0w-20 is so Chevy can please the EPA fuel economy requirements. That's why these engines get blow by. After break-in, I use 5w-30, no issues at all. I did the same with my two Toyotas, no issues.

Demon works actually posted the clearances for the engine. Very tight. I think 30W would work in a pinch but looks like sticking to a 20W is ideal.

If you are still under GM warranty it would not be wise to deviate from the the Dexos D spec. If you have an issue with your engine, GM is going to request all your receipts and documentation for oil changes and they could technically deny your claim, regardless of whether the oil caused the issue or not. Rear main seal blowing out is a common issue with the Baby Max.

“DexosD” was developed by GM for licensing/branding marketing. Oil companies pay GM big bucks to stick that spec on their bottle. Currently, Ow-20 is the weight (5w-30 is on the way). GM recommends this arctic oil to meet CAFE standards. Any ACEA C3/C5 or VW 507/509 oils are just fine. Many other brands are fine too…even those that choose not to pay GM to license the brand. Your truck won’t notice the difference with the Castrol you used. 👍

@@johndsmith7785 because DEXOS D isn't an artic oil. It has a HT/HS of 2.9 or greater which means it's actually "thicker" than many 30 grades. The Castrol used here isn't remotely close to what is specified and DEXOS isn't just a license it's an actual performance specification.

I'm looking to get a Silverado RST Duramax next year and I will definitely be doing my own maint because the dealership charges way too much and usually screws things up anyway. Here's a tip... don't rush taking the oil filter off. Just loosen it a little until it starts to drain and let it drain slowly, then you can remove it without oil running down your arm.

That oil (Dexos 2 5w-30 not to be confused with Dexos 1 gen 2 or 3) is also spec’d in the Cruze diesel, equinox and terrain diesel, Colorado and canyon diesel, all with the same emission systems / after treatment systems. Currently we’re running the 0-20 Dexos D in ours, but we have fleet pricing through the dealer and it is basically the same price for us as Dexos 2.

I believe that the oil you used will be fine. The only thing that concerns me is that the oil pump on the Duramax 3.0 is driven by a belt and that belt may be sensitive to the oil type. Amazon, as you probably know has everything you needed in stock the Dexos D oil and the PF66. While that truck is under warranty I personally would only use OEM, but that's me.

My recommendation is to change the oil more often, like 5,000 miles instead of the factory 10k recommendation. With emissions era diesels, everything will be more expensive. The 0w20 vs 5w30 is for cafe rules. They can claim 1 mpg better with thin oil and another mpg with the 10 speed transmission.

The hyperventilating in the comments is a non issue. The 0w20 weight is for cheating fuel economy… VW learned the hard way about this an the BRM disaster they had with the TDIs.
