Every time I see you o this it is extraordinary. The only way someone can do this is experience and familiarity with the reel. I have neither of those skills with conventional reels. I’m getting there with vintage spinning reels though. I still occasionally get stumped though. That J C Higgins / Bretton PUM reel I told you about is one of those that stumped me. I still managed to disassemble and service it but I already knew enough to steer clear of the ball bearings on a Bretton reel. They are treacherous to say the least. I’m looking forward to working on that very old Airex Beachcomber reel that will arrive this week. I’ll also get the matching bailed Bretton 902. I’ll be careful with that one for the same reason. I love watching you assemble these conventional reels. I so much wish I could use them. This is another great video Dennis!

This reel is very popular even now. I see these being used in a lot of places. From catfish in rivers to striped bass in the Chesapeake Bay, to bottom fishing, this seems to be a very popular reel. I'm not at all a fan of level wind reels but I see it a lot.

This was a nice smaller format for the Penn Reels. You are correct, they are still well liked and sought after...and parts are still available too - Thanks - Dennis

Hey Dennis , your videos are always a great help . Thanks alot !! Maybe you can help me out a bit more . For some reason the spool on my N.9 keeps getting stuck. As it turns ,the spool wedges to the inside of the right plate. I already tried loosing and tightening the tension screw. Any advice? . Plz and thank you.

Have you had the reel apart? This sounds like it could be broken line inside the reel. If it is not the line, then the next try would be to remove the line guide pawl and test the reel without the level wind feature to make sure it is not the pawl that is hindering performance. Still not that? the other two items would be a bad right side bearing or a spool that is out of round - bent shaft. - Dennis

I use to have this reel. Used it on piers to drift fish small live bait (7 inch max) on a Carolina rig with up to a 6 oz sinker. Main target was halibut around the 10-15lb range. But the biggest fish was a shovel nose skate that must have weighed at least 30lb. Honestly I hated the levelwind system on this penn. It would pop out the track often. Off topic. Dennis you really under sale how expensive really good chrome plating cost nowadays. My dad & brother (plus their friends) all buy and enjoy restoring classic cars. Re-chroming even a bumper can get pricey. The older guys tell chrome use to cost a lot originally then got cheap, now it's getting a little expensive again. Guess everything is a cycle

I guess it must do with the cost of the material, but yes, chrome plating can get expensive. I prefer to leave the reel in as-is condition and let the wear tell the story. Best wishes - Dennis

If I want to eliminate the level wind on my penn no 9. Should I seal the holes in the side plates?
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
That would be best as water will get inside and foul the greases and oils. - Dennis
