２０１１年３月１１日午後２時４６分、東北沖で国内観測史上最大のマグニチュード９．０の地震が発生。巨大な津波が押し寄せるなどして全国で１万５８９９人が亡くなるなど甚大な被害が出ました。
JNN各局に残されている当時の貴重な映像を「アーカイブ」化して、防災意識を高めるとともに、当時の記憶を後世に伝えます。
東日本大震災の「あの日の記録」をJNNの映像で振り返ります。
宮城県気仙沼市では津波によって漁船やタンクなどが押し流されていました。

レポートしている女性アナウンサーの声、聞いたことあるかもと思ったら、 名久井アナなんですね。下にも書いていらっしゃる方がいますが、「ぼんやり〜ぬTV」の 気仙沼ロケの最中に地震が起きて、安波山に登って避難したということでしたから、 そこから見えた津波の様子をレポートしていたんですね。 「みんなちゃんと逃げたかなあ……」という心配そうな伊達さんと思しき方の声もありますね。

Truly terrible. The volume of water, the speed of it, to have been there bust have felt like the world was coming to an end. To see, when they zoomed in, people walking to the second floor of a building, while that wall of water was flowing around them, must have been so very terrifying. Horrible thing. Prayers to all those who died, and to all those who are still suffering 10 years on.

This angle of the Kesennuma Tsunami is incredible! Amazing to see that while the main surge is sweeping the port, in the shallow part at the entrance of the bay the crest of the second wave creates a real wall of water (one the highest i've ever seen).

From this high vantage point I'm able to recognize the two locations where several other videos were shot, which many of us have watched repeatedly since 2011. 0:35 - At center far right are the two waterfront multistory buildings from which two videos were shot; one from each building. There were two warehouses to the left of the larger structure; one with a red roof and the other with a green roof. At this point, the red-roofed one has been completely destroyed and the last remains of the green roof are crushed against the upper building. In those videos you also see the large fuel tanks being pushed around, which are visible here. 3:27 - At the far left is a blue building with a logo of a jumping fish in white; then in the center of the screen there's a grey concrete building with arches. There are three videos of the view of this street looking to the left as the water floods in. One of these was mostly shot from the grey building after the man who shot it evacuated from his building to the right, which was destroyed. The two others were taken from the small hill at the right, which was a tsunami evacuation site.

Man, the driver of that big fishing vessel that barely made it over the lip as the wave broke probably had to change his pants afterwards, that was the closest call I've seen, the lip was literally coming down when he made it over and pulled a semi-floater essentially, he was lucky he was on the small part of that wave, if he had been on the other side the face would have been at least 2 and 1/2 times as tall as his boat was long.

One can only imagine the thoughts of rooftop survivors as they watch the sea climb higher up the building they're standing on! The gigantic waves, the speed and sheer power of the sea, pounding at the walls of their only place of safety. Thankfully, their building was able to withstand what so many could not, and they are saved! Even in this horrific tragedy, the magnificence of those beautiful waves was tremendous, the power of nature fascinating, even as it shredded buildings and obliterated entire communities! This breathtaking, once in a lifetime event, captured on camera in all its lethality and destructiveness still has the power to captivate and fascinate! Unfortunately, the only certainty is that there will be future earthquakes and tsunamis, though no one can say what their magnitude may be! As a direct result of so many 2011 tsunami videos, I believe that future warnings to immediately evacuate to high ground will be taken far more seriously by people whom saw for themselves the consequences of being caught by the water or the debris field. Now that people know that the seawalls do not ensure safety, they merely give a few minutes in which residents may evacuate to higher ground. The lessons of the 2011 tsunami were paid for in terrible human, residential, business and infrastructure costs and future warnings will be more respected and complied with.

Look at the size of the wave coming in at about :50. It's huge. Many of these large waves broke further out , depending upon the topography of the ocean floor, and came ashore as foaming walls of water.
