Actually some of these older boats deserve the time, unfortunately, people want A/C, dishwasher, washer/dryer, 4 car garage, electric sails, cruise control and absolutely no working on the boat. If any boat requires any work, NEXT! For something they may use every other weekend through the summer only.

In their day, these boats were rockets, particularly in light conditions. I crewed on one in 1972. The local PHRF handicap committee in Montreal kept increasing our rating until ours matched that of the C&C 30. Even still, we won every race but the last one that season. Our local hot shot, who raced an Alberg 30, called them ugly. My response was, "Yes, but ugly boats go fast."

As someone who was born and grew up in Oakville and currently resides there, the history of boatbuilding here starts at Oakville's very beginning due to the stand of Oak trees that was here. Today I am not sure of any boat building going on. I didn't even know about Grampian although I grew up a stone's throw from Woody road. I knew of C&C here. Great deal providing sails are good? If not: that's another 3-3500 bucks on top of 1500-2500 for reliable outboard. add another 2000 for basic electronics. Add another 2500-3000 for hot water for sink, shower, water pump, water lines, and larger water holding tanks. When done: I see a 10-12000 boat that will safely and comfortably take me anywhere. Not a bad price for a reliable boat. Reasonable and cheap investment for fun times. Sweet boat!
@crankyoldguy2

He didn't show us the head, but my guess is that, because the boat is not large, it's 'good luck' if you want to put a shower (maybe also a sink0 in the space and still be able to sit on the pot. In a boat this small, water is pumped at the tap most of the time, so a water pump would be a luxury that you COULD add without much effort. The boat was manufactured prior to the mandates concerning waste water, so I'll bet there's a direct head, not a chem toilet or holding tank. Et cetera. A great place to start, and as you suggest, it will 'need some work'.

A quick correction on Dirk's name, it's Dirk, not Dick. I grew up in Oakville and my family owned a Grampian 26, a fairly rare one as the hull was chocolate and the topsides were cream. The name was Irish Coffee. I knew Dirk's son as he was friends with the owners of the sailing store I worked at in high school. Great boat and we did very well racing her. In the summer I lived on the boat down in the harbour, many great memories. I would buy it in a heart beat, especially for that price, if I could get it down to Belize without breaking the bank.

1. A little bit off topic but you have wonderful transition music. somebody must be a jazz aficionado. 2 .Depth sounders of the type shown here could also give you a clue as to the type of bottom, a hard or soft bottom, based on the width of the indicator illumination of the face of the "dial".
@YachtHunters
@YachtHunters 3 жыл бұрын
I never thought of that but what I did like about it was that you didn’t have to stare at it to know what the water depth was you just knew on the “clock face quote of the depth sounder roughly what the depth was at a glance. It was very convenient and somehow more relevant to what was going on with the water. Just reading a number makes you have to think for a second how that relates to you. Watching a flashing line slowly decreasing or increasing tells you that you’re on the right or wrong track

Im saving this in my bookmarks. This would be perfect for someone like me looking to get into sailing and use it as a blue water cruiser. Shorthanded a 26-32 is exactly the size im looking for. You cant beat the price since i would add another 2k in interior upgrades and another 2k for a extra coat on top and bottom treatment, also sheets/lines replacement. There are a few concerns i have. The leakage you mentioned is that a structure issue? Or does the hardware and fiberglass needs to be replaced. How does the deck feel? is it mushy. last question would be is that a wood paneling on the doors and bulkhead or is that solid wood?

Yeah , some concerns...motor 5k, sails? 3k, lines, survey, trailer, electronics, batteries, solar. I like the boat but man these things are not cheap to keep up and be safe

That's a tidy little vessel and if you tossed another 5K to 7K $$ or so at it then it would be even more tidy and a real winner.

Look into the Grampian Classic 31, a Peter Van Dine design from ‘64 to?. ‘68. If you would like to check out a nice one come to Baltimore and see #10 of 20 built in Ontario.

How many points come off for that cast iron keel rusting up so much it split the fiberglass? I'd say 30.

ok question .. could you get lets say 24 tf yacht with no masts or sails . fit outboard and go to sea ( double fin ) and would it be stable ? if not could you then fit outriggers then use it as a catamaran.. honest question as really new to this .. on west coast scotland so waters a bit choppy .. and just need to get one side of loch to other safely about 8 miles around a few points

My previous boat was outboard powered and a similar type and size though different design my children my wife and I enjoyed the heck out of that boat and did some serious miles and long holidays away, my current boat is diesel inboard and I miss the outboard no heat or smells in the cabin and repairs were so easy particularly as when all else fails taking the outboard to the mechanic is allot cheaper though as I was poorer then I would just buy old second hand outboards when they wear out. An awesome system only downside was outboards could be a bit poor at handling hobby horsing so an occasional headwind through a tight channel could get difficult.

If memory serves me correctly, the Grampian was a stiff boat. Had one of the highest ballast to weight ratios of all others. Heavily built yet nimble.....at anchor though she would rock you to death.

If have thought that putting in and inboard (diesel or electric) maybe with a sail drive, would be fairly simple. Update the interior and she'd be a great pocket cruiser. Not sure about that rudder though. Looks undersized and not hung in the strongest fashion?

Mine had an SD the well remains plated and is pushed by a johnson 8. would like a little bigger for coastal imo but she can really take it.
