They are just bigger. The design is similar to more modern narrow profile lever drags like the ones that Avet and Accurate make

You'd think that a reel that size would just be a collection of magnified parts of any other reel -- giant spool, handle, gears, frame. But nope, itty bitty screws. Amazing.

Hello Dennis! You have to be careful with the older International 80 series reels, as the drag material contained asbestos. That reel looked remarkably good inside with no visible corrosion. Grease is your friend. Replacing both inner and outer plates drag plates is a bit pricey, at close to $120 for the pair. At one time you could purchase just the drag material, but has been discontinued by Penn. I hate the clicker sound, so I remove the stud and shorten it so it barely makes contact when engaged, otherwise it's church mouse quiet. As for the spool preset, depending on the lure you're trolling, you need to change the drag set anyway. Troll with a #6 or #8 planner and you'll tighten the drag down to close to 20 pounds.

The differences are in gear speed and line capacity. The 30 is around 3.1:1 and the 80 is around 2.5:1. The line capacities vary but if both are W models, they. are similar in that area
