So cool to have this just up here on youtube. I don't think I've seen these little moves before like bumping forward, it's just so interesting.

Very nice! The subtle details are where it's at. After starting Judo, I remember thinking, man this is way more technical than I anticipated.

For sure, there's like the base level of learning complicated techniques towards perfection, yet after that comes application and after that becomes all the competitive strategies and meta games that aren't "text book" stuff.

Im in this boat right now. Much more difficult to learn than I thought, but I keep telling myself anything worth learning is difficult or everyone would do it

Gi control is as technical as it gets. I get really excited teaching people who are starting out, trying to teach them the finer details can really make people turn tails. But I really love it. Changing grip position by 1 cm can mean a lot in Judo.

I love those entries feom the high grip, he makes it look so elegant instead of the slapping way of getting the high grip XD. Thanks for sharing, I am 100 kilos guy with a similar body of the man so I think it suits my not so fast style.

I still feel like the nature of that right hand upper lapel grip eludes me. Is it just pulling the head forward during the step? I learned Uchi Mata with the elbow underneath the armpit, but it seems like all the most skilled Judoka use this method with the arm almost fully extended.
@alexandrehuat773
@alexandrehuat773 26 күн бұрын
Uchi mata is not about the grip but the legs. Uchi = inside, mata = between the legs. That means "throwing down the opponent from your inner leg that lifts him in between his legs". The hands lift the opponent on your leg so that you can throw him down with it after.
@sway71

@@alexandrehuat773 Yeah, I know the meaning of the move, but all Judo techniques require 3 parts: kuzushi (off-balancing), tsukuri (entering), and kake (execution or finish). Uchi mata describes the entry, but requires you to rotate the opponent's torso in the proper way to make it work without going to ken ken uchi mata. I know how to perform the throw (and have done so many times, albeit in Jiujitsu), but I was saying that I don't understand the leverage of the more modern arm position. Travis Stevens said that the elbow down was to protect against leg grabs, but I don't see the advantage of having the arm so far from the body (other than it being an easier grip to attain).

I deeply respect Higashi‘s expertise, but witnessing a 6th dan tying his obi the ‚lazy‘ way (criss-cross behind the back) always takes away a little of the charm… especially as it’s about a man born to Japanese parents.
