Adapting the Mercedes OM617 diesel to Jeep NV3550 transmission - Special Reserve Episode 3

In this episode I demonstrate DIY flywheel balancing, if somewhat unsuccessfully, and then walk through the installation of the Doomsday Diesel Mercedes OM617 to Jeep AX-15 adapter. However I use a New Process Gear NV3550 instead of the Asin AX-15.

Your technique for machinist work is spot on. I was a lathe operator for several years and it takes a long time to learn the best way to do things. I assume your putting this into a Jeep? Could it be put back into the car. Hence a manj shift MB conversion. Would the driveline match and the shift lever position be correct?

You could put it back in the car if you used a 2wd AX-15 or NV3550. The 2wd variants of these are a little rare. Lengths would be different, you would need a new driveshaft most likely. The shifter position may not be ideal, I couldn't tell you. Both these transmissions are not car transmissions, and the gear ratios on them are probably not ideal. If you used a MB to GM adapter you could probably run something like a T56 and get better spreads, but 99% of people doing these conversions are putting them in SUVs/trucks so they want to use a truck transmission, so I don't know how much info is out there on using them in a car.

Hey I seen your comment on using jet 2 oil in an engine and was wondering if you think it would work in a vw 1.9 diesel

I'm sure it would, but that might not make it a good idea. I'd think you would be better off using Shell Rotella T6 personally, unless there's some reason it doesn't work for you.

do you think that nv3550 was or is the best transmission for that om617 or would you recommend a different one? 4 sp, auto, or t18 , ax15

I don't know. I went NV3550 over the AX-15 because it has a synchronized reverse, and looking at the gear ratios it *might* work out a little better than the AX-15.

Nv3500 came in dodge v8 patterns too. 3.9, 5.2, 5.9, early 4.7... I'm also working on finding a nv3500hd to om617 kit as we speak.

Thanks! Unfortunately they aren't the same, the NV3500 is GM standard V8 pattern (IE SBC pattern), or at least they all are that I know of, and it is an integrated bellhousing and can not be removed. The NV3550 is a shorter bellhousing, and used the Jeep I6/V8 pattern.
