Choke on a VW is adjustable, you should use shell Rotella diesel oil in it and buy a zinc additive because it has a flat tappet cam. Your shifter has a lockout for reverse. You have to push shifter down to shift into reverse empi shifter has a finger hole that you pull up on to put it in reverse. The breather from the oil filler is just to vent crank case gas, they do occasionally get some oil in the tube I forgot to mention that the tow bar will steer the car for you. There’s nothing that hooks up to your steering.
@mrutherford8590 Жыл бұрын
Under the oil fill tube is a aluminum vented gasket make sure it faces the the right way so oil doesn’t go up the hose and into the air filter. Only crank pressure should go to the air filter
@Arcusfp1 Жыл бұрын
Yes this breather plate can get installed with the vents running the wrong direction, which as the piston blow by moves up into the filter neck it will pull oil up and out of the crankcase if it is turned incorrectly. As the blowby goes up to the air breather to be returned in the engine to be burned, it will pull oil into the air filter. 3 things can cause oil in the air filter, with worn rings causing too much blowby. (Like you said too good of compression for that to be the case.) The motor overfilled with oil, or that vent plate at the bottom of the filler neck, which may be turned wrong or missing altogether.

Be careful once you get bit by the air-cooled bug it's a hard habit to shake. Bought my first air-cooled VW in 1980 and have owned at least one consecutively ever since. I have watched a few of your videos and your skills set will be more than adequate to troubleshoot anything wrong with that engine. If you can work on a motorcycle you can definitely work on a air- cooled Volkswagen. I still have my Volkswagens for dummies manual remember when I started working on these things the internet didn't exist yet.

Hey man! I'm sure you don't remember this but that carb that's on your buggy is the same one I was saying could be a great swap for your grandpa's old goldwings! There's different sizes of it and such but it works great! I had one on my old GL1100. So the big long knob with the electrical connection is the fuel shut-off valve on the carb and the one up high on the other side is for your choke. If you blip the throttle before start-up, it'll turn the choke on and automatically turn itself off as it warms up as long as your driving or blipping the throttle. It has to come off that stepped lever the throttle rests on. The plate with 3 screws by the choke can adjust how long the choke stays on. You may be able to dial that back a bit and have it shut off way sooner and get less smoke that way, idk. Either way, do your research on those carbs, they're weird but they're great once you understand them. Different from any mikuni or kehin I've ever seen. Love your videos man, your a big inspiration to me. Keep it up!

If you continue getting oil in the air filter, check the.The positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve is a simple system that introduces filtered fresh air into the crankcase. @@2vintage I've always been told 20w 50 for air-cooled vw engines that could be why it's burning oil
@Arcusfp1 Жыл бұрын
Use a thicker oil, 5w is way too thin for an older engine. As the engine and oil heat up, you will get less leakage. I always used a non detergent straight 30 weight oil. Detergent oil has additives that help keep dirt and carbon in suspension, which is usually good because the oil carries the debris to a filter to remove it. VW air cooled engines only have coarse strainer, no fine particle filter. You want the dirt and other particles to drop out of the oil so it doesn't keep circulating in the engine. That is why you change the oil much more frequently. Also double check your dipstick, unless it has an extended oil pan or filter added on, they usually hold less than two quarts of oil.

On the vw engine design contributes to smoking - the horizontal cylinder layout of VW Beetle engines means that some oil tends to sit on the lower side of the cylinder rather than draining completely into the sump. This can lead to more oil entering the combustion chamber, especially if the car is parked at an angle.

Should be able to loosen the 3 little screws on the choke clock spring, ice cold, switch off, rotate until choke just starts to crack open, right at the point it starts to open, that should be good. Oil getting into fuel and visa-versa from your head gasket. It's the head-bolt plugs that are pulling out. The last guy knew about it and wanted to shift his problem somewhere far away.

that thing on the carb is an anti-run-on valve that shuts off fuel to the carb, the 12v feed to that should also go to the choke.

wants to be running on old mineral 30 weight or 20/50 mineral. i tried semi synth and it threw it out of the crank breather " misted bad" when you reved the engine to the higher end, the old school mineral stopped it diong that . you want a oil catcher rigging up with a return to oil. check and clear / clean the j tubes too .
