True story: In 1990, nearly 400 girls younger than 15 had children in New York City. Another 675 had abortions. But one pregnancy, in particular, garnered national headlines. On March 27, 1991, a 12 year old gave birth to a baby boy in the Noble Drew Ali Plaza, a 385-family, privately owned, federally subsidized project in Brownsvill

It is loosely based on a true story. "Brenda" and her cousin are real, her throwing away the baby was real too. The rest of it is all fiction. "Brenda"s name was never released to the public, she was sent into foster care and her drug dealing/prosti /death is completely made up for the song. The part about her living with her mom and dad? Also fiction. She lived with her mom and grandma with 2 siblings until a gas leak in the apt killed all of them except "Brenda" who then went to live at her aunt's house.

Yep it is one of those songs. A definitive Tupac song. While he was popular before this song, I do feel like this song propelled him to superstar status. It's not supposed to be easy to hear, but it's the truth of what goes on sometimes in the ghetto and in less privliged areas around the world. It's not only the story of "Brenda" but of a lot more people than we'd think who can't make ends meet, who end up having kids. Life isn't fair a lot of the time, and it's sad, and that's what this song portrays so well.

The song is very true to life. It tells a tale of tragedy, ends abruptly, no ceremony, no looking deeper, and life goes on. It is sad to say it like that, but that is what makes the story that much more deeper. Why is there no outrage? Why no looking further into how this could happen? Why is nothing done to make sure this story doesn't happen to someone else? .......we just move on......

I’ve seen your reaction to this before and I just wanted to give you some answers to your questions about it. In an interview Tupac said it was a true story that he saw in the news paper but it wasn’t getting talked about so he made a song about it. He also said there’s a million Brenda’s out there getting abused and coming from dysfunctional homes but nobody talks about it or even cares . That’s where the back story to this song came from. Trying to open our eyes to what’s going on in the lower black community .
