That's because this isn't about promoting fertility. It's about exerting control under the false pretense of religion. None of the commanders believe in what they preach, hence the existence of Jezebels. They only pretend to believe to stay in power.

it's the same as all the men who partake in p0rn. there's no way they HAVEN'T pleasured themselves to the abuse of another. they just don't know it and therefore don't believe it's happening. add to that the false narrative sex work is "empowering". sex work is empowering to women EXACTLY like the Haidmaids are "lucky" and that birth was a "joyous and holy experience". lib feminists who tote "sex positivity" of this nature are simply perpetuating catering to male sexual interest. lambs to the slaughter. a trojan horse through the gates.

June screaming, "Stop her! Stop her!" and no one does anything. She took a huge risk intervening after all those powerful men and women of the "superior moral standing" did nothing. This is a very intense scene with so many layers of implication. I love this show and the books so much. There is so much to be said and brings up so many very real and current topics that permeate the current state of our country (the US).

This is what CYS and the family courts does to women . All for the dead beat fathers to get their way . They hire women and men on the streets to harass those women and make their life hell just so they give up . Even try to con them to do watch their children for free while their child is in the system . Where they know you won't hurt their children, While they are sexually molesting your child. Or they are brainwashing your child while in the system to be their slave. THEY only breed children to gain pity from others and manipulate everyone around them to get them to side with them , they really know how to smooth talk and butter people up to blind you , even help you to blind you too . .

In psychology this is what we call transference. They get to all pretend Aunt Lydia is the bad guy because she is displaying the violence out in the open, which is taboo. Meanwhile, they are the ones who created the system that Lydia operates under. This scene is pure projection. Evil deflecting evil onto a more obvious source to appear more righteous. They do seem genuinely shocked though, especially the wives. Not so out of sight, out of mind anymore is it?

It's to keep us on edge for the ourposes of immersion. The show depicts an abusive environment that is propogated by reactionaries and their values. In such environments, physical and psychological abuse is rampant. It is one where one finds themselves confused by drastic fluctuations of manipulative kindess and paternalistic discipline.

When Fred Waterford looks at your violence with disgust you know you've done wrong... But really, i agree with those saying that nobody wanted to see the brutality that they could usually pretend wasn't there right in front of them. Also, does anyone notice how Naomi doesn't hold Angela's head or cover her ears or hold her even tighter? If most mothers had violence taking place in front of them and their baby, i feel like the natural instinct is to hold their head to your chest, cover their ears, and turn your back towards the violence... mothers instinctually protect their babies. Naomi didn't do that.

But I think she did. Sure she did not make a considerable effort, but you can see she is covering the baby's eyes. Remember that this is a first child for first time mothers. Although she has that instinct to protect her child, you still are unfamiliar to holding a baby and to how fragile they can be.
@Sawrattan

I don't think Fred was disgusted, he was angry that Aunt Lydia showed Gilead's true colours. It's like when Serena barred Janine from the party in S1 because she didn't want the guests to see her mutilation. Aunts do the dirty work for the elites.
@Orius25

This scene is interesting, psychologically. Everyone in the room except the handmaids is guilty of contributing to what Aunt Lydia did. They created and benefited from the system that is beating Jeannine in front of them. Yet they get to deflect responsibility by making Aunt Lydia look like the bad guy. The projection here is huge. I think that's why June didn't get in trouble, because it was more shocking to see an Aunt use her tactics out in the open. Not so out of sight, out of mind anymore is it?

What would happen when the children of the handmaiden grow up? A lot of them will be half siblings, especially if the are rotating the maidens in the same city. This will be a bigger issue if they want their children to get married. Unless they have arranged marriage like they did for Eden.

First they get sent to other districts June's last walking partner had like 4-5 babies but it seemed like she was new to that group. ^ Both above answers are correct. This is the evil of Gilead, however, and what the regime didn't plan for. You are going to have a massive crisis of unimaginable proportions of children, both boys and girls growing into adults who don't know who their real mothers were. They will sense something is off, even if they are forbidden from saying something about it. And what if the next generation of Gileadean children are all fertile? Would there be a need for more handmaids? Probably not. But you'd still have the oppression of the classes and the restrictive roles of Gilead society, and that is how you know that this was never about restoring the population after the fertility crisis. It was only ever about subjugating and oppressing women.

Janine goes through so much shit, honestly. When baby Angela/Charlotte nearly died in hospital Janine stayed up all night with her and saved her. Lydia wanted her stoned to death then dragged to the colonies. Lydia then went brutally ballistic on her in this scene. Not too mention plucking her eye out in the first episode of S1. Id have gone mad myself. Poor girl .

What makes this scene even more sad for me, is Janine was tending to Aunt Lydia, she brought her tea, offered her a macron, and even thanked Aunt Lydia for saving her from The Colonies. And this is how she's treated. All the handmaids deserve better, but if there's anyone that deserves so much more than this, it's Janine. I'd like to think that Janine eventually does escape from Gilead, or Gilead ends, she gets to have Charlotte, and meets a guy or girl that will truly love her, or she stands as an independent woman. But the way this show goes, I don't see that happening, which makes this even sadder.

She the one who teaches the ceremony , she the real tyrant of this story. That crazy bitch has mental issues from her own insecurities. Serena Joy is nothing compared and I'm not sure how Serena can be felt accountable for Hubert and nick she ask june if she was willing to sleep with nick june said yes and went for it ( several times in fact that serena didn't even know about) june was a total willing participate she was just uncomfortable the first time because serena was in the room. I don't get it ? The wife was even okay with it ? Why over react like that when clearly it would've been a smart choice to be their handmaids again. They had one succesful child already. Which mean Janine and the commander are both genetically compatible. In a world where 90% of ppl are steril wouldn't that'd be extremely smart ?

I can’t understand. If the whole point of Gilead was to tackle the birthing crisis and increase population numbers. Surely they would treat their fertile women with the upmost care and respect.
@violax3735
@violax3735 2 жыл бұрын
The birthing crisis is just a pretext for power-hungry men to get power. In fact, many if not most don't give a crap about kids or the crisis. Sprinkle in misogyny and religious fanaticism and you get Gilead. If they were really about getting as many babies as possible, they wouldn't restrict the handmaids to the commanders only, they would test men's fertility, they would allow artificial insemination and they would have better prenatal care - for example, many handmaids carry to birth children with serious birth defects that are incompatible with life - if this was about "efficiency", you'd abort those kids months earlier and "start again". If this was about "get as many babies as possible", there's a lot of things that could be done better - for example, why force the handmaids into sex with the commanders if they just wanted kids? Any sex with fertile men should be good as long as you're only concerned about "repopulating Earth". June and Luke already proven that they can have kids together - why break them up if you want more healthy kids? And if you do break them up, then why is Luke also not "valued" as capable of fathering healthy children? Well, because it doesn't fit into the Gilead power structure...

I mean why can't they just share parentship ? Like, for example, when you adopt a child, you are immediately that child's new parent. But by some reason, the child's biological parents come and want to have them back, then the child would obviously be in a cross. Both parents can act as their parents. They don't have to fight over the child. They could just be there and share. In some way I think it'd have been better in the future if she were to remain there and have a healthy relationship with the wife. They both had a child, and the child've received twice the amount of love. Of course, this is all wishful thinking

You know where I come from the likes of aunt Lydia would end up with her hands nailed to a picnic table and some very calm dispassionate boy would then proceed to cut off her eyelids, then her fingers, then her toes. Then he'd let her rest for a while. Then she'd lose her teeth. Not quick mind, but pulled one at a time as teeth in a good state are a commodity in some parts of the world. After she's had another brief rest and some water hed slide a skewer into her ears and rupture her eardrums. Then he'd pull her tongue out of her mouth with pliers and get another young boy to cut it away and cauterise the wound so she won't choke to death on her own blood. Now it's not always easy to get them this far due to blood loss and more commonly due to shock but if she were to survive this punishment then her life would be her own. I mean why would you ever bother to kill a creature that is physically no longer a threat and cannot identify you as the perpetrator? And the punishment speaks for itself so its not as though you have need of their tongue to pass it along. The message is simple. There are things in this world far worse than death. Being a deaf, unintelligible, blind helpless sack of something faintly resembling a human is not how anyone wants to spend their last years. Death is merciful in cases such as these, but not something worthy of consideration.
