We are doing MWC Kindergarten and loving it. My daughter is thriving and having fun with the games. I don’t find the games overwhelming, I think they are sometimes needed to help the child grasp the concept. I might skip some games if I see my daughter master the concept but she always wants to play the games 😂…Moving soon to level 1. Yay 🎉

Awesome to hear! Yes, my son still always wants to play the games even when it's a very easy concept for him--he loves the games. My younger son is using MWC K. :)

Also, what i really love about this program is how easy it us for advanced kids, because it is conceptually so strong with a less writing focus. I love how much my 5yo can use her gifted brain and not be held behind by not as strong handwriting

Yes--I have found it easy to adapt to a younger student who is quick with math--the amount of writing is not overwhelming and review activities can easily be omitted when they aren't necessary. We're about 5 weeks into using 3rd grade MWC now and I would say that the handwriting required starts ramping up, but it's still been doable for my 6 year old, it's just that some of the boxes are a little bit small for 6 year old handwriting (makes sense...since it's 3rd grade...)

We love MWC but I’m not sure if we want to use it on its own!!! My kids seem to have math gaps even with good curriculum so I have to find ways of working with the gaps!!! We have the pdfs!!! We find the games awesome for teaching math!!! If I see issues I use the enrichment review but if they understand it I don’t make them do the review!!! I find MWC is fun and deep!!! My older kids love their math binder they have made!!! I love that there is the right amount of teacher involvement with MWC!!!

Identifying the specific math skills students need to work on and then doing targeted work to build those skills is so important!

One question and one comment: When your kid is "ahead" of "normal" expectations, how do you plan your own expectations about how much work gets done in a year? Do you just keep going at whatever pace happens, and then it just adds up to what it adds up to? Comment: I love MWC, and my two younger are using it. Funnily enough, even though he enjoys it, my oldest son wants to switch to Math Mammoth like his big sisters when this book is done. I don't know if it is just the desire to be like the big girls, or if he wants independence, or what. But I find it funny he wants to switch 😂

I would say that I don't tend to plan very specifically what will get done in a year...but I keep in mind that in this situation it'll probably be a "little more" or "little ahead" of whatever I even plan it to be, if that makes sense? What I DO plan is whatever we're doing "next", I just don't necessarily know WHEN we'll be ready for "next." I just keep rolling along, keeping an eye on how mastery is going in subjects where skill-mastery is the goal. Normally I try to stick to a lesson a day with MWC, but with a child who clearly has the content mastered, if he has moments where he wants to do 5 lessons in a day....sure, go ahead while I'm busy with little brother. haha! This video was kind of delayed coming out so we're actually about 5 weeks into 3rd grade MWC already...and no, I did not expect that we would be starting it that early but now I'm guessing we'll be finishing 3rd Grade MWC by the end of this school year, lol.

@@lisaroper421 I just go with their pace and stop when we have holiday breaks. Which means that my very new 5yo is 26 weeks through Grade 1 math because that's where we got to before my Christmas break. I kinda find it frustrating, but we did a year and a half of math this year and that was perfect for us, but also hit the perfect developmental breaking spot as well, so I'm learning to be more flexible and often have to have the next thing ready when they are about half way through, because I just don't know when they will finish

Do you feel MWC is enough on its own? I thought it was but when I see people using two math curriculums it makes we wonder am I missing something??? I have six kids, a couple with special needs, and so I don’t have a lot of extra time.

I have a video explaining my "why" for using multiple math resources in my homeschool: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGPLq5ybpqhmaKcsi=ZTThi3tMGXFBe3Ai MWC is an excellent curriculum that balanced both teacher-led learning and independent work, and it can definitely be "enough" on its own, although that's a hard question to answer because: Enough for what? A student who deeply struggles to master math is probably going to need more practice and more review than is scheduled in any curriculum. A student who loves math and finds it delightful might never think that completing a single lesson a day feels like "enough." Does that make sense? Keep in mind what the goal is and what the needs of individual children are--balancing those with the reality of your availability, time, and energy...whatever you choose, work away at it consistently and offer your students as much review as they need to master skills as you go.

Sometimes the screaming birds in your videos sound like really angry children 😂 I compared the scope and sequence for 1st and 2nd and they really seem so similar so I’m excited to watch this 🎉

I don't know if the birds are just having a bird party sometimes, but certain days they seem especially loud. 2nd grade and 1st grade do tend to be pretty similar in content/skills across all math problems, but the challenge of adding and subrtracting is really ramped up. In 1st grade all the basic facts are still being mastered, typically, 2nd grade is when kids get to master 34+79 and 188-99. Fun times! We also did more with graphs and fractions in this level.
