I own a 12 valve dodge 3500 that I use for RV transport. I've said this for a long time. the 7.3 powerstroke and the 12 valve Cummins are the best diesel engines produced in a pick up truck. argue if you will but you can't fuck with either one of those motors.

I love both trucks to death, my 2001 F250 7.3 compared to my uncle's 1996 Dodge 3500 Cummins are both awesome in terms of longevity, but as far as simplicity and ease of maintenance goes, the Dodge Cummins certainly has it.

I ran the shit out of a 7.3 with my contracting business. Loved it, it gave me no shit after a lot of hard work and heavy towing. I towed 14k on the regular. As much as I loved it and I am a ford guy, I still like the 12v better.
@Bens359pete3 жыл бұрын
Both. I have owned a 12 valve and currently still own a 7.3. I have gotten all the power and fuel economy I have needed from both. As long as you maintain them both good and keep small things fixed so big things dont come down the road, both will do over 1 million miles

Like you said they are totally different beast, The older the simpler as a mechanic, also the older the more basic for comfort both ride and cup holders etc. I personally like the older trucks straight axle 4x4 etc because they act and drive like a truck, if I wanted a car I would buy a Lincoln, I am just not a car guy. I've always been a Ford man and the 7.3 is definitely a work horse but I will never say a bad word about a Cummins motor. Cummins has made their mark in the world by making great and reliable motors and making a contract with Cummins is the smartest thing the Chrysler corporation has ever done. The Cummins motors has sold thousands of Dodge trucks.
@fordpowersmoke27257 жыл бұрын
For your 7.3 cold starting, you said it's had new glow plugs? Always install motor craft. Anything aftermarket is junk no matter what they say. Did you check the relay? I'd also ohm the fuel bowl heater. Check HPOP pressure while cold. With a block heater she should start right up no matter how cold it is.
@truckcampertraveler73696 жыл бұрын
Hey just so you know locking hubs does not mean you have a locking differential all it means is it takes the stress off of the drivetrain and lets the wheel spin freely when disengaged therefore saving where in tear and Fuel it’s not a locking differential
@k9leadstheway5317 жыл бұрын
My 7.3 has 200k. The glow plugs system has to be working together perfectly. Your plugs, GPR, good batteries, starter, and harness. One of those things are bad it won't start in the winter very well haha. But I've had my truck for 5 years and just replaced stock glow plugs. Trucks never let me down. I'll take the 7.3!

Budget comes into play a ton as well. While the prices are leveling out more and more, the 7.3l are generally cheaper than the Cummins. IMO, the obs 7.3l are nicer. Also, if you're getting a Ford diesel, the 7.3l is the only one I'd touch as Ford hasn't gotten anything right since.

I owned way more gas engines than diesel. But the 2 I do own fire right up right away no matter the temp. 12v and 6.5td. Im also the type that buys a used truck if it has higher miles I will rering hone bearings and place all the gaskets. Does the 7.3 need a refresh? My 6.5td had hard starts . Low compression and blow by from 300k miles of use. Refreshed it and all was fine.

Its usually 96-2000 blocks that crack . Mine is a 96 but that blocks year date is 95. I did get it with a blown head gasket. Thats what warped my cylinders or caused excessive wear I believe. I own a mill . I decked the heads and honed the block all was good in the world.

The 2nd gen dodges have what's called a central axle disconnect or CAD. They have a sliding ring with a vacuum operated solenoid fork that engages a split within the right axle shaft. With the two pieces disconnected the spider gears in the diff and the right and left axle shafts spin still and but other than that when the 4x4 is off it is the same as the hubs being disconnected on the Ford. I think dodge was trying to appeal to people who don't want to get out while stuck in a mud hole to engage their hubs haha. I'm with you though. The simplicity and ruggedness of the hubs is better. I've had a branch pull the vacuum lines off of the CAD on my 2nd gen 24v before. That wouldn't happen with hub locks. I will say they are definitely tough though. I managed to snap the left front axle shaft on mine. The CAD was still fine and dandy though haha.

my 96 7.3 is rated at 215 horsepower and is a smoother ride and a little faster off the line than my 98 ram with a 12 valve cummins which is also rated at 215 hp. but with the cummins 30 to 70 mph is a lot quicker acceleration than the 7.3. I have always wanted a 12 valve truck for the simplicity which I've never gotten from my powerstroke Fords. funny my 98 ram looks exactly like his 96.

if i had to chose i love the 7.3L engines but if i wanted it to be easy to work on id deffinetly chose the 12v i-6 they crank easier in the winter because they have a heating system instead of glow plugs doing all the work the heating system takes a load off the only problem with the 12v cummins is they have a tendency to pop off the lines on the turbo witch makes them run rough they get worse fule milage and you run a risk of blowing a head gasket if you have a stock filter with the cover over the actual filter part because it wont let the turbo breath but for the both of them there easy 500k mile trucks ur going to have small things go wrong

People dont undersrand that its not a 2nd gen Trans thats bad. The design is immaculate, but the assembly and simple weight and power of the motor makes them hard to keep up with. You can get a lot more power out of that Dodge with some minor modifications and you should have mentioned fuel mileage cause that is an important factor when purchasing a work truck in which the Dodge gets around 21 mpg vs the Ford 12 mpg. The 7.3 and the 5.9 are so easy to work on compared to the 6.7 powerstroke or the 6.4 power stroke. Unless you know the tricks that come along with the 6.4 and 6.7, you will definitely be confused when looking under the hood...

R4shm3n yea 6.4s and 6.7s are a pain

Personally like the 7.3 idi but I’m a respecter of all builds yes I would own a dodge and yes I would own a Chevy we all give each other crap but at the end of the day a truck/car will last you for a while as long as you keep up with maintenance

I'd compare 12 valve to 6.0 power stroke then 24 valve to 7.3

bruh..... i own a 7.3 and that statements dumb. 12v n 7.3 reliability wise are damn near the same. just dodges fall apart around the motor.

Lol the inline 6 is the more efficient design, hence why heavy duty diesels are basically all inline engines. More proof is the 12 valve isnt hard to make power with, the 7.3 is not easy to pull power out of = less efficient.

Like your videos a lot. I have a 96 7.3L. For us dummies, maybe state the truck year so we know what is going on. Not criticism -- I am just diesel dumb. Not looking forward to my first winter in Ohio with my 7.3 omg!

Stop referring your entire truck as Cummins! Cummins and Chrysler/Dodge are two completely different companies!
