a water leak coming from under the dashboard. I pushed my fingers into a convenient hole in the hope of tracking down the leak - bad idea, I got my finger stuck in the moving wiper mechanism and still have the scar on my finger as a reminder. There was nowhere to stop, I just had to nurse my finger till I home.

Those wiper wheelbox spindles are actually cream crackerd Ian you will get a very slight bit of movement but those are fubar, it could be the linkage but new wheel boxes boxes would do the job and lube up your motor bushes before re fitting. Regards

Well known that 10mm spanners and sockets go the same way as pens and socks, they just disappear into another dimension! Can I suggest you get some shelves installed in the garage, and then perhaps a small bench with vise would be good? I have done the same, so all my shelves are now full, and the garage floor is just as bad as before. Also still can't find the 10mm socket :-D
@NOWThatsRichy6 жыл бұрын
Darren Coull also the cardboard all over the floor would annoy me, I'd give the floor a good clean and coat it with some concrete sealer, that way it's easy to clean.

The only people who have nice, tidy garages are usually the ones who do not work on their own vehicles! Even a small project requires dozens of tools and makes a big mess. Giving the wiper mechanism some lube should make it last years longer than running it dry. An interesting unitized assembly.

@HubNut6 жыл бұрын
Yes. We get those and red kites.
@ianvirco58976 жыл бұрын
Look at 3:21, it's a Red Kite, the wing shape with the Carpel joint pushed slightly forward ( buzzards are straight winged ) and the longer, narrower tail which just about has the V visable. Tut, Tut, using a mole grip on a nut, invest in a good quality adjustable spanner for those occasions when you encounter an odd size, you'll probably need a metric adjustable for your Japanese and French cars and an Imperial one for TWC......
@HubNut6 жыл бұрын
I thought it looked more buzzard myself, but I wasn't really paying attention.
@ianvirco58976 жыл бұрын
Bird watching has been a sometimes intense interest for over 30 years ( no i'm not a twitcher but i've been close to it in the past ) and we now have both Buzzards and Red Kites where i live near Milton Keynes so i'm familiar with both of them, i was basing my I.D. on the curved appearance of the wings, at 3:30 the reflection shows the wing leading edge curved back, typical of a Red Kite, though birds do have the annoying habit of looking like other birds at times.

@fk45156 жыл бұрын
They could be legally imported to the USA until about 1966 or 1968. But like many minimalist cars they never really caught on in the states, mostly because they didn't do well on our expressway/Interstate systems, the Autobahn caused German manufacturers to make cars that ran faster and thus would perform adequate on US highways. Other European countries (France, Italy and Great Britain) who had almost punitive taxes on larger displacement engines limited their prospects in the American market.
@HubNut6 жыл бұрын
Back in 1966-1968, the 2CV still had a 425cc engine and all of about 18bhp. Not ideal for highways at all! 2CVs can now be imported in the USA. I have several US friends with them.
