Second Class Titanic Tour

Second class has too often been overlooked in Titanic media for decades - not as overly ornate and fantastic as first-class while not as baren as third. It suffered from a "middle child" syndrome yet contained some of the most comfortable appointments aboard ship.
Here is a tour of Titanic's aft 2nd class staircase and dining saloon, crowing off with the top-level of B deck which will be available in our free Alpha.

@@lea-analowery4585 The Adventure Out Of Time game did an OK job showing the forward staircase, but only included a small area on F-Deck with two cabins (including one of the most important people you visit in that game), and had the dining saloon locked. Pages 94-97 of Titanic: An Illustrated History feature a photo of a 2nd-class cabin aboard the Olympic, as well as the staircases, one of them showing the B-Deck landing of the forward staircase featuring an elevator and smoking room entrance. Pages 64-65 show the big three public rooms: the smoking room, dining saloon, and the library (which combined the functions of the reception room, reading/writing room, and lounge in 1st class and similar to the general room in 3rd).

Graphics in engine demos usually look _better_ than day 1 release products. Since they're always optimised for the hardware used by the developers and don't have to be rendered in real time, they can afford to put way more detail in and cull way less. That's part of why people always get so pissed about big hyped-up console releases of multi-platform titles-because they expect to see the same graphics they saw up on the big screen at E3 being produced by their WiiU.

@@DistractedGlobeGuy thing is, in THG's case, it will probably be the opposite: the level they use for those visual demos are badly optimized, full of light glitches, and overall filled with placeholders. Even demo 3, which released in 2017, had a morre polished look than them, and there's a reason for that: they were not made as a demo for the public originally, that was made as an afterthought.

well yes, and no. while it was certainly equivalent of some lesser sized ships as you say, it wasn’t the equivalent of first class on ALL ships. Take most of the Cunard ships for example.

The disparity between 1st and 2nd class in the olympic class was too obvious but in my opinion the Cunard ships had a more subtle way of 1st and 2nd class accomodation difference.

It's a myth that the Olympic class were the most luxuriously decorated ships of the time; far from it, in fact. The bulk of her interiors - even in First - were just standard H&W designs. The Lucy and Maury were were more lavishly and individually decorated. And the France, which was just about to enter service, blew them all out of the water.

@@happyjmc 2nd class on titanic at the time was comparable to 1st class on other ships of the time. Also Titanic's third class were also a step up from many other ocean liner companies. 3rd class had a fully functional dining room, and were given 3 full meals a day which other companies wouldn't even provide for their own third class passengers.

It's particularly fascinating because, not many people realize this, second class men were the worst hit by the disaster of any group. Only 14 second class men survived out of a total 168 survived, which is a survival rate of 8.333...% . Meanwhile 75 out of 462 third class males survived, bringing the rate for them up to 16.2%

It's sad because they had the highest death toll, too. Like 97 percent of the men and alot of the women. They weren't rich enough to afford to escape the cataclysm, but also too polite and not brawly enough to be useful muscle on a lifeboat or to fight their way to survive. So almost all of the second class aka middle class died. Nothing changes... That's where we all are too so just think about it. They were too passive and didn't take control of the situation , they just accepted the orders and died. :(. Nothing changes as I said. /Future for us is going the same way. Passivity and wanting to socially conform was what held them back.

And look at the chairs!! All hand crafted. Good lord, what a waste , no wonder the Irish artisans commited suicide after the ship sank. .. that's something you should read about. Tragic. The beds, panelling, wood carving of everything, polishing, hand quilted chairs and hand dyed chairs and fabric, , the chairs are all just stunning individual works of art ...te fire places, lighting And the glass work...... ahhhh it's so pristine. That's pride and quality, there. I always have felt, that losing all that amazing stuff (let alone ceramics, cars, the possessions all lost in the ship too.. the garmets and paintings, pianos, cars, all of that quality created, hand moulded stuff ..... Tbh that's the worst of the sinking. It makes me wince watching the ship sink every time and I've watched this movie about 100 times since 1998, when I was 7!!! And being an artisan fine artist myself now, its just more upsetting, seeing the work get destroyed the first time it's even used. What a waste!! It was built to all last - yet never even got to be enjoyed!! What a waste of resources and seriously talented human labour ! 😩 Imagine losing THAT much so quickly at once and being unable to retrieve it or even save it. The amount of labour and work and care and quality. Damn... I'm Australian but 100 percent Irish/UK/west europe DNA/heritage too...98 percent Irish(cork). For those curious I traced out the path the camera takes in relation to deck plans. We are in compartment 14 as we climb the 2nd Class stairs. This is Aft 2nd Class stairway and only runs from F Deck to B Deck. The Forward 2nd Class stairs also starts on F Deck but continues all the way up to the Boat Deck and contains an elevator (something I did not know until further scrutinizing the deck plans). It is interesting how compacted 2nd Class is. Both main stairwells are very close to each other and nearly every major space (Dining Saloon and Entrances) has access to both. On E and F Deck water tight doors do block the path in the major hallways (2 on E Deck; one on each side, and 1 on F Deck found on the port side). 2nd Class were kept tightly together in this area with staterooms on D Deck, E Deck and F Deck. We start at the end of the corridor on F Deck on the port side walking towards starboard. F64 is already behind us and as the camera starts to move we pass F62. The two doors at the end before turn left (and starts moving us forward towards the bow) are a bath to the right and the Women Lavatory directly ahead. After the turn as we walk to the right is No. 5 Hatch Trunked, followed on the left by a small corridor leading to F58 and F60, then two linen closet doors. Directly in front of us should be a water tight door but its noticeably absent (I found a missing thing!). We turn right and make our way to the stairs, the Gentleman's Lavatory is at the bottom of these stairs as we leave. We pass through E Desk staying on the stairs. Directly ahead as we exit onto E Deck is the Assistant Pursers Office. The hallway to the starboard side as we swing to head up the next flight of stairs contains E99, E100, E102, and E103. This area is fairly dense, between forward one compartment is the main 2nd Class Entrance which spans the entire beam of the ship. Coming up the stairs we arrive at D Deck with the Dining Saloon directly ahead. Note the size of the room compared to the previous two decks. Water tight bulkheads stopped on E Deck, so now there is a lot more space for the rooms - allowing for the massive dining saloon to be uninterrupted. It spans nearly the entire compartment length (at least from what I can tell). This is compartment 13, for reference. My guess is that the room is set for breakfast; this is judging by the fruit in the middle of the tables. The encasement behind the piano is the forward 2nd Class set of stairs. After heading back to the stairwell, we make our way up to C Deck. This is distinct for the base of the aft mast. The door tucked behind the mast leads to the Second Class library and the outer door (on the starboard side as the camera pans to go up the stairs - there is another identical to the port side) leads the 2nd Class Covered Promenade. This entire area on plans is marked as 2nd Class Entrance. There is access here to the Forward 2nd Class stairs as well. Heading up again we reach B Deck; the top of this staircase. Here if we were to head out the doors on either side is the 2nd Class Promenade. It surrounds the 2nd Class Smoking Room. Directly forward of this is the 1st Class A la carte Restaurant and the Cafe Parisian, separated by a wall. The camera finishes by spiraling down the staircases well. Notably the staircase ends on F Deck. However the plans I used to document this journey clearly indicate there is another set of stairs down onto G Deck. These stairs might be hidden behind the paneling using a door, thus closing it off for passengers. This seems likely as the G Deck plans show the up stairs and have a marking of "service". The camera moves too fast and its angle is poor to determine if a door is present there but I assume it is. Plans used to document journey: www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/titanic-deckplans/

Second class on titanic was equivalent to first class on most other large liners so it was definitely seen that way at the time. The rooms were spacious and private, the passenger areas were nicely decorated, but the ticket didn’t cost a fortune. Even third class was considered very generous, as on other ships people would not be served food and would sleep in open berths.

As a middle child, thank you for this! I never imagined it'd look so light and airy. First Class is stunning, of course, but almost seems surreal. Third Class is less surreal, but is still more stark than we'd expect on a cruise ship. Second Class is luxurious, but tangible. I could imagine myself there. actually, quite a lot of 2nd Class passengers on both Olympic and Titanic apparently did envy one aspect of 1st Class; the Gymnasium. It was the most popular spot when 2nd Class was being allowed to tour 1st Class prior to departure. So because of this, Britannic was actually intended to have a Gymnasium for 2nd Class. So glad you made this video on Second Class! For me personally I think Second Class is the most fascinating of all the classes given the challenges and anxieties that class had to keep themselves ahead. This can be seen in the Second Class of Titanic and the way it looks. Some of the most interesting passengers were also in Second Class, like Lawrence Beesley and Joseph Laroche. Now I get see where they ate, the stairs they climbed and their cabin entrances. Thanks for making this video and highlighting the overlooked class!!

I could literally feel the gloss over the wood from the dining chairs, and the indention where the two pieces of wood were glued together in the middle. It's amazing with such deep and realistic visual representation can open other senses all by the power of your mind.

I love how you guys not only get the general arrangements and decorative details right, but things like the table settings. Many second class passengers were just as accustomed to fruit-knives and fish forks as richer folk, and to us today such refinements are like a dead language. And those large dining saloon portholes let the sun sparkle on the silver and glass just right. Thank you.

This is incredibly beautiful and stunning. 2nd class had beautiful rooms and I love they had their smaller version of the Grand Staircase. Funny, I'm actually having breakfast now while looking at the 2nd class dining room part.

Definitely one of the lesser known parts of the ship. Not as bare bones as third class but also not as glamorous or shiny as first. The top of the staircase is especially beautiful, the way the sunlight enters through those windows feels arguably more natural than the dome light in the grand staircase.

Titanic's second class accommodations look more elegant than I ever imagined, the oak woodwork in the aft staircase and the dining saloon look very comfortable, and the gentle piano music makes the tour through the dining saloon enjoyable. I recognised the second class purser's office, deck outside the library, and the entrance to B deck promenade, so I admire the incredible details, I could absolutely travel on second class, this makes me feel like home.

Not a bad dining room to be honest. I'm surprised at the amount of wood paneling - it looks really nice. It's obviously no where near as opulent as the first class dining room, but it's still quite cozy in its own right.

Nice to see some of the 2nd class partd of the ship. I am waiting to see the Engine Room with its two massive Triple Expansion Engines and the Middle Steam Turbine Engine, plus all the Electric Generating Turbines that kept the ship lit during the last few hours before it finally sank.

well, whatever you read was wrong. while 2nd class on the Titanic was really good, it didn’t compare to 1st class on many other ships of the time (contrary to popular belief).
