I had a friend who was mostly into country and thought Pac was just another gangster rapper. So I played her the first verse of Keep Ya Head Up and watched her eyes get wide... Nobody was talking about women's issues like he was. At least, nobody on his level of magnitude. And yes, he would sometimes talk about bitches and hoes, but he also made a point that he was literally talking about "bitches". And "hoes". He was like "go out on the street and ask any woman if they know any bitches or hoes. That's who I'm talking about. Not women." Which is fair enough.

"In love with a molester who's sexin' her crazy." I have mad love for this line. The whole song is real, don't get me wrong...but this in particular is something that a lot of artists don't do. He sugarcoated nothing. These words stung like nothing else I've ever felt and maybe that's because I've been a victim of similar circumstances, but also because he made no effort to make this easier for anyone to handle hearing. No mercy for the sake of mercy. That's truly beautiful. "Well let me show you how it affects our whole community." This is another line that I found I admired quite a lot. People very rarely see beyond self...and because they don't, nothing is changing. People are so consumed with their own existence that nobody is helping anyone...which ultimately results in criminals walking free. Hell, most are even too self absorbed to think that those criminals may target them...or their children... "Just 'cause you're in the ghetto doesn't mean you can't grow." And finally, that last line that stood out to me- the one part of this song that intended to give the listener hope. The single bit of encouragement and positivity he left as part of this piece, to at the very least remind young women like Brenda that there can be a way out. Sometimes people can't rise from the depths without a hand willing to help lift them up... It felt like this was his way of saying "I'll be your voice. You're not fighting this by yourself." Anyways... I just felt like sharing my thoughts...

+D0PAMiiNE True... he spat it like he witnessed it and he probably he did... there were a lot of "Brendas" in the '80s... that kind of story made the news a lot back then... the lines that really raise my brow: "she tried to hide her pregnancy from her family... who really didn't care to see or give a damn if she... went out and had a church of kids... as long as when the check came, they got first dibs" That shit is so fuckin' true and sad... the welfare dependency at the expense of a young girl's health and mental state... smh

One of the most hauntingly beautiful songs that ever graced my ears. I remember when my mom's had this on cassette. I was always musically in tune, I could always understand lyrics. I remember this song sitting me down from my toys and made me listen to the story. When the song was done, I was just silent. I looked over to my mama, she just shook her head and said, “What do you think happened to Brenda?” and I answered, “Dead?” She nodded and flipped the tape. I'll never forget that.

Tupac is a funny thing man. I grew up basically during his heyday. And I've always been a fan since same song from Digital Underground. But back in those days when I was a Youngster I was just bumping it, feeling the music you know? Now I sit there and analyze the lyrics on a deeper level and I'm like man this dude was something else. His message was so evolved and intellectual for the 90s.

Comments are always like "if you listen to this in *insert year here* youre a legend," but this is different because you acknowledge it ain't just about the music its about the message. Songs like this, Changes, and Ghetto Gospel to name a few still play like they were written yesterday because pac knew if we didnt make that change ourselves they wouldnt come now 25 years later were still waiting for those changes. He sang about how we gotta love life not take it. He said what we needed not what we wanted so we ignored him. Man was a preacher in the streets and no one listened.
