I like this one a lot. I just wish I was capable of using it. Speaking of wrenches, I keep my Mitchell wrenches nearby as well. I honestly think you could do this in your sleep or blindfolded. You know the Penn reels so well! It’s always a joy just to watch you work. - Chris PS. I got in a disappointing Daiwa BG90 reel today. It was missing the anti-reverse claw spring and the spring holder. Without those the reel is useless except as a parts reel.

Sorry to hear on the BG90! It will be hard to find those pieces. Maybe your reel will help others get a 2nd Chance - Best wishes Chris - Dennis

Good video and informative because I got an older penn Jigmaster 500 coming to clean up and service. Looks similar
@2ndChanceTackle18 күн бұрын
They are similar, but you would do better watching my video on the Jigmaster service here kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJColJ15rpeaabs there are differences between the two reels - Dennis

These older Penns are fascinating. I guess they aren't used much here in E.T./////bill

The poor man Squidder🤣🤣🤣🤣. BTW you can tune it with ball bearings?
@markfiges99919 күн бұрын
Noball bearings AFAIK, but with the plastic spols you can make a big difference on casting performance with different viscosity oils on the sindle bushes and pinion gear.
@IlMangustaKMRUTEAM19 күн бұрын
@markfiges999 It have bushes but maybe you can replace them with ball bearings like people did with Abu Garcias such as the 5000-6000-7000
@2ndChanceTackle18 күн бұрын
No, the bearings are stock and cannot be changed to upgrades

@@2ndChanceTackle also if you remove them and replace with ball bearings?

Heyyyyy Dennis! The reel handle screw wrenches... lookin on Ebay... there seems to be 3-4 models or sizes! Is there a standard/ universal Penn one please, or which do you suggest havin on hand??? Thanks kindly...

I use the Alan Tani wrench that is available through Mysticparts.com. The wrench fits the two most common sized handle screws

Hey Dennis. I got a Penn 60 Long Beach off eBay. It's in great shape but the darn free spool release spring hits the top of the inside side plate. It's correctly installed. Could it be the wrong part they put in or maybe it's out of shape? Everything looks right, it goes into the rotating piece nicely. Very confusing but maybe you've seen it. It's as though the piece is just too long.
@2ndChanceTackle18 күн бұрын
The spring was likely replaced with one from another reel, like a Jigmaster. Those springs are longer. You can fix the issue by removing the sling and trimming off a short section from the tag side. Maybe 1/16th of an inch. Reinstalling it should give it the right throw without hitting the inner walll - Dennis

@2ndChanceTackle thanks Dennis, you were correct it's definitely the wrong piece. Not the only wrong piece actually the lever was also off. I just ordered all new eccentric parts and a new jack just in case it messed that up as they work together. Cost about $14 but I only paid $16 for the reel and the chrome parts and metal spool are flawless so it's going to look good! I sold my 65 that had some corrosion on the chrome for $22 in an eBay auction so for $8 I got a better looking one for my collection. I know it doesn't make sense to spend money to make a collection piece function but I like them to work in case someone is interested in them at my house.

I never shy away from keeping a "collector's" piece serviced. There comes a time to take the reel off of the shelf and let it go fishing! Thanks

@@2ndChanceTackle I'm on the same page. I don't fish all my vintage reels like a Senator 6/0 or Penn 49 but the smaller ones I do get the itch to fish every so often! Like a nut I then break them completely down and make sure corrosion doesn't have a chance to start as I'm only fishing the salt.

Good ole Penn , probably last a lifetime if you take care of it .😅

I agree! This one has been around for 60 years and shows no signs of aging!
