Abumatic 170 closed face bait casting fishing reel how to take apart and service

When I was young growing up the 170 and Zebco 33 were the 2 reels I owned. I was lucky enough to have a St. Croix casting rod also.

Wow I have one of those. I’m pretty sure I’ve had it for about 50 years now. I oiled it put on some line and took it bass fishing this past summer. It still works like it did when I was young.... thanks Dennis. Be safe. Ron

I have never owned or fished with a reel like this. I think as a child my first reel was a Zebco 202. I hated it as I wanted a Mitchell 300. We didn’t have the money for a reel like that back then. I’ve seen that OC reel you’re talking about. This is a very interesting reel great for bluegill and small bass, etc. Great video Dennis!

I have some Johnson models that have a drag setup that is similar to the Abu 170,it works well once you get used to it.

What a great detailed video! I am dusting off my original fishing gear and have this reel on a rod. I am having trouble finding out the proper way to set the drag for this, can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

This reel has the star adjuster by the handle. I think you would turn it clockwise to tighten the drag and counterclockwise to loosen its but it may be the opposite as the reel is normally fished facing up. - Dennis

Here is how to do it from the reel manual D. HOW TO FILL THE SPOOL WITH LINE Abumatic® spincast reels are designed for use with monofilament and braided lines. Personal preference and fishing conditions will determine proper line selection. Begin by attaching the reel to the rod. Remove the spool cover of the reel by rotating it counterclockwise (left). Pass the line from the filler spool through the opening in the spool cover. Attach the line to the reel spool using an arbor knot. Line should feed on the reel spool in the same direction as it is wound on the filler spool to reduce line twist. Reinstall the front cover on the reel by rotating it clockwise. Fill the spool according to capacity specifications. Do not overfill. I have one of those and I can't seem to get the handle and drag to work right. The drag will barely turn and when it does it is either full drag or no drag. I just can't seem to get it figured out

Do you have the spring and washer assembly inside the handle cap? That provides the tensioning. I don't think I showed that on the video, but it is under the handle screw and nestled in the cup of the star adjuster assembly. If the is correct, then the problem could be with a stuck drag washer - Dennis

They were designed before braid, so I am not sure if the braid would slip on this one. That spool is pretty slick. If you try braid, back it with mono - Dennis

Never seen a closed reel that big. Honestly don't see any closed face reels sold individually. They are always cheap combos. Also for the spool replacement. Maybe someone can 3D print one for you.
