after watching this i checked and found that my friction wheel and bad bearings. I watch so many videos on my problem and was convinced it was my timing chain. Thanks so much for the video that saved me a lots of time and money.

That is great to hear. I suspect a LOT of chains get replaced and in the process "its fixed" because the shop also installs a new drive belt. I'm not saying the chains don't fail, they do, but everyone has "timing chain on the brain". LOL.

Thanks that's something I should look out for. I have a 2012 Mini Cooper hatchback and as much as I love some things about it but, they are not exactly the quietest engines. Anytime I lift the hood it sounds like someone speed typing. And they're very difficult to work on unless you have the right tools. That said they're well engineered and great as long as you are very meticulous about caring for them. I'll probably go back to Honda's after this though because they can take a beating and give you no trouble whatsoever. And inexpensive to fix. And last year I feel like I could be licensed BMW repair person from All the troubles I've had with my Mini Cooper.

My R56 was making a peculiar sound for some time. After watching this helpful video, I decided to replace the serpentine belt, water pump pulley, and friction wheel. As I was uninstalling the old, damaged friction wheel, I noticed that the pull tab, shown at minute 1:39 in the video, was barely budging and seemed stuck. With a bit of effort, I managed to free the pull tab. tried to start the car again, to my relief, the sound was gone. It dawned on me that the issue was with the stuck pull tab preventing proper water flow to the engine once it reached a certain temperature. By resolving this, I essentially fixed the problem at no cost. Hopefully, this experience can assist others facing similar issues.BTW thanks for this video

I had a very similar noise an thanks to this video I got rid of both the bad engine noise as well as a weird whining noise. Only after realizing that not only was it missing ribs off the belt as well as having a strip hanging off an slapping around. Thankyou!!!
@leestringer2 жыл бұрын
My car is making the exact same noise. Thought the engine was shot at first. Had local mechanic check timing chain and found no problems. He's a good mechanic but he doesn't have much experience with Mini Coopers. He didn't seem to know what was causing the problem. I'm gonna check this tomorrow. Have a feeling this is exactly the issue. Thanks a lot.

Same noise in my 2010. Checked belt twice around perfect, Pulled water pump pulley, some cracking but intact. pulled tensioner, idler perfect. started engine, noise gone. Rechecked belt, no problem. 3rd time around I noticed a white chunk in the crank pulley groove and sure enough the chunk was making a bump in the back of the belt. I removed a tiny stone about 1/8 inch diameter, reinstalled pulley and idler, noise gone

Would you say the 2013 generation is somewhat immune to the known timing belt trouble? I have the same noise for months, adding more oil seemed to help? Then it suddenly got louder. Didn't inspect it yet but will this weekend and report back. Yep, the video was spot on. Belt had 3 sections missing. I act had a hard time releasing the tension, had to go out and buy a 1-1/4" wrench. Then I had to take off a "cover" that goes along under the hood so that I could even get to the tension nut (which was a giant 1-1/4" on my 2013 mini - contrary to another video where he uses a 13/16" wrench).

2013 isn't immune, but its better than the N14 (previous) Turbo engine

Does the check engine light usually turn on when you have this issue? I have a similar sound in my 2015 mini countryman s. The check engine light is on, and I've noticed that the radiator fan is running after I turn off the car.
@danjreed11 ай бұрын
No, this in no way will cause a CEL to appear. If you have a CEL AND a noise, be sure to check the codes and see if there are camshaft or VANOS codes. If so, get your timing chain fixed ASAP - DO NOT WAIT.
@single_cam91996 ай бұрын
Now with that tensioner make a tap noise when you blip the throttle I’ve been wondering why my car is slow I had the scanner danner hooked up today and I was watching the advanced timing gradually accelerating it’s good but blip it you hear a tap and on the screen it pulls 10 - 15*

Yes, the belt will fail and take out the friction wheel. My battery voltage is also fine, the belt isnt slipping, its damaged.

@danjreed Жыл бұрын
If you have a handy friend with some tool skills - its not that hard to change. The job does take two people, mainly because there is a pin that is used to lock the tensioner, and it can only be pressed while someone holds the tensioner in place.
