My satisfaction levels reached a critical level at this scene; I was by myself and I literally cheered when Emily drove the knife into Lydia's back and cracked her a good one across the jaw and sent her over the bannister then kicked the crap out of her. However, I'm glad that Aunt Lydia lived, the reason being so she could live with the pain and trauma (albeit not enough of it) and think back to this moment every time she mistreats another Handmaid. Unfortunately, given her attitude in season 3, I still don't think Lydia has learned her lesson, she desperately needs another ass-kicking.

It was satisfying that this moment finally arrived. I just don't understand why it didn't come sooner, and against more perpetrators in Gilliad. The Handmaids and Marthas have more power than they make use of. That's why I think Gilliad could never happen. It would only be a matter of time before many households started coordinating murders, like through poisonings or just outright rage killings.
@vena6481 Жыл бұрын
It just wouldn’t work. They *dont* have power; only the illusion of such. Eyes are everywhere- planning murder is almost impossible in case you get caught. Then there’s the risk of Colonies, Salvagings even particutions. While the show deviates from the novel, I would suggest reading it. It covers the level of punishment involved with being a subversive. They don’t have any power at all.

@@Orius25 have you read the novel? Yeah there are ways but killing your commanders is not one of them. Where would you go after killing them? The handmaids aren’t near eachother enough to plan a full rebellion, you can never tell who is a true believer and who isn’t. The only options in Gilead are through MayDay and the Underground Female road (as per the novel, which is the source material) and they’re difficult to get a hold of as is. Escaping Gilead is nigh-impossible, it’s meant to be that way. By the time the novel concludes there’s been several periods of Gilead before it’s downfall.

Can’t find it. But if you don’t want to be a wife and were born in a high ranking family you can choose to be an Aunt. The females that enforce the rules. They are the only women that are allowed books. They are forced to study a lot. And then only when they are ready they are told the truth about how society really works. They are forced to scrub toilets and stuff when they are first selected in the book. To force a sense of humility. To ensure that they don’t think that they are better than the females they are supposed to enforce order on. I never thought I would make a good wife to anyone to be honest. i'm in no way trying to excuse her behavior, but in the beginning, as shown in the book "the testaments", lydia is also shaped and mentally tortured by the regime, and physically beaten, to make her into an aunt to begin with, but was also kind of a bitch before that? she'd also had an abortion when she was young. she went to law school, but was a schoolteacher for a time, and then became a judge. her group that was rounded up after the attacks when the government had fallen was made up of other female judges and lawyers and other professionals that dealt with the law, in order to make up the aunts. the women who were chosen to potentially become aunts had to pass two tests. first, cooperation, or face the Thank Tank (solitary isolation, then physical beating, then a few days of rest and being pampered) and then second, shooting someone that had been marked to die. one of the women that was executed was one of her work friends. lydia and four other women were basically told to make new laws for gilead concerning women, since because of their experiences, lydia and the other aunts could better understand how to keep women in control.
