Wonderful Reel Dennis great to see.

Glad you enjoyed it. Some of these older reels are true classics. This generation of Shakespeare reels set the bar for quality. Best wishes - Dennis

I have one and I seen a advertisement for it 1963. They are nice reels and can be purchased at a low price. Get a 6 ft Wonder rod, makes a great rig.

Thanks. Yes these are very nice reels and if you can find them, get them. They will last forever

Nice job. I picked up that same reel last summer locally off of marketplace. I’m more of a Mitchell guy but that little reel is well built and I like the way it looks. I thought it was interesting that the gears ride on pressed in pins and that split gear in there is interesting. 1/2 of it is straight cut gears and the other 1/2 it helical cut. Pretty neat!

There was a whole lot of thought and engineering that went into a lot of these older designs. So unique versus the cookie cutter anyone's reels of today. The Mitchells, Shakespeare's and others of this time were clearly over-engineered and built to last. Thanks for the note - Dennis

If I'm not mistaken this is just a standard 2065, and the NL is just on the box to indicate that it didn't come spoiled with line.

I learn something every day! Thanks for the note and the clarification on the designation - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle NL on the box indicates no line , and theres also NL-2 which means you get 2 spools without line. There is also a code in the model number on the reel itself, it's the same system as the wonder rods but I'm not sure if it's indicating the same thing. The code just tells you when the variation was introduced, it doesn't really offer much helpful information. Certainly not like the Abu Ambassadeur codes 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 K J H G F E D C B A V U T S R Q P N M L For example my 2052EC was introduced in '68, the DE introduced in '76. I think the 2065 in this video is the QL Variant, that would indicate '60 for it's introduction which fits with you're age assessment based on the lack of Zippy on the box.

I did not buy this reel after I saw the schematic. I did not like seeing those e-clips. It is also smaller than the reels I collect. It looks like a very fine reel though and a friend of mine who got one of these and likes it very much. He does a lot of trout fishing. This is definitely a collectible reel. It certainly is an interesting design that is very different from a Shakespeare 2062. I consider the 2062 to be one of the finest Shakespeare reels ever made. This was a great video Dennis. - Chris

@@2ndChanceTackle I head back to the coast in about three weeks for more surf fishing this time in VA. We got very lucky the last time we fished at Sandbridge. My son-in-law got his PB redfish and I got my PB whiting. I hope we can catch some nice ones this time. I recently got another of those huge Shimano SSG7000 rear drag reels as that reel has been very lucky for me. After I caught that giant stingray with this reel it has continued to be a favorite of mine. I’m also going to use my Daiwa 8700 reel for the first time. - Chris

That's a nice reel. I always use standard wrenches and sockets on US made reels and metric sockets and wrenches on foreign made reels. Not a criticism, just a suggestion. Great content as always Dennis

what's your opinion on using Lucas, red tacky grease for reels?
@2ndChanceTackle2 жыл бұрын
I've used their oils and find them very good. I have not used the red grease, so I don't have an opinion on that one. My belief is that any grease that is designed for fishing reels will suffice. I don't find much difference between the ones I do use. Thanks for asking - Dennis

Do you think it has ever been serviced? Best estimate on age of reel? Well done!!! Thank you!
@2ndChanceTackle2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it was serviced, at least in the last 25 years! The age is early 1960s. That was a great find Scott. You should take it fishing! Be well - Dennis

I have a generic 2 liter parts cleaner that I got off of Amazon about 5 years ago for around $75. Check that site. I'm sure the brands have changed, but the basic unit has not - Dennis
