Might be a silly question, but I am after some guidance on the Genuine Parts list you have supplied. I am thinking about using all genuine Toyota parts instead of the TT kit. Are all of the parts in that Genuine Toyota parts list in your description, everything I will need? Or are there other parts I will need that are not mentioned? Thank you
@2ndGearLow5 ай бұрын
Hi Kempy, yes; you will need everything from both lists below (included and not included with the kit). There are some parts which some people will re-use, such as come washers, washers and nuts for the drive flanges. Suggest watching this entire video to understand where each of the parts are used. If you are buying all of these genuine parts in Australia, I suggest checking out partsouq.com - they often have more stock and it works out cheaper even after international shipping in a lot of cases vs buying from Toyota Australia. Partsouq also allows you to enter your VIN and see exploded diagrams with all genuine part numbers - that's what we use to find all the part numbers

I have seen a few that greese the felt before they put it on.....is that true??? Anyone???
@2ndGearLow Жыл бұрын
Hi Chronoboat, we have also seen others do this, but we do not grease the felt dust seal and it is not listed as a step in the FSM. Please be mindful that this felt dust seal is in direct contact with the rubber seal, and some greases will cause rubber to degrade when in contact, which should be considered if you choose to grease the felts.

Hi Sean, thanks for watching. The Permatex isn't absolutely necessary, you can certainly just use the OEM gasket by itself, but if you are going to use Permatex it should be applied to the gasket faces immediately before assembly

what’s the spring tension gauge used for?
@2ndGearLow Жыл бұрын
Hi Thomas, the spring tension gauge is used to check bearing preload setting, for both the wheel bearings and knuckle bearings. It's important when using it to pull in the correct direction, as the force on the gauge is being used to calculate a torque to start turning the bearing

Is there a reason everybody greases the spindle surfaces on which the bearings “rotate” (bearing obvs. Rotate on the rollers inside)? I would have thought that surface needs to stay dry, to prevent bearing spin. and scoring of the spindle. My spindles are both scored beyond belief and had plenty grease between inner races and the spindle.
@2ndGearLow2 жыл бұрын
Hi Felix, thanks for commenting. That's unfortunate, do you know if the spindle was scored from earlier? Hard to be sure but it sounds like a bearing may have seized previously, possibly due to insufficient grease in the rollers themselves and has spun on the spindle. Under load, the rollers should turn within the inner and outer races as you suggest, i.e. no motion between the inner race and the spindle itself. As this is inside the hub (packed with grease) there would be no avoiding getting some grease between the inner race and the spindle on installation, but this grease on the spindle helps the bearing slide on and seat fully if nothing else.

Can I ask some advice. I just done my hubs using ur vid. Thank U. Lol. But now after I put the caliper back on the the wheel is hard to spin wheel. I cleaned up caliper but still same issue.any ideas on what's going on?
@2ndGearLow8 ай бұрын
Hi Noeleen, thanks for watching. Is the wheel only difficult to spin when the brake caliper is back on? If difficult to spin with the brake caliper off this could be an issue with the wheel bearings. If it's only when the brake caliper is on, it sounds like the pads are contacting the disc rotor making it hard to spin the wheel. You can manually retract the caliper pistons (easier to do with the caliper removed), for example using an F-clamp, which will back the brake pads away from the disc rotor. You can then check if the wheels spins normally with the caliper reinstated and the pads not contacting the disc. Best to check the level of the brake fluid reservoir (near the back of the engine bay) to ensure it doesn't overflow, as the fluid level will rise slightly when you retract the caliper pistons to increase the gap between the brake pads

Like the use of a torque wrench. Soak the felts in oil overnight, they will seal better. Terrain tammer sell a double lip seal for the rear bearing on rotor bearing, much better. Also inner axle seal, there is an aftermarket one which covers the raised part of the axle, it wont grove the axle and is reussble, and does not fail. The 6ft lb setting on the 10 mm bolts is enough, as designed by toyota. I noticed when you used the bsll joint spilter. That it broke the rubber boot on the ball joint and grease oozed out. Should have replaced them if unable to regrease them.
@2ndGearLow2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Stuart, appreciate you watching and some good tips here. There are certainly lots of aftermarket / upgraded options out there for these oil seals. Agree on the 6 lb-ft setting being enough on the 10mm wiper bolts, we just chose to snug these rather than use the torque wrench as they're not as critical. Nice spot on the ball joint - we're planning on doing a tie-rod replacement video in the future.

Hey fellas, just revisiting this comment, I have just changed out my axles and cv joints, but I'm finding even with a puller bolt the axle will not protrude far enough out to get the circlip back on. It's doing head in arrrrgh 😂. Swivel hits and bearings were heaps quicker this time round though. If you have any idea how to get the axle spline out that little bit more can you let me know. Cheers

Great vid!! 👍👍 Could you add the max torque setting to the torque wrench section of the description, please? It would help others, too

Thanks mate, appreciate the feedback. I like that idea, giving the upper and lower ends of the torque range needed!

Good tip for cleaning the grease out of the knuckle and axle housing.......toilet paper. Less expensive than paper towels, and absorbs quite a lot of goo. I keep a roll handy when doing knuckles. ;-)

Superb, clear and easy to follow, the best tutorial for this job I have ever seen. My 80 has factory fit locking diffs - shouldn't they be locked before starting this job?

Hi mate is it the same torque specs on 98 model 75 series
@2ndGearLow Жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, I suspect it would be very similar, however would recommend you get your hands on a copy of the FSM for the 75 as it's a different suspension set up and the kit listed is different to that shown here, SH4WB

Do you have any advice on how to remove the spindle bearing upgrade? I've managed to punch out the brass cap and the top lip on the bearing race inaccessible using a punch/drift. Bottom lip is now punch outwards.... Excellent video, love how you detail all the tools required.

Hiya mate, for the bearings in the knuckle, I see you are using the same moly grease that is getting packed for the knuckle. The FSM says you need Wheel Bearing Grease. Shouldn't you be using the same red grease that you put on the wheel bearings for the knuckle bearings? I'm a bit confused.

I note that you do not initially lubricate the wiper seal. Also worth mentioning - if you do not put enough grease in the CV joint and its cavity, what can happen is that the centrifugal force will ensure the CV joint ends up running dry of lubricant. This happened to my 80 series and the CV joints had to be replaced. Interesting that you can also put in too much. Fantastic video, thankyou.
