Bread sauce is best made with the fond or drippings from pan-fried bacon, cornflour, salt, pepper, nutmeg, allspice, bayleaf, whole milk and the roughly ground heal of a stale loaf. I've had sawmill gravy with sausage and biscuits in the Carolinas and it's a very similar sauce indeed.
