Btw, I am also REALLY impressed with the fuel burn on those engines. I thought for sure when you said 13gph you meant per side. Shocked you were getting sub 7gph per engine. Amazing.

It really is a huge selling point for this plane relative to other twins. And it really matters these days with Jet-A getting north of $9 at some locations 😕

From someone who loves Diamonds, and is training out of Rainier Flight Service (almost at checkride), love these videos. Always fun to see your home airport and to see the good comms with ATC. Keep em coming!

I really enjoyed this. I usually don't watch all of these 30+ min type videos, but for some reason, I really enjoyed this and watched it all! I think partially because I am based not too far from KGOO (at KDVO) and look forward to flying myself to the Seattle area sometime.

Zachary, many thanks for the nice comments. Yes I know videos this long are a bit niche but I enjoy making them and sharing more details of the type of flying I do. I am working on one that will hopefully be shorter and has some really beautiful (IMHO) external-plane shots of the North Cascades

Thanks Sesvid. It does take some experimenting to get the audio right. I try to make it as close as possible to what I experience when I am flying.

Helllo from Reno, Great vid and amazing plane. I'm building instrument time up here and need to make some cross countries into grass valley this summer. Love flying around our area.

Thanks! Grass Valley is a fun airport. It warrants a little more preparation if you haven't been in there before but it is not any more challenging than other mountain airports.

@@twmba65 It was a great cinematic effect! BTW I think, as I have, you've been following Richard Tyrer's round-the-world flight. According to a video he posted on Instagram he couldn't risk the 12.5 hour flight from northern Japan to Alaska (he didn't say where but I'm assuming Dutch Harbor) due to unfavorable winds. I looked at those airports on the Aleutian chain such as Adak and Dutch Harbor and was amazed by the high MDA's for instrument approaches - even the ILS (due to terrain). So I appreciate Richard's dilemma. However, I was looking at Flightaware and noticed something interesting. One plane going into Dutch Harbor (ceiling below the MDA at the time) descended below the ceiling over the water several miles north of the airport and then apparently made a contact approach to a landing. I didn't think ATC would be able to clear a flight down to 1,000 feet over the water as I would expect the minimum vectoring altitude to be higher. Or I wonder if the plane cancelled IFR? Are you familiar with these types of operations? Richard told me that he had been in contact with Wolfgang Reichenberger, who also flew a DA42 round the world and who also has a KZbin channel. Wolfgang actually flew the last leg across the Pacific from Hawaii to California. I thought Richard might try the same as he apparently has the range with the ferry tanks. In any event, Hawaii-California is about the same distance as northern Japan to Dutch Harbor, AK. I suspect Richard really wanted to fly to Alaska via Russia but the Ukrainian situation nixed that.
@twmba65
@twmba65 2 жыл бұрын
@@igclapp Yes I've been following Richard's world flight as well. It sounds like you have more insight into his recent decisions but everything you are saying makes sense. I understand he is saying that forecast winds are making the Japan to Alaska flight impossible for now. I have watched Wolfgang's Hawaii to California video a couple of times. It is an incredible feat but its not for everyone. Definitely no Plan B at certain points along that route. Japan to Alaska also would be flying through some potentially less friendly air space and ocean if something went wrong. Regardless I'm glad that Richard has modelled good decision making and is prepared to make the no-go decision if needed. I'm not familiar with the flight operations you mentioned around Dutch Harbor ... based on what you are describing, I would guess they just cancelled IFR (assuming weather allowed it) and proceeded in VFR (But that is just slightly-educated speculation!).

Hi Trevor what is the definition of cross country?
@twmba65
@twmba65 Жыл бұрын
Hi Jerry - The FAA defines a cross country as any flight from one airport to a different airport that involves some navigation. For the purpose of logging hours for your private pilot etc., the destination airport needs to be at least 50 nautical miles from the departure airport.

@twmba65

Hi, I record the atc audio either on the GoPro or more recently on a separate audio recorder. I use a dedicated cable that connects in line with my headset and has a separate cable to the audio recorder. If you search on YT, there are several videos describing how to do this.
