The second class smoking room has to be one of the best looking rooms ever designed on a liner. It’s not as detailed or over the top as first class might be, yet still could be mistaken for a first class space on another liner. It just looks comfortable. Same goes for the lounge. Those window decorations are top notch.

Same with the library. I didn’t realize just how beautiful it was until now.

First class is spectacular, yet I would feel more comfortable in 2nd class. Don't know if it is because I was born and raised in a house with furniture like this, though.
@abcdeshole Жыл бұрын
You’re right that the way second class is decorated does look like some interiors we would still occasionally find today or whenever you were growing up. The first class styles are alien to today’s taste and considered totally unacceptable; you would never see that outside of a palace museum like Versailles or the occasional vulgar billionaire’s house. It’s very beautiful but we just wouldn’t know what to do with ourselves in a Louis XVI parlour. Titanic’s second class spaces look like somewhere that people today could feel good.

I would feel very comfortable in first class on a ship of that era. I've traveled on first class accommodations in the QE2 back in the early 80's and as comfortable as it was, it didn't compare to the posh beauty of the great ocean liners of the early and mid 20th century. Some in the group were traveling in second class and frankly, I would've preferred it. It was more relaxed and fun with top quality service. Though there was a definite social class distinction back then, the people were charming and well educated. The first class crowd of the QE2 were nothing but a bunch of uneducated, pretentious snobs. Don't get me wrong, I would have felt very happy to travel second class in the Titanic... well, maybe not Titanic.

I've always felt like I'd be more comfortable in second class but I've never really been able to come up with a reason. First class is indeed spectacular, but it just doesn't feel like me. Second class, on the other hand, feels more natural.

@@abcdeshole that is because over the years more people became second class .. if you think about the ticket was like 1800 dollars in todays money .. if you fly economy to Europe it will cost you around the same today . The middle class got larger and with that cultural changes came along ..

@@visionist7 He wasn’t even supposed to be on Titanic. He was originally scheduled for a third class ticket on another ship, but was rebooked on Titanic due to a fuel shortage at the time. Him and his friends were upgraded to second class for the inconvenience. How lucky and incredibly unlucky at the same time!
@visionist7 Жыл бұрын
@@williamrisbridger60 it's always fascinated me how every ship scheduled to sail was scavenged for coal so Titanic could depart on time. It's very lucky Titanic wasn't fully booked as a result; without the coal strike she would probably have had ~1500 people aboard.

Still no second class cabins. There were 3 types( 1) second and first class alternate cabins; (2) regular second class cabins;( 3) second class and third class alternate cabins.

The fact that the mast is so close at the door at 4:53 just shows how flexible and thin the people were. I love 1910s designs

You get the feeling 2nd class was much closer to 1st class than 3rd class. Its 1st class without the trimmings, spaces still look comfotable and inviting. The average 2nd class passenger was likely Middle class to upper middle class and evena few rich people being economic. The Titanic is an example of the snobbery and social elitism of that era. The fact you can peek into 1st class, is part of the aspiration ethos of that era. Some passengers may look through and think "I am 2nd class now, but by 1915 I will be in the 1st class - don't worry about icebergs or world wars".
@DerpyPossum Жыл бұрын
It was worse on Olympic; The 2nd class promenade on that ship extended forward, which ended up allowing 2nd class passengers to quite literally peer into the bow window of the 1st class A La Carte restaurant...

Happy to see you got the 4th (ventilation) stack right, Titanic had 3 boiler rooms, and so 3 stacks with smoke coming out. The 4th was put in for 'cosmetic' reasons and for ventilation.

One thing that always strikes me is how low the ceilings were and how claustrophobic it could feel as a result. Ships like the Lusitania tried to combat that by using a lot of skylights and a lighter colour scheme to make it seem brighter and more airy. The first ships that really tackled the issue came a year after titanic was launched. Germany's Imperator class of ships were larger than Titanic and also had a revolutionary new feature. The uptakes for the funnels were split along the sides of the ship, rather than going straight up and restricting space. This created a lot more space and allowed for rooms which were much bigger and airier.

Even though it gets underlooked by her 1st class accommodations 2nd class is really stunning her smoking room lounge and dining saloon are comparable to 1st class aboard other liners while the 2nd class stair case is a little bland in the way of it’s just your plain old stair case the wood paneling adds an extra touch of luxury and though their part of the boat deck and promenade are small on most ships 2nd class was prohibited from going on the boat deck I think 2nd class on titanic is beautiful and stunning and is extremely underrated

It breaks my heart knowing most of this area was blown to pieces in the stern when she sank. I’m sure the stair case is there but all twisted up and caved in. So sad to see.

You can really see that society has changed a lot since 1912. Firstly people are flying across the atlantic now a days and to divide people in different classes like this doesnt exist in the same way now a days. Dedicated smoking rooms are a thing of the past too.

The transatlantic air market still very much finds a place for first class although it's not the ultra fancy affair you'll find on a middle eastern or far eastern carrier.
