I was lucky to spend a few days with the family on holiday in South Wales. I made a few trips to the beach and coast to play portable ham radio. I felt that there were lots to learn from this experience including keeping antenna connections cleaned and making sure the radio is protected.
I'm a licensed amateur radio operator from the United Kingdom. My KZbin channel features videos focusing on operating portable radio from various locations plus how to videos, tutorials, insights and conversations in the hobby.

Great work Carl. I have just done the same sort of thing in North Wales. I just couldn't deal with the sand getting on the radio (ft817) plus it got into the treads on the pl259. Good job 👍🏽 73

In place of radials, give aluminum window screen a shot. I'm having great results, quicker to deploy and retrieve, and a much smaller footprint. I'm using 36" x 84" suggested by KB9VBR Only problem is not as convenient to carry as radial in a bag.

Might be the answer to quick deployment from the back of my Land Rover though 👍

Tenby is lovely, not too far from me but holds bad memories. i was 4 or 5 and on holiday and got stung multiple times by a swarm of wasps.

Lovely spot, as close to the water makes a huge difference, and a chair and beer normally go together with that kind of activation hi. Propagation reports are like the weather men, never really get it right. Last week I worked zs6 on 40m ssb, but not another sig was heard all day hi. Hope my 5w cw on 20m will get to the uk later. 73 .

Nice one Carl. Amazing that Tenby beach is all but abandoned during August 'summer' holiday 😆 That sand can get into all those little 'crevices' !

Hi carl, I really like your new location tho play radio, alot of really nice scenery to boot! I also like your antenna setup, I purchased a setup similar to yours and am excited to try it out. Also "radio dog" seems to enjoy his outing too, playing radio and enjoying the day. Thank you for sharing your radio adventures, I throughly enjoyed it.

Picturesque view of the Tenby coastline! I'm definitely going there when (not if, just one day) I set foot onto British soil - these beaches, especially when clean look beautiful. Keep up the great content, hope you're well!

@@M0SZT I feel ya man! Actually, as a young ham radio enthusiast, I'd much rather drier weather as well. However, we here in VE3 (Ontario) have had ridiculously humid weather this summer, not to mention occasional but persistent wildfire smoke that was quite the pain in the neck, because you'd feel it the second you walked out the front door. Hope things dry up for the last little bit of summer for you folks across the pond, eh?

Well done Carl. I love Tenby. My mum lived in Narberth for a while and I know that coastline well. We must go to Dale in Pembrokeshire together one day - I have a secret spot for radio there.

Hi Carl, looks like you were having great fun! I have a 703 and have been wondering what sort of portable bag to get for it. What is the bag you are using there ? It seems to suit the radio nicely. Thanks, Sid

I'm having the same problem Carl with my slidewinder I have replaced the fly lead for the top inductor ring seems to work now.. 73s de G7KMT

I've spoken to M1ECC before about the fly lead. It's way too stiff which with extended uses causes failure at the connection. I made a new lead using the silicone insulated wire that is used for LiPo battery packs which has lots of highly flexible strands. I also removed the plastic from the ring connectors and used adhesive lined heatshrink over the crimp as this gives better flexibility and strain relief. It's perfect. I did suggest this simple improvement to M1ECC but was told the wire is too expensive however they will send a replacement if theirs fails. In my view, the wire is not too expensive. It cost £0.30 for the length I used. 73 M3KXZ
