thanks for sharing on how to service these reels; gave me confidence to service my reels, only question i have, after servicing how can i get the clicking noise when reeling? mine stop doing after service.
@2ndChanceTackle2 жыл бұрын
Which clicking noise? There are two - one is the Anti-reverse dog hitting the ratchet and the other is the spool clicker. If you are asking about the A/R dog, chances are you have grease on the dog or ratchet and that is muting the sound. That does not affect the reel operation as long as the dog is holding. If you want more of that noise, you can take the reel apart again and dry the pieces, but it is not necessary and some folks prefer the quiet click - Dennis
@jeimergonzalez84062 жыл бұрын
thanks you dennis. I probably did applied grease to the anti- reverse dog, but it does engage. i'll leave it how it is. first time getting familiar with service, took me a couple of hours.

I bought a matching pair if 309s on full roller rods with wire line on them. I think they was being used as trolling rod around the Great Lakes. I am thinking about upgrading the drags to HT-100s but would it hurt to grease these drags. My grandson and I have about 45 Penns now and this is the first of the hard washers I have found. Keep up the great videos.
@2ndChanceTackle3 жыл бұрын
Those hard washers weren't around too long. A light coat of grease, wiped dry, it about all you can do there and all you need to do. The HT-100 are a good upgrade - Dennis

I appreciate your videos. I have torn mine apart twice, but I still have to crank down on the drag in order to get my line guide going. Have you ever heard of this happening?
@2ndChanceTackle3 жыл бұрын
Your line guide is driven by the spool, so the drag will be needed ignorer to turn the spool to turn the line guide. Some reels drive the worm gear from the main gear side and that makes it easier to turn will out the drags clamped down all the way - It doesn't sound like it is a problem with this reel - Dennis

Awesome video! Do you know what years Penn made the peer? Thanks
@2ndChanceTackle2 жыл бұрын
The earliest Peer models were made in the 1940's and 50's. The US made ones were discontinued in the early 2000s when production moved to China. There are still a few models made in China today. - Dennis

if level line gear goes bad is it hard to replace
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
The gear is on the non-handle side and held in with a single screw, so that part is easy once you remove the side plate. Reassembling the reel is always a balancing act. If you watch how I load the worm gear in this video, you will see the reassembly process. Dennis

Hi Dennis, I have a burgandy Penn Peer 309 that I have had since the mid 1970's. Is there a serial number or someway tp tell how old it is?
@2ndChanceTackle3 жыл бұрын
No, these were not serialized . The first of these 309s were made in 1966 and are still in manufacture today. - Thanks for asking - Dennis

I have two, they seem to have been common salmon reels here in the Pacific Northwest.
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
They are basically a Penn JigMaster with a level wind feature. They share main gears, drags and other parts. It is easy to see why they were popular for Salmon - Dennis

These and the 209 were common on the great lakes for salmon and steelhead.

I’ve got a question My levelwind thing that’s moves to evenly distributes the line when you reel it’s not moving with the handle I’m trying greese as we speak so do you have any recommendations?
@2ndChanceTackle2 жыл бұрын
The problem is likely to be a broken idler gear or a bad line guide pawl. Those parts are available through Mysticparts.com an authorized distributor of Penn Parts - Dennis

Is there any truth to mono line is bad for the vintage 209 the hype is it will brake the spool I have one in mint condition and want to spoil 25 # mono
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
When mono first came out, it put a lot of pressure on the sides of the spool versus the linen linen that was used previously and that could cause the spool to warp. Penn suggested removing the mono and re-spooling to relieve the pressures of overtightened line that was binding. I have seen my share of warped spools over time, but not enough that I would say to avoid the mono. Also, todays line is much different that the earlier products. Don't worry it - Dennis

I completely tore apart everything on this reel numerous times cuz I couldn't get it working right because of that stupid worm gear not being set right.. 🤣 I'm not a fan of working on level winds 😅
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
They are not as easy as the others, but I find that the assembly goes easier if you do not install the worm gear and line guide until after you have the frame together. I show how to do that in the video. Thanks for the note - Dennis
