Very informative. One note, unless they switched production mid generation the ones I have from this generation still have the made in sweden stamped into the metal just like the ones I have from 1 and 2 generations prior to this one.

Dennis, I have this reel in the 6601 version. The drag system does appear to adjust loose to tight in pulling line off of the spool from the star drag assembly adjuster. There is a lot of play in the reel handle shaft assembly. I have not taken it apart, but when you pull the line off of the reel, the reel handle spins backwards. What do you anticipate the issues are? I am not familiar on the names of the parts. Great video, thank you for posting it.
@2ndChanceTackle2 жыл бұрын
The reel handle turning backwards is a problem in the anti-reverse system. The loose handle shaft play is possible a missing "E" clip that holds the gear sleeve on to the shaft - Thanks for asking - Dennis

hey Dennis .. I was wondering if you ever changed the plastic pawl gear on the far side from the handle … there is a big plastic gear and then a little gear … mine little gear is broken .. just wondering how to remove the little gear .. thank you for any reply ..
@2ndChanceTackle5 жыл бұрын
Sure - these need to be changed all the time! The gear is called the idler gear and the big and small are on the same piece. Most of the time these either sit on a post and are held be a, "E" clip, or are held be a screw. Some just float on a post and are held by the case. Check for the schematic at www.abugarcia.com/AbuGarcia-reel-schematics.html and determine which one you have. You then remover the side plate and either pull the clip or screw of just the gear and replace. - Thanks for asking - Dennis

Thanks for your reply Dennis. I really like watching your videos. I have a bunch of old reels in the garage that were my Dads and some that were mine when I was a kid. Am having lots of fun bringing them back to life. I found a Heddon 295 reel in the garage and am restoring it per your Heddon video. The drag washers are in bad shape. Is there a modern replacement for them? I cant find much information on that reel on the web. Thanks LLoyd

Thanks Lloyd. I am not aware of any new old stock washers for these, but if you contact Smoothdrag.com, they may be able to match the ones you have. You are going to need the inside and outside diameter measurements for them prior to the call - Dennis

I just took my 6600 apart and cleaned it but once I put it back together its very stiff. I removed the side plate and took the spool put and its smooth,but when I set the spool back in its very stiff again. Do you know what might be causing this or what I might be doing wrong?
@2ndChanceTackle3 жыл бұрын
There are two likely causes. One is that the spool adjuster is too tight. If you added grease to each side then you need to back off the spool adjuster a little and grease would be taking up the slack. Try that first. The other cause may be that the spool brakes are not inside the ring on the backplate. Make sure you put the spool brakes in towards the spool shaft before putting the side plate on. - I hope that helps Dennis
@thelowmein91435 жыл бұрын
When you say fabric washer, is that a carbon fiber washer? Also on this reel, it has the 6 pin centrifugal brake on the spool correct? Is that supposed to be user adjustable? Or is meant to work on its own? I’m familiar with the system but this one seems hard to access. Are you supposed to set it once and forget it?
@2ndChanceTackle5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I mean the carbon fiber washer. The centrifugal brake pins are adjusted by removing the pads. The less pads, the freer that it spins. You need to remove the side plate to get to them. They are on the spool.

Thanks for the great video Dennis. I feel confident repairing my C4 now. I need a new drive shaft as it has been stripped out from over tightening the nut. Can you tell me where the best place to order parts from? It appears Abu Garcia is closed due to Covid19...Waited two hours on hold and my email bounced back due to "full inbox" so they must not be in the office. THanks!

You should be able to get most of the parts through ereplacementparts.com Just make sure you put your model number in the search bar or you will get 1000's of parts returned. Try limiting it ti ambassador 6400 to start. That should bring up a parts diagram and then you can see the parts available - Dennis

Dennis you dont service the level wind mechanism at all? I use mine in saltwater, what should i do? Oil or grease?
@2ndChanceTackle5 жыл бұрын
The level wind worm gear gets oil. Grease will trap dirt, micro-grain sand and dried salt. I generally remove the pawl and pawl carried, clean the pawl and put a drop of oil in the carrier before I reinstall. If I missed that in this video, it was an oversight. Thank you - Dennis

@azman47493 жыл бұрын
@@scottcole5822 you should remove the worm gear shaft after you remove the screw that protect pawl. Clean with lighter fluid or petrol. Check the pawl whether it is still in good condition. Use light oil after you put together the level wind assembly

Thanks for the video, much appreciated! I lost the C Lock and they are no longer available thru Abu Garcia or either of their online parts stores. Do you know what size it is? And where a person might find one? Thanks
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
Doug - I don't know the size, but I have had luck getting the "E" clips from a local hardware store. They are not exact matches, but as long as the interior ring locks, you can always put the handle nut on before the clip. You can also find assortment packs on Ebay by searching E Clips. If you buy the metric assortment, you should be able to get one that fits. Of course, you will have a whole lot more than you need, but it should help you put the reel back together - Dennis

"Made in Sweden" is stamped into the cank end shell. The level wind guide is NOT plastic. You can also see evidence of a Abu Sweden model/revisuion/mfg darte code on the underneath of the mounting feet. Pretty unlikely that this reel was made in Asia.

I thought the carbon fibre washers didn't require lubrication.
@2ndChanceTackle2 жыл бұрын
They don't - The manufacturer says you can run them dry, or you can use a light coat of grease that is toweled off. You should not use any more as the material does not absorb grease and the more you add, the less grip more slip you have as a result - Dennis

Dennis as usual you bailed me out again. I have a problem with a similar reel. 6500C4, the gear on the end of spool axle seems to be loose allowing gear to strip so that the gear doesn’t drive level wind. The side plate gears seem ok?

That's a Swedish made reel. Most Ambassadeurs still are. The S series and the B series are Chinese. I think all 7000's are either assembled in China or have parts made in China. The 7000 series still have the excellent quality. The S and B series 5000 and 6000's don't though.

This is an enduring design and for the most part, still a dependable and durable reel, regardless of where they are put together. The biggest complaint I get is on the handle and star drag adjuster nut. The newer ones are aluminum or other soft metal and they bend easily. I would like to see those redesigned.
