Is it safe to store $100,000 of gold at your home? An email came in with this question, and there's just no way I'd ever be qualified to answer that question. Everyone has to decide for themselves. I can tell you some things to consider, though, that might help with securing your gold onsite.

About 40 years ago my father in law had a large amount of cash. He was partially disabled so had my daughter climb up into his attic and stash it. A couple of her cousins were present at the time. When he sent her up to retrieve it, it was gone. When more than one person knows something, it's no longer a secret.

The problem with loose lips is that they tend to belong to loved ones who don't have an appreciation for the risk associated with having a large cache at home. That's why I prefer a Depository. Yes, the amount they buy silver eagles for is less than what others are paying on eBay, but the peace of mind is priceless. And that brings to mind the fact that when the SHTF, getting any price online is liable to be a non issue. Of course, if that's the case, then you run the real risk of getting robbed on the way home from the Depository. Again, when the SHTF, getting ANYTHING shipped is liable to be a non starter (ie. Covid, when the whole world came to a stop). It's enough to keep someone needlessly worrying. Therefore, spreading it around at home and amongst different locations makes the most sense to me. JMHO

I have been robbed in the past. It was by someone who was in my house, and was jealous of my stuff. I have a home that is somewhat ordinary looking from the street, but it is nicely upgraded inside. It is filled with high-end art, furnishings, etc. Once this person was in my home, he learned of the nice things inside, and he decided it was worth the risk to steal it. It leaves a scar, to be a victim. It is very hard for me to want nice things in my home, as the envy from others puts honest people at risk. My point is this. $100,000 is very safe in your home if you do not tell anyone about it. Keep it out of sight. Do not advertise your wealth,. Oh, another thing, police can care less about helping a rich person reclaim their stolen items. The officer that I spoke with hated rich people, and said that anyone who can afford to own nice things, can afford to have them stolen.

I had a friend of mine about 10 years ago that was murdered along with his wife and stepson the wife survived long enough to tell the police who did it. They were slashed to death left to bleed to death on the floor of their own home. It all started when Bill started bragging about the amount of gold coins that he had in a safe in his office. He owned a house moving company and his employees knew that he had a lot of gold in that safe. One evening about 9:00 one of his employees paid him a visit told him he needed to discuss something with him that was very important. Bill invited him into his office the man pulled a knife told Bill to open the safe bill did not open the safe he was stabbed to death multiple times, that's when his son come walking in and he was also stabbed multiple times Bill's wife was upstairs had no idea what was going on but heard a noise and went downstairs and they cut her pretty badly and left her to die. Turns out there were four of them that targeted there place. They took the entire safe and drove about 30 miles away to a remote location. The safe was found the next day but there was nothing in it. Bill's wife survived long enough in the hospital to give the police the names of all four a robbed and took their life. I consider her a hero she held on just long enough and now all four of those men their former employees have been locked up and will remain locked up for life. Very very sad story. None of this would have had to happen if Bill would have kept his gold in a safety deposit box or some other means that wouldn't be just sitting there. A safe that is visible is about the worst place you can keep anything valuable. The safe tells the thief exactly where the valuables are and some are willing to go to any length to get it. My dad always said keep your money in the bank. I know now that he was correct or at least keep it somewhere where it's not visible.

Suggestion: By a used safe that is fairly difficult to open. Fill it with concrete so it weighs 200+ pounds and permanently seal the door shut. Chances are a thief will struggle to remove it and leave the premises with a smile on his face. Option: Add a tracking device so the police will be able to find him.

BTW: Be sure to protect you "SAFE" from fire by using a water buffer designed to boil off in the event of a fire. Water boils at 100 degrees C and anything inside of a safe protected by that fact of physics (including paper) should be fine. In many metal safes - this can be as simple as a 12-40 oz beverage can sized container of water with a wax plug sealing a small hole in the top of the can. When temperatures in the safe exceed the wax's melting point - the seal will disintegrate allowing the water to boil when it reaches 100C. The inside of the safe will remain at 100C as long as the can contains boiling water. In many fires - this will be long enough to protect the innards of the safe as the structure around it burns away. Paper kindles at 230 degrees C so keeping the safe at 100C by using boiling water as a "refrigerant" makes complete sense.

When insulating my attic, I found a tiny "room" where my furnace exhaust goes from the basement to the roof. I don't have anything currently in there because it's difficult to access but over the years I've kept things I didn't want found in there. In my youth, I kept my "stash" in the shower curtain rod. Thank you, this is valuable info! 👍🏻 Years ago, there was a pseudo documentary series called “It Takes A Thief” wherein 2 reformed burglars would scope a house, then get the homeowners’ permission to “break in” after the cameras had been set up to film the carnage. It was terrifying to see what pro thieves could grab in under 10 minutes. On another note, I am bemused at comments from gun owners who are determined to protect their safes. This plan only works if you live alone! 😱 If you have a spouse or child threatened by a thug with a gun or knife, you are gonna open that safe. Much to be considered here! I think your “layers” concept is on-point for best security.

About ten years ago our friends watched a video that shared how to put all their precious metals/money into a black PVC pipe seal both ends and then put that pipe inside a larger drainage pipe in your backyard. "Modify this to fit your situation". It worked amazingly for over ten years. However, the house was sold and it wasn't until last year that the friend's old memory clicked in to remind them that they had left that pipe full of their precious metals. They went back to ask the new owners if they could retrieve it only to find out that the place had been demolished and a parking lot was there now. No one knows what happened to the PVC pipe. One of the things I learnt fairly early on was that buying coins is essentially collecting, and you like having your collections close to you because they are pretty, shiny and you want to play with them and cuddle, and lick... I prefer bars... They are plain, ugly... they are what they are, nothing more nothing less. They are cheap and there is absolutely no emotional attachment to them. Slap’s “Eleven Rules For Storing Gold & Silver At Home” 1) A safe advertises hidden valuables, but if you must use a safe, bolt it down and load it with VERY heavy weights. 2) Store some decoy/sacrificial coins/cheap jewelry in an easy-to-find location. Then hide the good stuff well. 3) Unless you use a safe, NEVER hide your stash in a bedroom or bedroom closet. 4) Same as #3, but insert “study” and “pantry”. 5) Forget hollowed-out books, fake soup cans, etc… your stack will be stolen in less than 5 minutes. 6) If using a desk, bookcase or shelf, make sure your hiding spot won’t be revealed if these are tipped over. Because they WILL be tipped over. 7) You WILL want frequent access to your stash (to add to it, look at it, or (god forbid) take from it)… don’t make access difficult (behind drywall, buried in the yard, need a sledgehammer to get to it, etc.). 8) Unless using a safe, the best spots are in plain sight and LIKELY TO BE OVERLOOKED, or they’re multi-layered (meaning you have to move this, shift that, lift this and open that in order to access your stash). 9) Make sure someone you trust (spouse, financial planner, estate attorney, etc) has a sealed “open in the event of my death” letter describing where your stash is hidden. 10) With the exception of #9 above, NEVER EVER talk about your stash or that it’s in your home. 11) Never use a hiding spot that can be discovered by a contractor doing work in your house or yard. Just ordered a TL-30x6 yesterday. Good rule of thumb for safes is how much you plan to store should dictate how much you spend. If you plan on 50k of "stuff" then you need to look at a proper safe that can be insured for that amount, check with your insurance to see what is required to meet their requirements for insurance. Spent 3 months shopping and researching but it is necessary to understand all the details of a proper safe. Of course don't tell anyone.

I know telling “good guys” about your stashes is not a great idea, but having a note locked up somewhere with the stashes listed would not be a bad thing. One day you may up and croak and your family has to go on an Easter egg hunt of the century to hopefully find it all 🙂 In my grandfathers case, he got too old to remember where everything was as we were moving them to downsize homes. I was finding $100’s in old boots headed for the dump and 10oz silver bars and rounds up in the attic. Like to think we got it all but I have a feeling the new owners have a few free gifts stashed in the walls of that house….

Good advice. I am more than average interested in safes and have done a lot of research into every aspect of what makes a safe safe. Sturdy ticks off most of the boxes of what a safe should be, at least if you are considering the price. If money is no option, look into Graffunder. A TL15 rating is also a good minimum level to be considered a true safe. Sturdy's are not TL-rated, but they would with no doubt pass the test if they tried. Sadly a lot of people are douped by boxstore "safes" with shiny paint and huge locking bolts, but in reality they only get a tin can with a strong looking door.

Storage services are a tall hurdle. I’m sure they are honest and trustworthy. I simply can’t be sure the service will always be in control of the their own situation if things went south in their region. It’s a mental issue….for me. I realize things could go south in *my* region. But, being the basket case that I am, I prefer to go down with my own ship. I may even go down while they remain afloat. Couple of tips: 1. Don't hide your gold or cash inside something that a common thief would normally grab anyway, e.g. inside a speaker or the back of your tv. 2. Distraction and diversion works. The government does it all the time. 3. A visible safe is a target, no matter what you tell yourself. 4. Trusting 3rd party means you are also at the mercy of 3rd party, whether it's a bank, a vault service, or your uncle Jimmy. 5. Think like a thief.

Don’t put all your apples in one place. The top of the kitchen shelves is a great spot if layed flat on top. Under your kitchen cabinets behind the baseboards. Under you attic insulation. Stainless steel silverware? Why not real silverware? Most people use stainless steel, they’d never think the silverware drawer could be holding a small fortune. A little here and a little there. You don’t want it all in your safe. Personally, mine isn’t in any of those places. Another idea is to purchase fake bars, and they make some pretty realistic ones that are very cheap. Even your ventilation. Let the thief think he hit the jackpot by finding your stash of fake metals. He’ll gather it up thinking he cleaned you out. Use your imagination.

Yes since I was a little boy (it seems to be instinctual) I was hiding my money in the ground, & even then I was robed of just forgot where I hid it. :) But I was less than 10 years old at the time. I've heard about a man that buried some gold at his mountain land, he never could find it again, & did end up selling the land at a later date. So you need to do in in the light of day & just act like you are working, on a water pipe of something then watch the spot to see if it's been messed with for a couple of weeks or more, & make sure you don't forget just where you put it. And I did know this person that told me that he buried 66 oz of gold & after about 4 years he went to dig it up & got real scared because he was not finding it, but then did find it about 15 inches further down. It went down because of the liquefaction effect, it was sandy soil & you can bet every time a rain storm came &/or a auto drove by causing vibration, & he said that if it would have got further down there would be wetter sand, & a big rain storm hit after he got it, well he was glad he had it. Now he did have it in a pipe going vertical, if it was horizontal it likely would not really have sunk to speak of. I had this friend who died just about 2 weeks after telling me he did not know if he should tell his son where he buried his gold Krugerrand, I don't think he ever told his son, I wish he would have told me. He bought them after his wife & kids tried to have him judges as incompetent so they could take control of his money, he was quite rich, but he won the case & then sold most of what he had & put a lot of in in gold. Well still what you say is likely true you just have to be real smart about it.

The typical home security wireless camera runs on a very common frequency. I found that out when I had a reverse camera in my car, and wired it separately from the viewer/screen. With the camera off, and the viewer on, if I got within range of someone's wireless camera, I'd pick up that camera in the viewer. Even though its more work, hard wired security cameras are the way to go.

This video had a throw-away line about “people rattle off all the reasons why you shouldn’t use a bank safe deposit box…” but then doesn’t give any of those reasons. Can someone explain this? I would think that bank safe deposit box would be a great place to keep gold, especially if you have a small amount. It would certainly be safer than the vast majority of home safes.
@DR1776

Because all the bank has to do is lock the door. Placing in a bank-inside-a-bank, means you cant get to your assets a full 2/3rd of every day.

@@DR1776 OK, but how is that different from a safe deposit box at a vaulting service? Especially one 5 hours away? Seems like that would have the same issue with even worse drawbacks.

@@ljhcmh614 I have a much better reasoning as to why many, including myself, are apprehensive of such things. It’s as the saying goes: If you don’t hold it, you don’t own it. Those storage companies + banks can give up your assets at any time, especially when they’re robbed or ordered to do so by the courts. Imagine a judge unfairly orders your stuff to be confiscated. You lost all of those precious metals, hiding out in the open, just like that. They can all be forced to turn over all assets at any time. Never trust anyone but yourself is my advice.

When a bank gets shut down by the Feds, they lock the doors, and you won't have immediate access. If it is a SHTF situation, you won't be able to throw your stack in your bug out bag before you head out of town.

PS Ive heard of some old school guys who literally keep black powder on the inside walls of their safes in case someone tried to hack into them they will have a small explosion to kill or maim the thief...Seems extreme but I still love the idea lol
@drbones3rd
@drbones3rd 2 жыл бұрын
Not a good idea at all. That would be considered an explosive booby trap and regulated by the BATFE. If someone did break in to the safe, it exploded and the thief injured or killed, the owner of the house would be in a shit storm. Felony.

@@drbones3rd Its not a booby trap since you have no intention of cutting into the side of your safe your simply keeping it out of the reach of children and other people, you can literally have the containers on the shelf on each side...Like I said sounds extreme but people certainly do that...I wouldn't feel all that safe hacking into a safe knowing that...but then again im not a desperate drug addict or scumbag thief so maybe they dont think that way...Plus coming home to your home that's been robbed it also a shitstorm pick your proffered flavor... lol

@@cutlerylover good point. Unless the thief is using an acetylene torch, the gun powder would not do much. Most safes can be accessed quickly from the sides with a grinding wheel that are sold at any box store. Best thing I did was just add an independent alarm system to my safe with motion mercury switches.

@@drbones3rd Every situation is different when people talk about breaking into safes im not thinking about the pros in rich neighborhoods Im more focused on the drug addicts with crow bars and maybe an angle grinder...But there's no way to really protect your stuff its all deterrents and anything can be broken into by someone...

It's an interesting question - because if Gold shoots the moon - 1 ounce (1 full weight coin) could be 100K. I'm just being an extremist here for this question. You could have - 10 oz of gold at home right now - that's 20K. If gold moves up 5x - now it's 100K. So to me it's not the value as much as the weight. You have to be comfortable with the weight of it being stored. Also commenters below mentioned tracking devices - fully secured areas. It's all a balancing act.

if one were to keep some gold and silver in a good quality safe, then I suggest that one will have to be armed at all times on site so if one were to get acosted by surprise one day, one will simply use their protection tool to eliminate the threat immediately upon the event.
