Hi, Prof. Xie, I'm Zehao in NIMS if you still have a memory of our meet in TMS2020... Thank you very much for your series lecture on the dislocation theory, I learned a lot! I have one question, how to distinguish the kink and cross-slip from the TEM image of Mg alloy deformation? I can not determine it clearly... Looking forward to your reply!

Hi Zehao, glad to hear from you. Kinks are very small, usually only one atomic layer in size. My understanding is dislocations in Mg more likely to cross slip rather than moving via the double kink mechanism. In pure Mg c-axis compression, dislocation loops are present, suggesting the movement of dislocation is mediated by the jog or super-jog mechanism. Hope this information helps. :)
