This is one of the finest reels ever made! I’ve never heard anything but praise for these reels. I did find out the one of the old Penn greenie ball bearings works perfectly in this reel. You cannot beat one of these old Shakespeare worm gear reels. I have three of them! Great video of a truly great reel!!! Thanks Dennis!

I have been using my Shakespear 2062 reel since 1966. That center nut is 1/2" wrench size. This was built before metrification set in. I have had friends talk me into getting those skirted type fishing reels. They never lasted more than 4 or 5 fishing trips. The quality was never there. I have yet to find a reel with a smoother drag. I have never lost a fish because of snappy drag.

This and the Penn 712 are my two favorite reels. I have way too many 2062s but right now they are inexpensive on Ebay and built to last also have three unused in the box. Great reels from a great era.( hint: the main bearing on a penn 712,704 and 710 are exact matches to the main bearing on the 2062) Thanks Dennis!!

I couldn't remember which Penn bearing worked but i put one in a 2062 and it made the reel even smoother. Fantastic fishing reel in all aspects. I've even done light surf fishing with one of my 2062s.

Hi Mike! I think it was you who told me about putting a Penn bearing in the 2062. I did it and it works perfectly! Hope you are doing well and keeping safe. I'm here at the beach laying on a heating pad on the couch with a kidney stone. Have way too much pain to fish. It is also extremely hot for fishing here at Kure Beach, NC. Heat index is over 100 degrees with no wind.
@mikemcelveen29734 жыл бұрын
@@christopherjenkins2373 sorry to hear that I've heard that kidney stones are extremely painful. Haven't tried the surf with a 2062 yet but might give it a try. I'm in Columbia SC. Just a short hop to the coast. Be safe.

Mike Mcelveen I’ve had hundreds of kidney stones since I was 19. Everyone has something that challenges the hope for a normal life. I have several of those challenges but I have a lot more to be grateful for than not. Didn’t realize we lived so close as I live in the Raleigh area of NC. Used to go sailing in Charleston. If it doesn’t get stormy I might wet a hook again tonight. I brought three of my big Mitchells to the beach - 396 PUM, 496, and 488. Weather says remnants of Laura as well as a cool front will push through late today. You should try the 2062 in the surf sometime. It worked great for me. I have a 2080 Sea Wonder Shakespeare that is great in the surf. It is like a large 2062!

Those are hard to break! I just did one that was frozen with old grease and it went right back to being a top performer! Nice, well made reels - Dennis

I always thought mitchell 300 50s to 60s Era reels were the best.. I just picked up some Mitchell's today as well as one of these (except handle isn't black it's steel color and thinner) the shakesspeare 2062 is smoother then a mitchell, quieter and the gearing is less complicated.. I have to say, I think it's becoming my most favorite reel... it's just fantastic. Thanks for this video!
@2ndChanceTackle2 жыл бұрын
The are both nice examples of fine engineering and you can't go wrong with either. If I had to choose, and I don't, I would pick that Shakespeare. Thanks - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle I feel like the Americans took the mitchell and refined it. I bought an old penn 740z surf reel. It has the same internal parts basically. Still rolling strong. In fact that design was so good they started manufacturing it again because of demand.. that internal hardware is just fantastic

Hi Dennis, I purchased a 2062 yesterday from ebay. This video will come in handy when I get the reel. I'm a big fan of Penn Greenies and Z series and this reel closely resembles both. Had to have it. Thanks for the video.

You are welcome. I think you will find that the 2062 is on par with the Penn 700 series. Best wishes - Dennis

The first spinning, reel I bought was in 1971. It was a Shakespeare 2200 ultralight. It wasn't an expensive reel, but it was very well made. The reel foot says it was made in Japan which at the time was putting out some decent reels. The 2062 was a predecessor to the 2200. I would suppose it was most likely made in the mid to late 1960s. Those old reels were built to last. I still use my 2200 even though it's over fifty years old. It still works like new.

My Father who passed away 35 years ago had 2 of these reels I found them in a box at my moms house a few years ago and leaped them the are still working , thanks to your video I can use TV them again. I wonder Why do you prefer them over the old Penn? I have been using a 704z for surf, pier, jetty for over 25 years and never had any issues with them.
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
I like the design and the reliability of these. Noting against the Penn greenies. They are nice reels as well. You can't go wrong with either, but more parts are available for the Penn Reels than for the Shakespeare, so if you are apt to break things.... Dennis

Nice video. I have my fathers old gear and have a 2062 in great condition. I want to pair it with an old 6ft. Johnny Walker SR60, wood handle off shore rod. Just for local lake fishing though. Would that combination make any sense? Also what line would you recommend? Thanks.
@2ndChanceTackle Жыл бұрын
I'm not familiar with he rod, but a 6 foot rod would be fine for that reel.I like the idea of matching the reel to a period correct rod. Shakespeare made a Wondered at 6 feet length that may be a nice pairing to consider - Dennis

These Royal Maroons are my favorite Shakespeares, the little 2052, this 2062, the larger 2071, even bigger 2081, and the huge 2091. And yes, they are up there in quality with the Penn 712, but just a wee bit lighter. KZbinr Richard Gene the Fishing Machine uses these 2062 with 15 lb. mono and drags in some huge blue and flathead catfish from the Tennessee River. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4mQkp-qltGYb8k
