First one showed missing parts. Second one was complete. It's a working bench grinder kzbin.infoUgkxxC8HPnl24fu0XhMU_nbmWNEUoK1RMHXk . One thing I like alot is that it's surprisingly quiet. I don't feel like I'm sacrificing any rpms or power for the quietness either. All in all it's a very nice machine. No vibration whatsoever.

I am envious. Thanks for the great information on a superior tool. I have a WEN 4x36 table top belt sander with a 90 degree tilt. It's a classic example of a good tool for the price and works great for what I need, and use it to accomplish. Still, there is always a mind set of wanting greater and better tools that can help you go above and beyond what you currently do. I have learned from you however, that you often have to make do with what you can afford. It is the individual's creativity and willingness to grow and learn that makes for excellence. I know some day in the future i will have something this nice, being a young 31 year old there is a lot of room to grow. Your videos always make my day and me smile. Thanks.

I bought my first grinder last year and it's 6x78" grinder with a 3HP motor. It eats metal without hesitation. It runs really smoothly and every part of it is simple, like you say. It's got tons of mass and I get zero vibration. It's not at all common for knife making as there are limitations, such as the the 8" contact wheel being fixed (or not easily changed). But I think there is a lot to be said for getting the best made grinder you can find (this one was delivered to me next day - less than 12 hours after ordering) and then *learning* how to get the most out of it. Every grinder has it's nuances and details, and learning how to grind efficiently and effectively is a skill in itself. 2x72 seems the go-to for knife making but I really feel no limits with mine (Beyond my own learning curve), making kitchen knives.

Nice grinder. I went on the linked website and for the money is seems like you get a lot of grinder with a Pheer. I've been looking to get a 2x72 belt grinder and so I had set out to build my own and I started to collect the steel I would need for the job. Before I could get all the steel together, and settle on a design, I came across a Burr King model 960 on Craigslist for $200. It turned out to be a 1975 model and it works great. Very impressed by the quality of Burr King, but you are correct these grinders are too expensive.

If you ever need reversible, just set a switch up to reverse two of the phases. That's one of the real nice things about a three phase motor. Variable freq works on single phase but the current draw is all on that single phase. Three phase divides the current across each of them.

Scott you speak of vibration. A dampening agent you may not know of. I refer to Marine Sealant Adhesive. 3M has it in 520 or 5200 ,product number. Can never remember which is woodgrain, which is either black or white. There is also Sikaflex, similar or identical chemistry, not sure. I am not exaggerating when I say this stuff is capable of replacing the rubber in the motor mount of a truck engine. Amazingly good adhesive, very strong when cured. Multiple applications than just gap filling adhesive. You spoke of vibration. Using this stuff between two metal plates would go a long way to seriously reduce transmitted vibration. Should also do well in absorbing vibration . Depending on where it is placed of course. The stuff is not cheap, but a couple of cartridges for experimentation would be a good investment, I think. Well worth the time invested in finding out what it can do for you. Cheers.

The motor and VFD are really what make these so expensive. They are completely worth the money!! Although its a fairly simple build IF you have a set of cutting torches or a light duty plasma cutter to make the frame of this specific unit. If you copied this design anyways. Great looking tool and I love the durability of the frame. Definitely appears to be well built. A must for any type of work that requires an edge or a modified profile that isn't obtainable by forging.

That does look like a nice grinder. Great review! Back when I was getting into knifemaking, I lusted over the similarly-proportioned Beaumont KMG. Not sure I've heard of a 2x72 at Harbor Freight. I've been suggesting they carry one for a while. Grizzly has one in the two-wheel configuration like your shop-built, as does Kalamazoo, though the price of being made in the USA seems to be an additional $260 and an even more anemic motor. I've seen some interesting (though shockingly not dissimilar from American original) designs pop up on AliExpress from time to time as well. They're usually listed as "2x82", but the toolarm and receiver design would make them compatible with 2x72 belts as well it seems.

Scott, you should look up Jeremy Schmidt's 2x72 belt grinder build here on KZbin. It's what I would call legendary as well. He'd probably have to charge more than $1500 for them if he sold them! EDIT: He's a young guy, but it seems he's thought of everything-- it tilts and and has replaceable tools, jigs, and tables. It's precisely built and way overbuilt. I'm sure it will last longer than any of us will, and I think you'd love to see it.

There are many "2 X 72" manufacturer's. I went with the RPI company. It stands for Reeder Products Inc (ReederProducts.com). After watching many many videos about these grinders, I decided that RPI is among the very best; in design and building them. Not to mention that they have 16 videos from the beginning to now; that really gets into the hows and what not to do and what you need. In any case, if you want a quality complete 2 X 72 grinder, you are going to be bumping $2,000.00. Yes you can get it for less. But.........

One other major thing. Be VERY careful of ANY VFD (Variable Frequency Driver) that is not dust free. For these grinders are mainly for metal. We are talking about micro metal particles that are shooting at high speed in every direction. And unless your VFD is not dust-free, those "filings" will get into your controller and possibly destroy it. I know of NO VFD that has that feature, except for the KBAC (Generic) series. Yes you can locate the controller away from the machnine by using remote controls (higher cost). But then you can not roll it around the place as well as outside. Check it out.
