Now, I have all my favorite music right here on KZbin!! Rock on!!!!!

Oversimplified version of symphonic metal origins is that it was pioneered by Therion, was effectively defined by Nightwish and Within Temptation, with After Forever and Epica close behind. For symphonic black metal, Dimmu Borgir probably define the genre, not sure if they were the first.

To add to this. Therion started as black metal band that was inspired by Celtic Frost who influenced extreme metal heavily. Therion than switched to symphonic metal (the song To Mega Therion is the best example of this, incredible song) and invented the whole genre. Nightiwsh popularised the genre and set the basic rules.

@@Kie75 S&M was in 1999, after Therion, Theatre of Tragedy, Dimmu Borgir, Nightwish, Within Temptation, After Forever were already on the scene defining the genre. For all we know, the influence, if any, was in reverse. Symphonic metal is generally defined as combination of classical music with black, death, gothic, or power metal, so I personally would not draw too direct a line from Queen either.

The combination of orchestra and contemporary 'rock' instruments (not metal) goes even further back. All the way to the 1970s. Jon Lord (Deep Purple) made his album Sarabande in 1974. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXu9hIyqZs2DnK8

One unexpected figure early in symphonic metal was Christopher Lee. That is the actor, Dracula, Saruman, etc. He was a big metal fan and released his own album at age 80, and since he almost became an opera singer when younger it was symphonic metal. He released 4 metal albums in total.

Symphonic metal started as far back as the 80’s when bands like Savatage , inspired by bands of the late 60’s and 70’s, started branching out from the standard metal formula. Some bands like the Scorpions and Metallica created albums where they played their music in concert with a symphony orchestra but few made it their bread and butter. The earliest band I know of doing this was Savatage who later became Trans Siberian Orchestra. Savatage created on one song based on the Christmas song, Carole of the Bells, called Dead Winter Dead. The song was the last song from the album Dead Winter Dead which was a theme album of two lovers from opposing sides of the war between Serbia and Croatia. In that song a cellist swore to play in the town square every night until to fighting stopped. The two lovers of the story decided to flee the country found the cellist dead at the site of their planned rendezvous. It was a rather sad ending. In the States, we hear Christmas in Sarajevo every year during the holiday season.

Honestly, so many of the musicians have had classical training before that it's actually easy to catch in their music if one is really paying attention. So bands like Black Sabbath to Metallica you can hear classical structure and playing in their songs. So with that it's not a stretch really to get to symphonic metal. Trans Siberian Orchestra was the first to really be super mainstream. Opeth has been around a LONG time too. Metallica also got in on it with their S&M live album featuring the San Francisco Phil Harmonic Orchestra. 🤘🤘

Hi ladies, Symphonic metal has it's origin in Norther Europe. Nightwish from Finland is very big, But also Dutch bands as Within Temptation and Epica are world wide famous. Most female lead singers are from the Netherlands, like this singer Floor Jansen, but also Simone from Epica (they studied classical singing together) Sharon from Within Temptation and Anneke...we have so many more female metal front singers in Holland that ae very famous. In the USA it is not really a thing, symphonic metal and the concerts are much smaller than in Europe, South America (people love it there) and Asia. It is not a weird combination, when you realize many metal musciisians have a classical education. I play in a metal band, but did conservaoru (music university) first and started with classical gitar and siging. t is a bery good base to frown further. Epica (holland, with mucisians former band Floor, After Forever) uses orchestra's and choirs a lot during concerts, while the gitarrifs are pretty rough and the drummer is solid on the double base. Tuomas (keyboards and composer from ightwish) also wrote music for the London Philarmonic Orchestra and choirs (also a young boy from the Cambridge choir) He wrote music for every single instruent in the complete orchestra. from strings, trombone, hobo to flute and they use it often recorded in the background (you can't take the London Philarmonic with you on stage everywhere, anytime :D ) There are several numbers from Epica where Floor sings together with the bandsinger Simone. They also sung an opera aria without music during a metal concert and the public was apreciating it a lot. Imagine doing this during a pop or rap concert. Many metal heads also apriciate classical music. Marko retired. He does not play base in another band, because he loves his bandmembers. They are a tigh group of friends. He got tired of the big bosses in the music industry ( there is a lot to do about that, also with many other bands who are fed up with it) and Marko is chronically depressed and was burned out. He is missed by the whole Nightwish army and ofcourse his band. They till have very good and warm contact and e never left the band for good. We will see, I hope he is feeling better at home, with steady routine. Troy (bagpipe, any kind of old instrument, guitar and background vocal) is from Ireland. Floor from Holland and the other guys are Finnish. Floor had more than 6 years of classical training and also finished the rock academy. She can sing full opera, classical, Metal, Rock, she even growls grunts like a man. (yours is an empty hope, about people spending their time on internet to troll around, trying to hurt people)

I'm saying Deep Purple gave birth to the symphonic metal genre... or, at the very least, laid out the path (proof at the end). In 1969, they released _Concerto for Group and Orchestra_ with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. This was an actual rock/orchestral album. Deep Purple is one of the Unholy Trinity, the founders of modern heavy metal, along with Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. Now, if I recall correctly, the Moody Blues also did something early on with an orchestra, but it was just one song. Purple did a whole album and live concert. The more you know about Deep Purple, the more similarities you find with Nightwish. Link to story about history of symphonic metal: www.metalmusicarchives.com/subgenre/symphonic-metal

as a fan of the old school of heavy metal (the late 60s to middle of 70s) and the N.W.O.B.H.M. (1979 to 1985), I could (if you allow me) suggest some bands that didn't get much recognition .......... "TOAD", a Swiss hard rock band, formed by ex-Brainticket members in Basel, Switzerland, in 1970; and "HOOKFOOT" was a British rock band, active from 1969 to 1974. TOAD was a heavy blues/hard rock band with an aggressive live performance on stage, although they never got enough recognition, their sound was rough and hard, very unpolished hard rock n roll, pity they didn't last too long; HOOKFOOT kind of hard rock band, with a lot of funky-blues tendencies, but they were very good, and again, they also had a very short life.; you might find these two bands interesting if you give them a chance; I also could suggest: MCF (Live album) kind of hard rock n roll punk, BLOODROCK (live album 1972) with the song "Breach of Lease" There are so many hard rock/heavy metal bands that are a bit difficult to remember all of them, but those ones I mentioned are kind of not well known by rock fans. and something special as I can see hasn't been mentioned yet, Edgar Winter and his "White Thrash band" with their live performance album "ROADWORKS" (live 1972), there are two songs that really give a good kick to the rock and roll scene; "TOBACCO ROAD" and "BACK IN THE U.S.A." .............give it a try and you will see what I am talking about, Cheers!!!!!!

Always great to see people being blown away by music, especially when a band can do it multiple times when you revisit it! If you want to try yet another countries metal you should try listening to "Tyr - Sinklars Visa" it's also very different and in an old norse language that isn't really spoken anymore

I would personally say they are one of the originators of symphonic metal. Other would be Amorphis, then again they kinda are a blend of everything.

Another great reaction. Using classical elements in rockmusic has quite a long hystory. The crossover was already done, before metal was a word for a certain type of music. The invention of the melotron was important for this kind of music. All of a sudden, keyboardplayers could insert other sounds in the music and put violin sounds in for example. The first group that me comes to mind is Ekseption, who recorded a rock version of (part of) the fith' symphony of Beethoven, simply called The Fith's back in 1969. In the 70's groups as Emerson Lake and Palmer, Yes, Jethro Tull, Genesis (before Phil Collins took over from Peter Gabriel) and Pink Floyd were realy succesful in that crossover between rock and classical compositions. The first band I know who combined a rockgroup and an orchestra were Deep Purple on their album Concerto for Group and Orchestra, 6 month's before they came with their more metalalbum In Rock. With Punk (1977) all this music almost diasappeared. Only Marillion held the classical elements. Off course Rock evolved into Hardrock and into Metal (Steppenwolf's Born to be Wild, was the first song that was called Metal). All these bands were male fronted. They had classical elements in their instrumentation, but not in singing. The Gathering was the first femalefronted group that played metal in the 1990's. So you can say Anneke van Giersbergen must have been the first. But she didn't sing with a classical voice. The first to put a classical voice in metal were Nightwish, with Tarja Turunen as their leadsinger. She left the band in 2005. They were followed by groups as After Forever (with Floor Jansen as their lead), Within Temptation (Sharon den Adel) Epica (Simone Simons) Evenesence (Amy Lee) and many other bands and projects.

3:55 Arguably, Tchaikovsky was first, adding cannons to the drum section - what could be more metal? Combining symphoy with metal has been a gradual emergence, mostly pioneered through classic rock. That said, Epica and Nightwish do pull it off really well!

Europe and Scandinavia in particular have so many different kind of Metal bands compared to USA, I remember Lars Ulrich did an interview, where he said that when he came to America, he believed that there where more variations of Metal in Birmingham (England), than there where in the US at the time.

More Nightwish please. And if you are Marco fans, please consider High Hopes (Marco is the sole vocalist, from around 2007, a Pink Floyd cover that is arguably better than the original) or The Islander from Tempere concert. Both great to showcase Marco.
