Everybody knows just how good Home Free is, one of the best acapella groups EVER! But when this recording was made, do you realize that Joe Bonsall (tenor) was 67 years old...that Duane Allen (lead) was 72...William Golden (baritone Santa Claus) was 76...and Richard Sterban (bass) was 72? After all these years, the "Boys" have still got it and don't take a back seat to ANYONE!
@darkestar458 жыл бұрын
I've read it couple of times that, even though the Oak Ridge Boys still have a number of years left, this was a "passing of the torch" so to speak. The Oak Ridge Boys even stated that they had recorded Elvira the way they wanted to all those years ago and so let Home Free have creativity discretion on the song. Only thing they asked was that a few things were kept in place. I can honestly see Home Free as the next generation's Oak Ridge Boys. They've even performed on the Grand Ole Opry twice now with an open invitation to return. From the videos of them performing at the Grand Ole Opry, the crowds loved them. I would definitely love to see them live.

@@darkestar45 they have a lot to endure, and years of creative adaptations to go through... even if they did more than covers that'd still be the case. If that's "the passing of the torch", they're running out of time to find their "Y'all Come Back Saloon". It's next to imposible to do what The Oak Ridge Boys did. Home Free can harmonize like crazy.. but they haven't found that song their voices are meant to fit into perfectly that'll create a new sound people can't get over. It's hard.. I'd be surprised if they do.

Some interesting facts: I'm 41-years-old and have been a musician since I was a kid. When I was 19, I was in a community youth music program (from my small hometown on the Oregon coast), and we played at the San Diego Sports Arena for the International Lions Club Convention...for an audience of around 20,000 people. On another occasion, we opened for The Diamonds at a fairly small show. You may not recognize them by name, but I gurantee most of you have heard their music. Their biggest hits were "Little Darlin'" and "Silhouettes". Even though they were fairly old at the time (they rose to fame in the 50's), they were still incredible, and we had fun hanging out with them after the show. Another time, we were performing at our own county fair while Tracy Byrd (the famous country singer...this was around 1999/2000, btw) was setting up for his performance that night. He heard us, and when he saw that we were a group of kids ranging in age from around 9 to 19, he went and got his entire band and crew, and brought them all over to watch our show. He then told our director if we ever needed anything..."let him know". We never asked him for anything, of course...but it felt good. I actually had tickets to attend his show that night with my family...but I passed it up to hang out with a friend who was moving out of state the next day...and he stood me up. Had I gone...that would have been one of two live shows I've ever attended (as an audience member, anyway). The only famous band I've ever seen perform live: The Oakridge Boys. And they were great. I only went because it was a family thing. I wasn't really in to country at the time...but it was an incredible show. That was around 20ish years ago, and to this day, I haven't seen any other live artists...unless you count The Smothers Brothers ...who are incredible...but their show is more comedy and variety act than a musical one (I saw them live in Laughlin, Nevada about 15 years ago...just a day before Don Laughlin himself called me in my hotel room to offer me a job at his casino after I drew a portrait of him). I was staying at his casino/hotel, and he actually lived in a penthouse at the top of the building...so I took the portrait to the front desk with a note, and asked them if they could see that he received it...and they did. I've always had an interest in business, and respected the hell out of what he'd accomplished, and was inspired by it. Being an arttist, I chose to thank him by drawing his portrait, with a note telling him what I just said here. He was apparently flattered by it and impressed by the portrait, so he called me to thank me, and just to chat a little, I guess? I was sort-of in shock at the time. When he found out I was actually homeless and lacking employment, he offered me a job in one of his restaurants. Then 2 days later banned me from his casino forever (long story...but just know I didn't actually do anything wrong. It was a misunderstanding, mostly due to him being overly-cautious as a result of being such a big public figure. I mean...he was not only the InSaNeLy wealthy owner of a casino or three, but he literally built the city his main casino was located in, which is why it bears his name. He was also kind-of a snobby jerk, from what I heard. I never got the chance to find out for myself. He seemed okay when I spoke to him on the phone...but that was one brief conversation.).

C Coleman probably because they are two different genre... Avi though was going to school to become an opera singer before PTX came about if you hear him doing that or other music he may not sound flat to you.. Avi doesn't sound flat to me but Tim is older and the country voice is usually more rich sounding which is why Blake Shelton always wins on the Voice.. look at Sundance Head his voice is rich but Billy's sounds flat even though he's a pro singer... it's genre that does that to ones ear..

Lizzy S I, too, admit that I have a hard time believing that “Home Free” always sings “a cappella” ! They - absolutely - DO NOT EVER use any type of “INSTRUMENTS” - except whatever SPECIFIC “sounds” they themselves are actually able to make ! It REALLY DOES “blow my mind” whenever I attempt to realize just exactly “how” they make bass note sounds &/or the sound which matches a particular percussion instrument !

Mmmm, not a true singing note. Whispering a note isn’t singing and Richard has a much more impressive range and depth. He can sing this hipsters pants off. Well, any of the Oaks at almost 80 and 80+ can sing these hipsters’ skin tight pants off lol.

+Daniel joshlin... I also made my own acapella group With my friends and we sound pretty damn good and we welcome any newcomers once we hear how good they are! I have a large vocal range just like Peter Hollens (Who is very awesome and if u haven't heard of him check him out!). He can go really high then down to Tim Foust's growl voice but I don't do that as often cause we already have a bass in our group only if I'm doing a harmony with him would I use my lower vocal range!. But that's pretty cool that you have a group to I bet ur pretty good!.

Elvira was the last song our family would sing at the end of our family get-together/sing-along down in the Glades (John's Branch area) of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Our family held it at my uncle's home who was the last one of 8 sisters and 3 brothers to live near the former family homestead. Before living in the Glades, the family had lived in the Sugarlands which became part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park so they had to leave. Times were extremely hard back then because of the Great Depression, and my grandfather had died tragically in a car accident coming home from work (he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp in the Great Smoky Mountains), but because of my grandmother's love for the Lord as well as other family members, they held it together. The Lord was so good to them through it all. Well, after singing a lot of Southern Gospel music and mountain music or folk songs, we wound leave on a good note by singing Elvira..♥😄I miss those good times, and I miss all my aunts and uncles and my parents who have since passed away, and I am certain they are in heaven. Thank the good Lord for my cousins who keep in contact with me through Facebook. ( I recently found out that my great grandmother's middle name was Elvira. She really loved music, too. )

My mom liked country music from the 50s and 60s an didn't have much patience for the "newer" stuff, but the Oak Ridge Boys were an exception, which was great for me because I enjoyed their music and was able to play my record (okay, I'm old) on the living room stereo instead of just on the small player in my room. This song was a huge favorite for both of us and so this collaboration was a particular delight. But the best part wasn't hearing a well loved song for the first time in quite a while, it wasn't seeing a group (Home Free) that I recently discovered and really like, it wasn't even seeing the Oak Ridge Boys again - the best part was that it looked like everyone was having so much fun and somehow watching that became fun as well. Just great.
