I just drove this route almost the same time you did but during the first week of August '21. West Texas might be hot, kind of ugly and gritty but it's a uniquely inspiring place, too. Whatever you might feel about the environment, oil remains the lifeblood of our economy and driving along the I-20 seeing the endless wells and gas flares makes you realize the scale of the operation that goes into ensuring the rest of us live comfortable lives. Being in the Petroplex invoked a sense of national pride in me. The people who live and work there get to carry that pride on their shoulders every day and it shows. Every person you meet has a connection to the oil industry. Oh, and as you can tell by this video, Odessa/Midland can definitely lay claim to being the pickup truck capital of the world.

Great video, Kyle. In fact, a lane expansion is in the works. Desperately needed. I remember when no locals took that road. It was so far out of the way! Now it is in the middle of everything.

I've spent 10 years delivering blue rhino propane bottles in those towns. I remember when 349 from mid to lamesa was just a single lane on each side

Good one again. I'd say the road could use another lane in each direction. And not that many cities can say they had two American Presidents call it home. Waiting eagerly for your videos of the D/FW area!

I20 is currently going through a facelift. All overpasses are being rebuilt so the interstate goes over as well as some new interchanges that did not exist before. Also, by the time this project is finished, the interstate will be 6 lane with 3 lanes in each direction.
@KCWanderlust
@KCWanderlust 2 жыл бұрын
I'd say 6 lanes would be a welcome sight along this stretch, given all of the left lane hogs.

The most boring drive imo. I worked out west for a few months and drove from Dallas to Odessa every weekend. It was an absolute beating 😃

Odessa, Ukraine was the final major and easternmost stop on our honeymoon two years ago. And while that part of Ukraine isn't exactly a lush forest, I do remember it being a little more verdant than Odessa, Texas and environs.

I can kinda see where this is going. Lubbock, then Amarillo, and then possibly a loop back into New Mexico?

If you look at the times these were filmed that I post at the opening sequence of the video it would probably make more sense. We only have three videos coming from the texas panhandle before we continue back on our series with I-10. I even stated in Episode 22 right at the end of the video that the I-10 series was resuming beginning with Episode 30.

At least the scenery's more interesting to see than the 1st 40 miles of I-20. & seeing all that traffic while you were driving thought the Petroplex, I hope given the increased population growth, TxDOT does widen I-20 in the future. I noticed that they were putting in work in the video. But I doubt it's to widen the freeway!

At least the overhead bridges were made to allow an extra lane. This stretch should be a triple laner.

They are. TXDOT is adding a lane in each direction to I-20 From just east of Midland to west Odessa.

Midland/Odessa area needs an I-220 (or 620, whatever's desired to call it) to run along south of I-20 as a bypass, as it's often a bottleneck going through there, but don't count on TXDot doing anything purposeful anytime soon, as they are notorious for running at least a decade behind on widening current roadways and constructing new ones to match the growth and transportation needs of any given area within the state...

Luckily Construction Had Started Last Year To Expand This Interstate & Is Expected To Be Complete In 10 Years. That Long Wait Will Definitely Be Worth It! The Traffic On This Interstate Has Been Horrible For Several Years Without The Extension.

I think I will remember the terminology behind the word Petroplex. I have been known to coin the word petrocracy to describe the world of aristocratic politicians employed, and earning their massive monetary fortunes thereafter, in the petroleum-mining industries.
