I really like your website and this KZbin channel. You are a presentation style suits me perfectly I didn’t notice you saying anything about how it is possible for the E153 MR2 transmission to bolt up to the 2GR motor. It didn’t look like you are using a bell housing adapter, so I am assuming that there’s a factory bell housing that will mate the two. Also, you mentioned alternative final drive ratios of around 3.6 and 3.9. How are these achieved? If there is a good resource for this information that I should be looking at please point me to it and I will pester you no more. At least not until I’m ready to buy parts.
@FrankensteinMotorworks4 жыл бұрын
Just the normal E153 bellhousing bolts to the 2GR without an adapter, though the later bellhousing (93+) matches more bolt holes than the earlier one. The 3.9 is from many other e-series transmissions, you need to swap in the ring gear, output shaft and oil pump drive gear. The 3.6 is getting pretty hard to find, it's from 2 years of the camry with the E53.

@FrankensteinMotorworks5 жыл бұрын
I'll put it on the list of things to do but the 2AR-FE build is ahead of it. As for sourcing them, they are getting rather thin on the ground these days. The newest one is 28yrs old at this point and it wasn't a very common option to have the V6 manual Camry. I'd strongly suggest just looking for the 3.933 gearset instead. The 3.625 made more sense before the rev limiter was able to be raised to 7200RPM. The easiest thing to do to refresh an E153 these days is actually to use a solara v6 transmission and swap in the MR2 mid-case. then just reshim the shafts and then run it.
@bujin54555 жыл бұрын
@@FrankensteinMotorworks I just noticed when I was driving my 2GR that I got WAY better MPG closer to 3k than to 4k RPMs. And that means I really needed to stay around 70MPH. I thought the 3.625 would be really nice from that point of view, as 85MPH would be positioned just right! I've also noticed that when you go above the 6k RPM, toward the 7200, the engine doesn't run as smooth. The power character changes a lot. So I try not to do that. But as a side note, I want to personally thank you for pioneering this build. The 2GR with the MR2 is just such a winning combination. @FrankensteinMotorworks5 жыл бұрын
Dean, Keeping it as positive as i can, I feel that my mount has a much better fitment and is designed to live much longer due to the rubber mounting as well as a design that avoids stress fractures. The rubber also does a much better job of stopping squeaks and rattles that make a car feel cheap. The video will unfortunately cover the 2-plug rav4 harness. It'll talk about all kinds of things that are still very relevant to your harness but it won't give a pin by pin breakdown of that harness. The reason for this is the rav4 harness is significantly easier and the barrier to people doing their own harness is high enough as it is so i wanted to pick the easiest one to do.

I have an off topic question. Does 2grfe also has the stripped head bolt problem of 2arfe? My 2grfe has an external coolant leak on the head gasket area of cylinder number 4. The engine was never overheated and has had regular coolant change.
@FrankensteinMotorworks4 жыл бұрын
Patrick, I've never heard of that issue with the 2GR-FE, but i've also been running the 2AR-FE for a decade and never heard of it either. You have to remember that the people i deal with use these engines in their sports cars, we generally abuse these engines in different ways than the way someone abuses a daily driver that gets driven year round. For example the 2AR-FE i just pulled apart saw a bit over 30,000 miles of hard endurance racing above the normal 6400RPM redline and when i disassembled it the only issue it had was a leaking rear main and the forward thrust bearing was starting to show significant wear because of the heavier clutch.
@PAT1114 жыл бұрын
Frankenstein Motorworks , Sorry I meant to say the stripped head bolt problem of 2azfe. Thank you for your insight.
@PAT1114 жыл бұрын
I did some more research online and figured out it is a somewhat common issue on high mileage 2gr. The nitrile rubber (nbr) surface coating sealing the number 3 and number 4 head gasket will disintegrate over time causing seepage to the exterior of the engine.But most of time it will be just be a small external leak. In most case the heads and block are fine. I guess they got the head gaskets from the same supplier as Subaru.

I have a totaled 08 sienna with a 2gr and a 2010 camry with a 2ar bolted to a EB62. I would like to put the sienna 2gr into the camry and keep the eb62 6 speed. Do you think this is going to be a shit show? It seems like it would be mostly bolt it up and go since the 2gr came in the camry, just not stick. I want to be able to pass emissions and street drive this pig though. What do yall think? I 5 speed swapped my 99 1mz with the E153 out of a solara and even with the manual ecu/harness i still pop 50+ codes for missing solenoids ect.
@FrankensteinMotorworks5 жыл бұрын
This actually won't be that tough. both setups have a matching electrical system so you'll have to move wires around but the actual wire names and whatnot will all match and there won't be any relays and fuses missing. The EB60/62 does bolt right up to the 2gr with minor grinding in a few spots. The question is if the trans interface is at the same spot on both applications. i suspect it isn't quite at the same spot so you'll likely need a custom right side mount but that won't be too much difficulty. As for passing emissions, it completely depends on your state. I can help you with an ECU modification to remove the automatic transmission fault codes on the 2GR ECU.

I have a 2013 Avalon and find there are little to no options for any mods. Any recommendations on your parts that would jive in the newer 2jR? Are the modern Toyota ecms tuneable?
@FrankensteinMotorworks5 жыл бұрын
They are not tunable by many people but it honestly does not matter. The stock ECU tune is pretty damn good. the problem is breathing. Replace your y-pipe and exhaust with a better system and you can fund up to 70hp. This is not a joke or an exageration, this is what we got on the MR2s before i figured out how to tune the ECUs. adding the ECU tune to that gave us crisper response everywhere which won't matter with your automatic transmission and an extra 15hp. 15hp is nice for sure but it isn't the majority of the gains.

Frankenstein Motorworks thanks for the quick response and wealth of knowledge. I’ll look into an upgraded exhaust system.

Is there any way to make this swap CA legal? I was reading an old post from Gouky on MR2OC that you can make the OEM manifolds from certain donors fit but wasn’t sure if this was enough. What exactly would prevent/allow this swap to be CA compliant for road use? Thank you!
@FrankensteinMotorworks5 жыл бұрын
As far as i know, unless someone gets an E.O. with a few modifications approved, the only way to do it would be with a Lotus Evora ECU and Harness. You'll also have to do some work to make the lotus ECU happy to make it not throw fault codes but thankfully the Evora does not have an evap system so that's one less thing to deal with. And by the way, I'm Gouky on the forums. I'm the one that has been posting info about this swap for over a decade now :)
@rollerderb5 жыл бұрын
Haha oh, I had a feeling but wasn’t sure it was you. On the CA BAR website I saw under “Type 1” that the intake and exhaust can be modified to accomodate an OBD2 into OBD1. Do you think this would allow for the aftermarket headers, y pipes, etc as long as emissions pass? www.bar.ca.gov/pdf/Engine_Change_Guidelines_BAG_04.19.18.pdf

@FrankensteinMotorworks5 жыл бұрын
You cannot use the 2018 ECU and harness if you intend on using my tune. If you just want the stock tune and are willing to wire up the immobilizer you can feel free to use that harness and associated immobilizer.

When will the EB62 transmission swap kit be available?
@FrankensteinMotorworks4 жыл бұрын
There is demand for an EB60 swap kit and i’d like to make one (it would target the eb60, not the eb62 because the eb62 is very rare, you would be able to use an eb62 by switching out the shift levers). But i don’t feel that the demand would meet the price required at this point to justify the R&D. The kit would need three motor mounts including one with a custom rubber insert, complex shift linkage that would likely also require custom longer shift cables and custom axle shafts or stubs. Between all that and the cost of the EB62 it would bring the cost of swapping one in to about $4500 which i just don’t see the MR2 market accepting. (note that most of this money would not be spent on the swap kit but the whole number is still the critical one that would turn people off. the swap kit parts would be similar to the MKIII MR2 trans stuff with shift cable costs added in and the axles being about $1000 instead of the $250 mix-n-match solution i figured out there.)

What type of manual transmission can I use ?
@FrankensteinMotorworks4 жыл бұрын
Jessie, it's generally recommended to use the E153 transmission. The S54 has also successfully been used many times. If you're willing to do something that isn't 100% bolt-in you can also use the EB60, EB62 or EA60. Those last three will require custom mounts and shift linkage but they do bolt to the 2GR-FE.

What can you do with just messing with the computer for my rav 4 and how much
@FrankensteinMotorworks4 жыл бұрын
Honestly not much. The stock tune does not hold back the motor at all. Without some changes to get more actual air into the engine you'll be hard pressed to get much power at all. There's a few people that claim they sell tunes that will give you more power and show power gains of 10-15hp but it's worth noting that if you just switch to premium fuel without the tune you still get that same 10-15hp gain.

It's certainly still not free but I've seen many people do it for pretty cheap by waiting for used parts to come around and getting a great deal on a motor.
