I bought exactly that 2U case from inter-tech and I love it! I however installed 6x50mm fans on the front inlet (official only supports 4x50 but you can make space here). That cools my disks and gives sufficient flow to my CPUs heatsink, that has an additional 120mm fan on top. Little remark on your build: Chieftec is considered a low-quality PSU brand. If you like your server, replace it. I recently switched to a passively cooled seasonic prime. That was almost perfect for the power load of my low-power storage server (~70-80 W).

This is an awesome build. I am about to build a very space efficient rack mountable workstation around the 5700G APU in a 2U chassis. It will fit nicely in my rack between my 4U media server and my 2U blue iris server. This will leave enough room for my UPS and my surround sound head unit.

I'm a bit late to this party but nice clean build. I like what you did with the cooler hole and mag dust vent over the top, nice! I'm with you about not using 40mm fans in a rack server build if you don't have to. Too darn loud (12-14000rpm ) and they can chew the juice if you have a few of them installed.

That cpu is expensive is one of the best for ipc. Maybe something a bit older could have worked better with those parts

Thanks! I went with the 5900X because I need high core count + high IPC. I'm using this is as a hypervisor hosting 30+ virtual machines in a lab env. GPU is the cheapest I could find just in case I need to plug in a monitor. You can't really fit a gaming GPU in a 2U server chassi.

I went a different way. I’ve got a 1u 3900x with dynatron cooler, this rarely goes over 50c used as a compile server. MB is the asrockrack thing with 10gbit and ipmi. The mini atx version. You get 2x m.2 slots onboard, mounted right next to your 1u fans. It’s a great setup. If I need more storage I’ve found some 1u tall pcie risers which take m.2. Been using them to upgrade older machines to dual m.2 (from no m.2)

@@thefloppydisk9534 yeah. I think that's the one. They only make one 1u for Ryzen as far as I know. You are never going to get "quiet" in 1u though... 😉 Mine is in a separate room in a rack. So I don't care... The firmware on the asrock mb is a little basic but I discovered you can setup all kinds of relationships between the fans and various temp sensors. Perhaps you can do better? I'm my case the thing is quiet at idle. The CPU fan never seems terribly loud (might have the settings incorrect?). However the chassis fans feel like they are on a hair trigger and go full as soon as I kick off a compile (2 hours at all cores maxed). This is quite loud... Overall I would recommend the combination. I think in a 2u chassis you could get it quiet. In a 1u you could get it bearable. I'm plotting a new build in a small NAS case for home use. Will get a 5950x for the server and rotate out the 3900x. However will go with the asrockrack board again as it's the only one I know of with ipmi + ECC? (They do an ITX version as well as mini ATX) The dual m.2 is super. Think I've got some low end Sabrent 2tb driver and they pull like several TB/sec. Silverstone low profile pcie to m.2 fit in 1u. Using these to add more m.2 when needed (not usually bootable when in older machines though)

I think his Samsung SSDs were SATA and the mobo for sure was SATA. So, no conversion was necessary. However, if your drivers are SAS instead of using a converter, I would get an HP mobo that has already SAS on it.

Wow, nice build. I hope you do more. How did you get the drive bays to light up without a backplane? I've been given a HP DL380 G7 server and using it for a test server. It has a single CPU, PSU and 48Gb RAM. I have the option to add another CPU and 72Gb RAM but I have to buy another PSU. I was thinking instead of upgrading, I'll use the chassis for a build instead. But that's not in the near future.

Max temp for the 5900X is 90C so ~10 degrees to spare, should be fine. Yes adding some additional fans to suck in cool air would probably help, or swap to a higher RPM fan.

Yes I realised that when reviewing the material so I removed the old paste and re-applied with with some additional thermal paste. Idling around 46-50C is pretty good for this slim cooler.

Thanks! It's used as a hypervisor for VMs. I don't use plex. Components are listed in the description. GFX is Geforce GT 710 and NIC is Intel I350-T4. You need a low profile GPU, maybe you can fit some sort of low end low profile/short gaming card.

Dynatron coolers ARE GOING TO BE LOUD! I would follow this guy's idea and use a top down noctua. That's what I'm going to do. I'm going to use a 5700G and build a 2U work station.

how about using a couple of 1U server fans? e.g Noctua NF-A4x20 5V PWM the main idea being to pull air from the front and exhaust thru the back over the motherboard and have at least 4 of them in the front

Yepp, that’s an option. There’s room for 3 40mm fans above the IO shield. I had to remove them because the mosfet heatsink on the motherboard was in the way. At the 2 min mark you can see that you can also mount 4 fans in the front, I think they are 50 or 60mm however. I try to stay away from 40mm fans, they’re just too loud if you want a decent airflow.

You need a slimmer CPU cooler like the Nocuta NH-L9A-AM4 for 1U, but it can't handle the base clock of the 5900X. Maybe you can add a bunch of smaller chassi fans but that would probably be very loud. Also 1U typically use ITX motherboards with 2 DIMM slots so that means you're limited to 64GB RAM and one PCIe slot.

Cool video. Unfortunately cutting into the top of a rack mount chassis doesn’t make any sense if you put the server in a rack… unless you leave an open unit for air to escape, in which case I’d go with a 3u chassis and fans.

Great video. I really appreciate it. I’m looking to build a “middle of the road” server to run VMs, but also run some gaming servers on. Do you have any suggestions on hardware. I wouldn’t mind it to be rack mounted but either way is fine. I don’t know if I should go the enterprise route with multiple sockets or consumer side with a crazy processor and board. If you were going to build a machine that can host some gaming but also run VMs what are some hardware recommendations? Or would you build a specific gaming server and a separate VM server? Hi. Last time I hosted a game server was back when F.E.A.R. was popular so I can't really recommend any HW there. I would check the system requirements for each game and build a server based on that. I don't see any reason to go bare metal unless you are hosting a commercial game server dedicated to a specific game, but again my experience here is limited. Prepare to pay a lot more for an enterprise server vs building one yourself.

I have done the exact same setup with the exact same Noctua NH-L12S and my idle temps in the Asus Bios start at 52C and quickly climb (under no additional load just sitting in the bios) to 65C. Do you get the same thing? If not, what might you be doing differently to keep your idle temps down in a 2U Case like this? I cut a hole in mine as will and let the fan under the noctua heatsink blow the air up out of the case.

Did you update the bios? I had similar issue at first, turned out it was showing incorrect values. You can also try and change the fan RPM to see if you lower it.

Hi, your video helped a lot for building in the same chassis. After connecting my 4 disks to the backplane, they aren't found. Before, I had them attached directly by sata cables as a RAID10. Does anyone know how to fix that?

Both the 5900X and your mobo support unbuffered ECC RAM. Is there some specific reason like cost saving you went with regular consumer RAM? I've been running home servers for years and would not cheap out on ECC even when errors are quite rare in practice.

128GB ECC was at least 50% more expensive than non ECC. As this is a lab and not production stuff, I couldn't justify the extra cost. I will just reboot the server in case of and error/crash. With that said, I've been running various home servers for the last 20 years and I don't think I've ever encountered a memory error (at least that I know of)

@@thefloppydisk9534 Under normal operating conditions memory errors are indeed rare. Sure you can easily reproduce them by overclocking your RAM, but in normal conditions if you're ever going to witness one, it'll be more likely on a system running 24/7. There is extra cost involved, but it's worth it in my opinion. At least you won't be left wondering why your backups are corrupted on the very system that was supposed to keep your data safe or there's no unexplained kernel panics on an operating system supposed to be stable. The error either gets corrected or at the very least reported so you know what went wrong.

There are 3 40mm fans included that goes over the IO shield to push air out of the case but I had to remove them because the mosfet heatsink on the motherboard was in the way. If you look at the 2 minute mark you can see that you can also mount 4 fans in the front, I think they are 50mm. (Not included but any aftermarket fans will work). I tend to stay away from 40mm fans, they’re just too loud. Even with just the CPU cooler the computer is very quiet and cool enough for most workloads.

Looks good, a few comments: 1. I don't se any benefit of using X570 chipset over B550 for a server, should be cheaper with B550 2. You can't use a PSU with a 120mm fan in this chassi, you must use one with an 80mm fan in the back of the PSU (same side as power cable) 3. You need a GPU to install the OS unless you do that off box

Access is done over the LAN. I only used the HDMI when I installed VMware ESXi.

Hi. It's part of the chassi. My motherboard don't support hardware RAID so just standards SATA drives mounted in the front.

This is wrong and very armature build. The main problem is horizontal air workflow and the ram direction. No horizontal fans. Ram stop horizontal air. If you want to build pro server you need mainboard with opposition ram slots or you need to change mainboard direction just to allow horizontal air flow via ram slots.
