Somehow i predicted they were gonna pick a song like this...but i didn't like it as much as the judges did. It sounded nice but i didn't like the vocals from the backup singers with it..that's just me though i'm sure the majority of people liked it

Say what you will about the bass being tough, the drummer being spot on and the lead being exceptional. That is surely true, BUT; The dude with the beard, singing the high harmony, is the main one who gives them their distinct sound. I am surprised the judges haven't noticed or mentioned that.

Tim and Avi are both GODS, but you know, the thing Pentatonix missed during the Sing Off was really highlighting the plain and simple fact that the ladies love the basses!

Matilda Wilson I couldn't agree more! I think PTX were mainly focused on getting their stuff down and introducing a new style that had never been done before, so Avi (being 1/2 of the necessary Meat & Potatoes) was too preoccupied with covering the bass to sing low solo stuff. It wasn't in their arrangements, it wasn't their style on the Sing-Off.
@dansatter7280
@dansatter7280 9 жыл бұрын
Matilda Wilson Country is also pretty bass-baritone heavy in the industry, so a bass solo isn't so out of the ordinary, whereas when Pentatonix was doing Pop/Electronic music which is primarily focused on tenors/altos. The melody at any given moment would go to one of the trio singers.

I'm sure most basses participating in the Sing-off were talented, but it seemed only Tim was showing it off. Most others just stood in the back as background harmonies

I was thinking the same thing. I think it's because groups that have 8 or more singers try too hard and have so many different harmonies when they aren't needed.

Jewel's comments were right on: this was a great example of "how to build a band", and it highlighted each of the five component members (the bass singer is great, but it's the full sound of all five, pitch-perfect, that makes it work): Austin has the voice (and looks) to be a 'star' (in any kind of singing, musical theater production, etc.), and, with each guy having a great range, they are able to build up a huge, well-blended group sound (w/plenty of baritone, plus 'drummer'). That they make it look and sound so easy masks how difficult it is to get that pitch-perfect blend (I keep harping on pitch because I'm a musician and I love it when singers or instrumentalists working together really lock in the pitch and harmonies -- doesn't happen all that often). Plus, it's a great arrangement (another testament to their talent, since most of them are song-writers & arrangers, not just singers; and they make their own arrangements). Well done!

They don't need dance moves to be good; they are all talent. Sean is right, they are consistent and they do have all of the parts to be an a capella group. A lot of groups could learn from Home Free.

Calle Sol - Displaying good sportmanship for helping out their rivals, plus they got a few extra seconds of airtime. How does Home Free sound like a full orchestra with just 5 guys? The "fullness" of their sound remind me of Pentatonix.

PTX's most recent stuff sounds very "full." Go back about a year and you can tell they didn't know how to fill the massive sound gap between Scott and Avi. Recently though, you can tell they have it figured out and they sound great because of it

Yep, just a bit of extra drama/theatre for the show. Austin had to dance in theatre numbers so he was not unschooled, Adam Rupp is clearly good enough to mimic Michael Jackson moves and Tim loves to boogie. So yeah, they could already dance better than the show wanted you to know.

Roarmeister2 to add to that it went #1 in canada and Tom is in the Canadian Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It was his most popular song to date. Your right about most posters being young. These guys perform the song well. However, I wish people would stop calling this song "country". Just because a country group covered a rock song, that doesn't make it a country song. It would, more correctly, labeled as: A country-styled cover of a rock song.

This song was originally performed by Chris Ledoux who was a country singer. Then it was covered by Rascal Flatts. Home Free used the version Rascal Flatts did. It is a country song.

@@theresaashley1346 Umm....No. Life is a Highway was originally a rock song by Tom Cochrane who wrote the song. Chris Ledoux's version is from 1998 and Tom Cochrane's version went to number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and number five on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart in 1992.

Imagine if VoicePlay had chosen to show off Geoff Castelluci, then season 4 would've been the battle of the basses. Avi was the first introduction to a real bass in Season 3, and Tim shows he can be showcased in Season 4.

I like how they made this song really sound like a party anthem near the end. However, I have to say that the judges (especially Shawn) are pretty inconsistent with their critiques. Last season, they told Afro Blue that they need to try different grooves besides jazz and explore different types of singing. But this season, Shawn told Home Free that it was good that they stuck to what they know, stuck "in the box" as it were. And I feel like that is unfair because this week was party anthem, and Home Free could have totally stepped out of the box and done something other than country. But I think throughout this entire season Home Free stayed pretty much country, and didn't really get criticized for it. Whereas Afro Blue got criticized week to week to get out of their comfort zone. Then, when they did as the judges said, they were criticized for going too far out of their jazzy roots! Like, poor Afro Blue, there's just no winning for them! Even if I wanted PTX to win, I think Afro Blue should have gotten 2nd. Listen, I'm a HUGE fan of Home Free. I love everything they do. I just have problems sometimes with the inconsistencies of the judges, even if I love them for the most part.

YES! I love Home Free, and I love that they have a distinctive sound (and the judges respect that). I literally just watched all of Afro Blue's performances and I wish the judges would have let them stick with one style. I LOVE jazz a capella so I thought their earlier performances were flawless...later in the season, the performances were still good, but to me they just didn't seem as authentic somehow. I think PTX were always clear winners, but if the judges hadn't confused them, Afro Blue could have come 2nd or 3rd.

Kristine Silmaro This was originally a rock song, not a country song. They did in essence step out of the box.
