I, generally, use a ratcheting, interchangeable regular-sized screwdriver for the initial loosening of screws. Here's a link to the brand I use:

Get some additional, varying sizes Flathead and Phillips bits while you're at it.
The adjustable wrenches I use (instead of hex nut wrenches) are Husky, but these (with the red insert) work very well... 6-inch will be used the most:

If you prefer to use hex nut wrenches, I'd recommend angled/offset ones, like these:

I have an offshore tuna trip in a week aboard the Capt. Lou Fleets Beast of a boat the Atlantic Pearl out of Freeport, Long Island. Going over my gear I noticed my 50 SW would not switch gears. With NO time to get it repaired and serviced locally I figured I'd give it a try with the help of your AMAZING video. MISSION COMPLETED. The reel works beautifully. I would never had attempted this without your help. Thank you ... Tight Lines. 😎👍👌

was just working on an older gen 50sw and you have to remove the bottom plate off the gears and fully remove the gear sleeve to get the gears out since they sit in a recess, its a balancing act to get all the parts back in without the little slide pins falling out. but like your nice clear vid. thanks

@@TSGReelService Thankyou. I just finished tearing apart 2 STW. They are just like your video fortunately. I have one more that has some of the side plate screws are stuck. I actually broke off two screw extractors in 2 of the screw heads. I Don’t know how I’ll get them apart now. The screw extractors metal is super hard. Drill bit just slides on it. But Thankyou for the video. It helped a ton in my tear down and service
@TSGReelService
@TSGReelService Жыл бұрын
Good to hear. This might help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIWsfIimp7JkpsU If not, you can grind off the tops of the screws (with a Dremel or by using larger and larger drill bits) and pry the side plate off after removing the other screws.... then soaking the stuck screws with something like WD-40, and using a vise grip in the section of the screw that remains to gently back the screw out without snapping it off.... usually, the screws are frozen inside the side plates (as seen in the video above), and not in the frame.

Be careful with how much grease you add to the screw holes. This can cause hydraulic pressure to build up and crack the parts at the screw holes.
@TSGReelService
@TSGReelService 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I'm not much of a technical person. Although I can agree with the theory, a screw is not like a piston with a seal, blocking the release of excess grease. I think it's more likely any excess will work its way up the threads and out the hole. Which reels has that happened to you on?
@FTECBLReports
@FTECBLReports 3 жыл бұрын
@@TSGReelService Thankfully this has never happened to me because I apply just a small amount of grease to the threads of the screws and not actually into the holes. But I have seen it happen to a few guys before. Usually not on a machined reel like the internationals since they are machined from a solid billet. Its far more prone to happening on cast reels like Lexa's, Fathoms, Curados. The grease is thick, it does not get squeezed up and out between the threads. It actually gets pushed to the bottom of the tapped hole and then starts to build the pressure that can result in a blow out. If you have ever seen a clutch replaced on a car there was an old shadetree trick to getting the pilot bearing/bushing out of the end of the crank shaft. Pack the crackshaft end with grease, stick a socket that just barely fit into the hole and hit it with a hammer. This built up hydraulic pressure and pushed the bearing/bushing out. Its the same concept with the grease and screw in a fishing reel. Everything else you do is great. I have watched several of your videos. Its always good to watch other people who perform the same kind of work as you to pick up new ideas, new ways of doing things, easier ways of completing a task. Maybe one day Ill start making videos also hahaha. Anyway good job and thanks for putting these videos out there bud!
@TSGReelService
@TSGReelService 3 жыл бұрын
No worries. Thanks for checking out the videos. It already seemed you had some experience with servicing reels.... which is the reason I responded as I did.... thought maybe you have had it happen to you. Like you, I'm always learning new things/techniques. Either we grow or die, right? Regarding the hydraulic pressure concept, I understand how it works and agree with you, to an extent. However, the amount of grease that gets "trapped" at the end is negligible, and I respectfully disagree that some of the grease (equivalent to equalizing any built up positive pressure) works its way up the threads, pushing the "last in" grease up and away... there's no sudden or quick force (like a hammer) to magnify the pressure... it's being screwed in.... and I would posit that "slow" process gives the pressure, if any, time to equalize. It's never happened to me either, but I'll have a clue as to why if it ever does. Thanks again for your input. Feel free to critique/praise/suggest as you see fit. I'm always open to trying new things. Til the next video....
