If you are still under GM warranty it would not be wise to deviate from the the Dexos D spec. If you have an issue with your engine, GM is going to request all your receipts and documentation for oil changes and they could technically deny your claim, regardless of whether the oil caused the issue or not. Rear main seal blowing out is a common issue with the Baby Max.

“DexosD” was developed by GM for licensing/branding marketing. Oil companies pay GM big bucks to stick that spec on their bottle. Currently, Ow-20 is the weight (5w-30 is on the way). GM recommends this arctic oil to meet CAFE standards. Any ACEA C3/C5 or VW 507/509 oils are just fine. Many other brands are fine too…even those that choose not to pay GM to license the brand. Your truck won’t notice the difference with the Castrol you used. 👍

@@johndsmith7785 because DEXOS D isn't an artic oil. It has a HT/HS of 2.9 or greater which means it's actually "thicker" than many 30 grades. The Castrol used here isn't remotely close to what is specified and DEXOS isn't just a license it's an actual performance specification.

I believe that the oil you used will be fine. The only thing that concerns me is that the oil pump on the Duramax 3.0 is driven by a belt and that belt may be sensitive to the oil type.
