23 yrs old using this video as a refresher. I got 1.712, getting 163/9,520 then dividing 9,520 by 163 and converted it to a decimal by long division.

3/560 + 1/85 multiply both denominators if you're lazy like me 560 x 85 = 47600, that's the Denominator 3/560 = (47600/560) = 85 x the numerator 3 gives us 255/47600 rinse repeat 1/85 = (47600/85) = 560x the numerator 1 gives us 560/47600 now the problem reads with same denominator and can be solved: 255/47600 + 560/47600 = 815/47600 815/47600 is reduced easily because both numerator and denominator are easily divisible by 5 that reduces to 163/9520. it's still a workout though LOL

The first thing I saw was the 5 and the 0, and I used Bow Tie and got the answer right and reduced it, no problem. I didn’t remember the factoring part, but I remember it from many years ago. I do recognize that factoring would be important with algebra. I need to look up your lessons on that! Still, I got the problem right all the way from start to reducing! 15:20 … Thank you for your postings. I have 2 grandsons. One is in the 2nd grade. I’m trying to brush up on my math skills if I ever need to help them. I did average in school (in the 60’s/70’s) until I got to calculus. I’m trying to understand why we can “throw away” a 5 at 15:20 when multiplying the prime factors together instead of using a 5 to the second power there. Otherwise I think I follow the process. I’ll practice the method of finding the LCD your demonstrate here and cross-check with the bow tie method. BTW, thank you for the PEMDAS help.

It looks you don't repeat across the fraction. So, since 5 and 17 were matched in the two equations you only use one representative for those factors. I hope that helps...?

Solution: First you do the prime factorization of the denominators: 560 => 56 * 10 => 7 * 8 * 2 * 5 => 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 5 * 7 => all are prime 86 => 5 * 17 => all are prime The only common prime is 5, so all other factors combined are the factor, that you need to extend the other fraction: 3/560 => extend by 17 => (3 * 17) / (560 * 17) = 51 / (560 * 10 + 560 * 7) = 51 / (5600 + 500 * 7 + 60 * 7) = 51 /(5600 + 3500 + 420) = 51/9520 1/85 => extend by 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 7 = 16 * 7 = 112 => (1 * 112) / (85 * 112) = 112 / (85 * 100 + 85 * 10 + 85 * 2) = 112 / (8500 + 850 + 170) = 112/9520 So the equation becomes 51/9520 + 112/9520 = 163/9520 since 163 is prime and not a factor of 9520 (as we have shown, 9520 = 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 5 * 7 * 17), it can't be simplified further.

I think that you should emphasize the right way to decompose a number in prime factors starting by the lowest prime divisor. In that way, 560 = 2x2x2x2x5x7. This order is important to generalize the method. Knowledge of first prime numbers in ascending order : 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19…and using them to systematically decompose numbers in prime factors is the best practice

ok so if 85 is the lcd we can say we need a 0 at the end. So first number that would do that is 10 * 85, that is too big next is 8 * 85 also too big and now 6 * 85that would be too small so 85 is not the denominator we want. both numbers are pretty big so unless you are super uber at knowing factors, we gotta do this the hard way and use the bow tie method. (not always hard, but can be if you're dealing with large numbers) Bow Tie Method: [(85 *3) + (560 * 1)] / (85 * 560) 85 * 3 is 255. 560 * 1 is 560. So numerator is 815. Now the hard part the denominator. 85 * 560 is the same as 85 * 56 BUT with an extra 0 at the end. So left to right 85 * 5 is 425 with an extra 0 so 4250. 85 * 6 is 510. so 85 * 560 is 47,600. (First extra zero is because we went left to right instead of right to left. Second extra zero is because we took a 0 off from 560 and made it 56. This part ONLY works with zeroes.) 815/47600 can further be reduced by a factor of 5. 815/5 and 47600/5 is 163 then 47600/5 is 9520 is the denominator So the final answer is 163/9520

Being old-timey, I naturally gravitated to the bowtie method and got the 47600 denominator by using long-form multiplication. At that point I was not able to see how to simplify the fraction easily. I really like your "find the primes" technique for getting to the simplified denominator directly. I'll try to remember it next time I have big denominators. Cool!

815/47600 divide the fraction by 5, will give you the correct lowest denominator answer. I find this method easier.

I am glad you came up with this problem. I have learned the bow tie method. I must admit, it sort of confused me. I did it by multiplying both denominators. Which gave me 47600. I divided 47600 by 560=85 then 85*3=255. Then 47600*85=560. Add both numerators=815/47600. I reduced the answer by dividing both numerators and denominator by 5=163/9520 It's quite interesting that we keep mentioning our ages. Lol. I am 66 years. 🤣🤣 Keep them coming my man.

I can usually do your problems in my 68 year old head... but not this one. I identified the LCD would be 560*17, and 112*85... but doing that multiplication in my head was too hard. I did get the 163 as the numerator though. I also recognized it could not be reduced.

I find your approach consing and too meandering. My approach (I used \ instead of ___ because of formatting of one line of text instead of three): 3/560 + 1/85 = ((3*85) + 560*1) / (560*85) = ((3*17*5) + (112*5)) / (112*5*85) = 5*((3*17) + 112) / 5*(112*85) = ((3*17) + 112)/(112*85) = (51+112)/(112*85) = 163/9520 Using ____ instead of \, it's a lot easier to see cross-multiplications and cancellations and is more clear overall, but the comments section doesn't allow for that kind of notation.

In the bow-tie method, I understand why the 2 denominators are multiplied together to give a common denominator. But can someone explain why we cross multiply to get the numerators? I don’t think it is helpful to show these shortcuts without explaining why they work. It is hard to remember rules that you don’t understand. At least it is for me.

I use the bowtie method and got it right yoohoo - as far as I remember after 60 plus years, that is what I learned in school - I don't remember the one with the prime numbers - looks way more complicated to me but thank you for sharing this - keeps my brains working, better than those pills to keep my brains alert. 🤣🤣🤣

5 is the common prime, and if removed from both 85 and 560, you obtain what you need to multiply the other fraction by. The first fraction is multiplied by 17/17, and the other fraction by 112/112. This gives you 51/9520 plus 112/9520

Really you should have written the equation with each fraction in the traditional way with the numerator separating the denominator with a horizontal line not the oblique. Or put brackets around each fraction. I read it as 3/560+1/85

Isn't this easier a) Find a common factor, 5 is obvious. B) express 560 as 5 . 112 and 85 a 5 . 17 C) you have reached a prime number in 17, stop. D) multiply 3/560 by 17 and 1/85 by 112. Same numbers but get there way quicker.

You're asking if this will be easy. What form do you want the answer? You wanted in a decimal or do you want it in a fraction? If you want it in a fraction? Your answer could come in a decimal that's an irrational answer. So name your poison. If it's an irrational number it might be like pi. You may have to settle for decimals of precision. Of course the Precision is relative to the distance is we're talking about. Do you want the calculations to bring you back from the planet Mars or not?
